BJD criticises BJP for non-execution of Coastal Highway project

Bhubaneswar, May 27 (PTI) Opposition BJD on Tuesday criticised the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre and alleged that non-execution of the ambitious Coastal Highway project is a 'betrayal' by the 'double engine sarkar'.
Stating that the foundation stone of the coastal highway project under the Sagarmala project was laid way back in 2015 by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, the BJD leader said the annulment of tender of the proposed coastal highway was nothing but a 'betrayal' by the double-engine BJP governments at the Centre and in Odisha.
Das Burma claimed that the detailed project report (DPR) for the coastal highway in Odisha had been changed thrice and repeated cancellation of tender makes the future of the project 'uncertain'.
The BJD leader also raised questions on the move to make the coastal highway road two-lane instead of the original plan to construct four-lane road.
The tender annulment notice issued by the manager (tech) of NHAI-Odisha circle attributed the cancellation to administrative reasons.
'From the beginning, it was said that the highway to be built under this project would be four-lane and tenders were also called accordingly. However, after the re-evaluation of the project, it has been reported that it will be made two-lane, which is completely unacceptable,' the BJD leader said.
The 346 km coastal highway was planned as an alternative and parallel carriageway to the existing NH-16. The project was prepared to connect from Gopalpur in Odisha's Ganjam district to Digha in West Bengal.

Three, including two nuns, held for human trafficking in Chhattisgarh
RAIPUR: Three persons, including two Catholic nuns who had reportedly come from Agra, were arrested by the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Durg on Friday for alleged human trafficking amid suspicion of coerced religious conversion. They were remanded to 14-day judicial custody, a police officer said. The trio were booked under BNS Section 143 (trafficking of persons). All three were caught accompanying three young women aged between 18 and 20 years, hailing from Narayanpur district in south Bastar, after Bajrang Dal activists spotted them at Durg railway station. The group was allegedly preparing to travel to Agra for training and subsequent employment opportunities. Bajrang Dal members staged demonstrations at the Durg GRP police station demanding strict action against those allegedly involved in human trafficking and forced religious conversion. 'The nuns had come to Durg merely a day before without any valid reason. They were about to board a train along with the rescued girls to Agra when we spotted them,' said Ravi Nigam, a Bajrang Dal leader. Members of the Christian community also gathered at the GRP Durg station and were seen defending the nuns. The two nuns — Preeti Marry and Vandana Francis — who had come from Agra, along with Sukhman Mandavi from Narayanpur, were produced before a local court in Durg and remanded to 14-day judicial custody. The rescued girls have been sent to the Sakhi One Stop Centre in Durg. Meanwhile, Congress MP K C Venugopal has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai seeking stringent action against the perpetrators. He also urged the government to uphold constitutional rights and religious freedom in the state. The Congress leader alleged that BJP-ruled states are witnessing a rampant rise in attacks on minorities. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the targeting of a migrant's family in Delhi on the day her party launched a 'language movement' to protest against the targeting of migrants from the State in BJP-ruled States. Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam official suspended for misbehaving with consumer
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Lucknow, Jul 27 (PTI) A superintendent engineer (SE) of Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam has been suspended for allegedly misbehaving with a consumer, officials said on Sunday. Sharing the suspension order of SE Prashant Singh on X, Uttar Pradesh Energy and Urban Development Minister A K Sharma said, 'Upbhogta Devo Bhav (consumer is god)!" 'The SE of Basti, Prashant Singh, has been suspended with immediate effect for his insensitivity and indecent behaviour towards the complaint of electricity consumers. 'All other electricity officers and employees have been directed for effective and quick solution of consumer problems. Everyone should be ready for public service," Sharma said. The suspension order was issued on Saturday by Chief Engineer (administration) Arvind Nayak on behalf of the managing director of Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam (PVVN). It said that Bharat Pandey, a resident of Mudaghat in Basti district, lodged a complaint with Singh over phone on July 18 about non-supply of electricity. The suspension order said Singh behaved 'indecently" with the complainant despite being in a responsible position, which fell under the category of 'misconduct". Singh will remain attached to the office of the MD, PVVN, Varanasi, during his suspension period, the order said. Accountability will be fixed from the top management of the power corporation to the field-level officials, he said. Arbitrary behaviour of any staff member hindering development will be strongly dealt with, the minister said in the statement. 'Despite substantial investments in power infrastructure – over Rs 26,000 crore in the last three years – the image of the government and the department is being damaged by the carelessness of a few employees. 'In view of the state's development needs and the rights of the consumers, such irresponsibility will no longer be accepted," Sharma said.
