DoorDasher drives onto tarmac at Chicago's O'Hare Airport, exposing security flaw
In surveillance video obtained by Nexstar's WGN, the delivery driver's red Hyundai Elantra is seen pulling up just behind and to the right of a United Airlines wide body jet parked at Terminal 1, Concourse C around midday on May 17. The vehicle stopped for approximately 20 seconds before pulling forward again and then stopping alongside the jet.
Baggage handlers noticed the driver and approached, however it took nearly 10 minutes for a marked Chicago police vehicle to arrive. It's unclear from the video whether police or airport security officers may have approached the scene sooner on foot.
WGN Investigates has learned the driver entered the restricted area through a security gate at the southeast corner of O'Hare, indicating he traveled a significant distance across the massive airfield without being stopped or raising alarm.
'No guard was clearly visible and [he] proceeded through the gate, following instructions from his GPS coordinates in an aim to deliver the meal,' the driver told police, according to records obtained by WGN Investigates. Police found the food order and a Door Dash receipt in the driver's car and released him without issuing any citations.
The private security guard manning the perimeter checkpoint told police she didn't immediately report the breach.
'The vehicle had indeed driven through her post to which she regarded as strange and unfamiliar,' she told officers according to their reports. 'She then closed the gate but made no attempt to contact [the operations center] or notify her direct supervisor.'
'Following this incident, [Chicago Department of Aviation] leadership met with the contractor, Lincoln Security, to review what occurred and referred the matter to the Transportation Security Administration for further investigation,' airport spokesperson Kevin Bargnes told WGN Investigates. 'The employee involved is no longer employed by Lincoln Security, and their airport credentials have been terminated by the CDA.'
A DoorDash spokesperson did not answer a question about whether the driver is still delivering food for the company.

(WGN) — The Illinois landlord convicted of killing a 6-year-old Muslim boy and injuring his mother in a brutal hate crime attack in October 2023 has died in custody just months after he was sentenced to more than 50 years in prison. 73-year-old Joseph Czuba died Thursday while in the custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections, officials from the Will County Sheriff's Office confirmed Saturday. Earlier this year, Czuba was found guilty of killing 6-year-old Wadee Alfayoumi and wounding his mother, Hanan Shaheen, after he attacked them over their Islamic faith. Czuba's death comes less than three months after a judge handed him a 53-year sentence for the deadly attack. Back in February, Czuba was convicted on murder and hate crimes charges. In court, prosecutors said the attack was a response to the war between Israel and Hamas, which had escalated greatly following the October 7 attack on Israel by Hamas. Czuba had been renting rooms to the pair in his home at the time of the attack. Evidence at trial included harrowing testimony from Shaheen and her frantic 911 call, along with bloody crime scene photos and police video. Jurors deliberated for less than 90 minutes before handing in a verdict. Authorities have not provided details on Czuba's cause of death.

No arrests made after DoorDash driver shot in front of teen in Boston
Police are investigating after a DoorDash driver was shot while making a delivery Friday night in Boston's Brighton neighborhood. Police said the frightening incident happened on Faneuil Street at around 11:40 p.m. Fourteen-year-old Jenny said she was standing right next to the DoorDash driver when he was shot. She said she had ordered some food from Outback Steakhouse and she and her seven-year-old sister came outside to pick up her order. "It was super scary. He was bending over to take a picture of the food, and that's when we heard, I guess, two loud gunshots like fireworks, and he just fell to the ground, and he was holding his stomach. And he was rolling on the ground," said Jenny. "My first instinct was to just grab her [my sister]." Police said the DoorDash driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Jenny's mother, Castillo, said she's thankful her two girls are OK. "We couldn't sleep, my girls now they don't feel safe here," said Castillo. "They just came out of the door and who would expect anything to happen?" On Saturday, police were seen patrolling the area. The shooting took place right across the street from a playground. The close-knit family said they're thankful no one else got hurt. "Sad and we need to be more alert," said Castillo. "I hope the police are trying to find the people who are making our community not safe. We live in front of a park, and we want to feel safe, and we want our kids to feel safe." Jenny said she's thankful to be alive. "I'm super grateful. I was literally thanking God in every possible way that I am OK and my sister is OK," said Jenny. "I just want to get out that gun violence needs to stop because a lot of people not only lose their family members, their friends, people close to them. And not only does it hurt the person getting shot, it can also hurt the people around them a lot." Police are still investigating the shooting. So far, no arrests have been made.

Plainfield landlord convicted of killing 6-year-old Palestinian American boy reportedly dies in custody
The Plainfield man convicted of killing a Palestinian American boy in an October 2023 hate crime has died in the state prison system just weeks after his sentencing, WGN reported Saturday. Joseph Czuba, 73, died Thursday while in Illinois Department of Corrections custody, the Will County Sheriff's Office confirmed to WGN. A jury found Czuba guilty of killing 6-year-old Wadee Alfayoumi in a fatal stabbing and wounding the boy's mother, Hanaan Shaheen. He was sentenced in May to 53 years in prison. The Will County Sheriff's Office, Illinois Department of Corrections and his attorney, George Lenard, did not immediately confirm Czuba's reported death to the Tribune. Authorities charged the attacks as hate crimes. Czuba, who was renting part of his house to Alfayoumi and Shaheen, stabbed them after he became 'heavily interested' in the Israel-Gaza war after the Hamas attacks of Oct. 7, 2023, prosecutors said. Shaheen testified during trial that Czuba grew angry with her because she was Muslim and from Jerusalem, telling her, 'Muslims are not welcome here.' Czuba stabbed Alfayoumi 26 times, and Shaheen also sustained dozens of wounds as he tried to kill her. He was sentenced to 53 years in prison. Lenard said to his understanding, Czuba was held at Menard Correctional Center in downstate Illinois. Plainfield community members unveiled a monument dedicated to Alfayoumi in June.
