EU Ready to Impose €21 Bln in Tariffs on US Goods

Israa Farhan
The European Union is prepared to impose tariffs on American imports worth €21 billion ($24.5 billion) if ongoing trade talks with the United States collapse, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani revealed in a newspaper interview published on Monday.
Speaking to 'Il Messaggero', Tajani
confirmed
that Brussels has already compiled a list of US products targeted for potential retaliatory tariffs.
The move comes in response to US President Donald Trump's latest threat to impose a 30 percent tariff on goods imported from both the EU and Mexico, starting 1 August, following the failure of recent trade negotiations.
Tajani warned that if no agreement is reached, the EU will have no choice but to respond decisively, adding that a second wave of tariffs could be introduced if a deal proves impossible. Despite the tensions, he expressed hope that diplomatic negotiations could still lead to a resolution.
In the same interview, Tajani urged the European Central Bank (ECB) to consider launching a new round of quantitative easing and interest rate cuts to support the eurozone economy amid the global uncertainty fueled by potential US tariffs.
He highlighted that escalating trade barriers would have global repercussions. Tajani cautioned that a decline in global stock markets could pose a direct threat to American pension funds and household savings.
The Italian minister emphasized that the ultimate objective should be a zero-tariff trading environment across the transatlantic and North American regions. He called for greater market openness between the EU, Canada, the United States, and Mexico, positioning this as a vital step toward long-term economic stability.
As global trade tensions mount, the EU's contingency measures signal a readiness to defend its economic interests, while leaving the door open for constructive dialogue.

Gold Prices Fluctuate Despite Rising Safe-Haven Demand

Waleed Farouk Gold prices, both locally and globally, experienced volatility during trading on Monday, despite the global ounce price climbing to a three-week high, supported by increased demand for gold as a safe-haven asset amid escalating trade tensions between the United States, the European Union, and Mexico. In the local market, gold prices gave up their early gains. The 21-karat gold lost the morning's upward momentum, settling at EGP 4,660 per gram, the same as last week's closing price. Globally, the ounce erased its initial gains, stabilizing at $3,355. Gold prices in the local market were as follows: 24-karat: EGP 5,326, 18-karat: EGP 3,994, 14-karat: EGP 3,107, Gold pound (8 grams of 21k): EGP 37,280 Last week, gold prices rose by EGP 20, starting at EGP 4,640 and closing at EGP 4,660. Globally, the ounce gained $18, moving from $3,337 to $3,355. The recent movements in gold prices have been driven by renewed trade fears, following Washington's announcement of plans to impose 30% tariffs on imports from the EU and Mexico starting in early August, after the failure of recent negotiations to reach a comprehensive agreement. These declarations triggered concern in global markets, prompting investors to hedge through gold, amid warnings of potential negative impacts on international trade flows. Brussels and Mexico described the proposed tariffs as 'unfair and destabilizing.' Meanwhile, the European Commission announced an extension of its suspension of retaliatory measures until early August, in hopes of reaching a diplomatic resolution. In another development, investors are awaiting the release of U.S. inflation data for June, scheduled for Tuesday. These figures are expected to offer insights into the Federal Reserve's interest rate direction over the coming months. Market expectations currently point toward a potential 50 basis-point rate cut before the end of the year. Such a move would likely enhance gold's appeal as a hedge asset that, while non-yielding, tends to outperform in low-interest environments. Data from the SPDR Gold Trust—the world's largest gold-backed exchange-traded fund—showed that its holdings declined by 0.12% on Friday, dropping to 947.64 metric tons from 948.80 metric tons the previous day. Additionally, the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) reported a decline in speculative positions on gold, with net long contracts falling by 1,855 in the week ending July 8, bringing the total to 134,842 net long positions. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Arts & Culture Hawass Foundation Launches 1st Course to Teach Ancient Egyptian Language Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream

Egypt urges EU support for Gaza ceasefire, reconstruction at Brussels talks

Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty on Monday urged the European Union to support efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza and participate in a post-war reconstruction conference, during talks with top EU officials in Brussels on regional crises and their strategic partnership. During meetings on the sidelines of a ministerial summit, Abdelatty discussed the situation with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, and the EU Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Šuica. The foreign minister briefed the officials on Egypt's efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip and to resolve outstanding issues in the negotiations. He stressed the need for an end to Israeli attacks, the siege on civilians, and the use of starvation as a weapon, and called for the unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid into the enclave, according to a statement from his ministry. Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's rejection of the displacement of Palestinians from their land and said that once a ceasefire is announced, Egypt intends to host an international conference for the early recovery and reconstruction of Gaza, expressing hope for broad European participation. The minister also praised the strategic partnership between Egypt and the EU and thanked the bloc for the recent approval of the second tranche of a €4 billion macro-financial assistance package for Egypt. The talks also covered the EU's planned 'Pact for the Mediterranean,' which it aims to launch by the end of the year to enhance political dialogue with southern Mediterranean countries. Abdelatty stressed the importance of the pact providing new sources of financing, mobilising more European investment, promoting free trade, and providing legal migration pathways. The meetings addressed a range of other regional issues. On Libya, Abdelatty emphasized the importance of respecting its sovereignty and implementing U.N. resolutions for the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries. Regarding Syria, he stressed the need to support its unity and stability. Abdelatty also reiterated Egypt's support for the security and unity of Sudan, stressing the need to preserve its national institutions and end the humanitarian suffering of its people. He also affirmed Egypt's solidarity with Somalia and its support for the Somali government's efforts to restore security and strengthen state institutions.
