Sabah tourism industry in created over 380,000 jobs
He said the industry accounted for about 15 per cent of the state's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and contributing RM13.1 billion to the state's economy.
"We have witnessed firsthand how tourism uplifts communities and we take pride in our progress in community-based tourism here in Sabah," he said at the launching of the Asean Travel Exchange (ATEX 2025) at a hotel here.
Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Christina Liew delivered his speech.
He said Sabah is home to many community-based tourism operators, and these initiatives were spearheaded by individuals and families from local villages, particularly rural communities, who create experiences that were distinctly Sabahan.
"As we speak, community-based tourism continues to expand in Sabah due to its immense potential to grow the economy, especially in the rural areas of Sabah.
"In 2024, the total state revenue contribution from this sector amounted to RM7 million from 18 active districts.
"More community-based initiatives in the rural districts are being introduced to benefit the rural communities," he said.
Hajiji added that the state government is investing in infrastructure with ongoing upgrades to the Kota Kinabalu International Airport, improved road conditions giving access to rural tourism areas and enhanced digital platforms designed to promote and manage visitor experiences effectively.
"We are laying the foundation for a resilient and future-ready tourism economy.
"Sabah's strategy includes embracing green economy principles, advocating for digital transformation, and enhancing our profile as a premier venue and host for international tourism events," he said.
Meanwhile, he said that ATEX 2025 serves as a reminder of just how powerful the combination of tourism, travel, hospitality, and aviation can be.

Brickbats – some funny, others derogatory – were seemingly hurled at him from all corners in these two related NST Online Facebook posts aptly headlined 'Anwar: I Travel Abroad to Represent Malaysia, Not for Leisure'. Speaking about his recent 24-hour journey from Brazil at the launch of the Madani Rakyat Terengganu 2025 Programme in Kuala Terengganu yesterday (July 13), PMX claimed that he often faces gruelling schedules but remains committed to his duties. 'You think I enjoy flying abroad? I represent Malaysia whenever I travel — it's not for leisure,' he replied to the amusement of learned and very much informed Malaysians who have seemingly lost faith in him. Instead of silencing his critics, little did PMX realise that 'silence is golden' would be the best policy for someone who is now living in a glass house. One stinging comment would be that his only son (from six children) Mohammad Ihsan Anwar being spotted during his recent three-nation tour, particularly during his official trip to Rome. 'In couple of his trips, there were claims that his son tag along,' one witty commenter hit out. 'Can he (PMX) explain on what capacity? If it's personal, can he show the supporting payments, it. air ticket, hotels, meals, etc? The commenter who is also a law practitioner further quantified that working 24×7 'doesn't make PMX a great guy or someone that we should appreciate'. Elaborating on the participation of PMX's son on his overseas trips, former Barisan Nasional (BN) strategic communication deputy director Datuk Eric See-To had on July 3 exposed that third child of PMX had also been spotted in PROTON's visit to Kazakhstan and even met with the country's PM. 'Before this, his face had appeared in several official visits of PMX or programmes involving Malaysian government delegations,' the opposition-slant (pro-Datuk Seri Najib Razak) influencer who also goes by the pseudonym Lim Sian See penned on his FB page. 'So, it's time for PMX to explain publicly what exactly is his son's official position? Does he work with PMX? Or with MITI (Investment, Trade ad Industry Ministry)? Or where? 'If PMX can twice announced the appointment of his daughter, Nurul Izzah, as an advisor to the PM and then advisor to Finance Minister (ie himself), why not be transparent about his son as well?' Affin Bank Bhd has been upgraded from 'A' to 'AA' in the Morgan Stanley Capital International environmental, social and governance ratings. Hong Leong Bank Bhd and Hong Leong Islamic Bank Bhd will revise their lending and deposit rates by 25 bps, effective July 14. BTM Resources Bhd has scrapped its 7MW renewable energy power plant project, citing difficulties in securing financing and rising project costs. Jasa Kita Bhd 's substantial shareholders Tan Sri Tan Hua Choon and Datuk Seri Tan Han Chuan, who collectively hold 181.3mn shares or 40.3% equity interest, have inked a conditional share sale agreement with Kintan Prima Sdn Bhd for their stake at RM68.9mn cash or 38 sen a share. Greatech Tech Bhd said GTech Holdings Sdn Bhd has transferred its 57.7% stake in the automated machinery group to GTech's two shareholders. Meta Bright Group Bhd has sold its wholly-owned Australian subsidiary, Meta Bright Australia Pty Ltd, for RM25.4mn as part of a strategic shift towards strengthening domestic operations. Hextar Real Estate Investment Trust said it has entered into a deal to buy two parcels of leasehold land in Melaka, totalling 41.8 acres, for RM40mn. Malaysian Resources Corp Bhd, through its wholly owned subsidiary Country Annexe Sdn Bhd, has entered into a joint venture development agreement with Ipoh Sentral Sdn Bhd to undertake the proposed Ipoh Sentral project in Ipoh, Perak. Econpile Holdings Bhd 's wholly owned subsidiary, Econpile (M) Sdn Bhd, has secured a RM98.2mn construction contract from Eastmont Sdn Bhd for a proposed industrial development in Klang, Selangor. SkyGate Solutions Bhd said it is raising its stake in SkyGate Integration Sdn Bhd (formerly Leader Range Technology Sdn Bhd) to 95% by acquiring another 44% stake for RM9.8mn via a share issuance deal.
