Specialized ankle surgery at RAK Hospital helps young man regain mobility after years of pain

Khaleej Times11 hours ago
After spending nearly three years in pain and gradually withdrawing from sports and daily activities, 28-year-old Samuel Tyler can finally walk—and run—without fear. A persistent ankle problem following an old football injury had been limiting his mobility, causing repeated falls and keeping him from the active lifestyle he once enjoyed.
His turning point came when he visited RAK Hospital, where a consultation with Dr. Bharath Patil, Specialist Orthopedic Surgeon, revealed a condition many don't even know exists: chronic lateral ankle instability.
'Many people assume ankle injuries will heal on their own or aren't aware that unresolved ligament damage can lead to long-term instability,' said Dr. Bharath Patil, who led the surgery. 'This was the first time we performed an advanced lateral ankle ligament reconstruction of this kind in the Northern Emirates, and it's important to raise awareness that such treatment options are now available closer to home — and they can truly change lives. In Mr. Tyler's case, the condition had robbed him of confidence and mobility for nearly three years. He had completely stopped playing sports and lived with a constant fear of his ankle giving way, especially while walking on uneven ground.'
After a thorough clinical evaluation and MRI scan, Dr. Patil and his team performed a Broström repair — an advanced, minimally invasive ankle ligament reconstruction. The procedure, which took about an hour, involved the use of suture anchors, high-strength fiber tapes, and knotless PEEK screws to restore joint stability.
Tyler, who had been relying on braces and bandages for months, opted for surgery after continued discomfort and instability. Following a short recovery period and structured physiotherapy, he is now back on his feet — pain-free and active once again.
What makes this case notable is not just the result — but the awareness it brings to a commonly overlooked issue. According to Dr. Patil, many young adults, especially athletes and those with active lifestyles, suffer from recurring ankle sprains and assume it's just part of the game.
'We see patients who've lived with pain for years. They're told to rest, stretch, or wear a brace, but the core problem—damaged ligaments—remains unaddressed,' he explained. 'Once those ligaments are reconstructed, their quality of life improves dramatically.'
Dr. Raza Siddiqui, Executive Director of RAK Hospital said, 'We're truly proud to offer top-quality care and innovative treatments right here in our community. This surgery marks milestone as the first of its kind in the Northern Emirates, showing how we're bringing advanced orthopedic care closer to home. It's a big step forward, and a real win for our patients.'
The condition, though not widely known, is treatable. It often follows sports injuries—especially in football, rugby, or hiking—where ankle twists and sprains are frequent. If left untreated, it leads to ongoing instability, a higher risk of falls, and long-term joint wear.
RAK Hospital's orthopaedics department is now offering this surgical option to similar patients, and Dr. Patil encourages anyone with chronic ankle pain, especially those who experience repeated twists or a 'giving way' sensation, to seek evaluation.
'Surgery is never the first step,' he emphasized. 'But when conservative treatments don't resolve the issue after several months, it's worth looking at what else can be done.'
Tyler, now back to his routine and pain-free, hopes others won't wait as long as he did. 'I just wish I had known earlier that there was a fix,' he said. 'I am extremely happy to have undergone this surgery, which has given me back my active lifestyle. Dr. Bharath took the time to explain all the pros and cons in detail, making me feel comfortable and confident throughout the process. He has been brilliant every step of the way, providing excellent aftercare and support. I highly recommend him and am very thankful to RAK Hospital for their outstanding service and care.'

Warrior Academy takes new approach to martial arts training in Dubai

Warrior Academy, a specialised training centre for martial arts, recently opened its first branch in Dubai. Rooted in the Warrior Method, a revolutionary approach to child development created its founder and martial arts expert Sebastian Bates, the programme focuses not only on physical skills but also on fostering mental and emotional resilience. Excerpts from an interview: What inspired the launch of Warrior Academy in the UAE? We saw a gap in the UAE for real character education. Not just teaching kids how to fight, but helping them build confidence, focus, and integrity. The UAE gave us the perfect space to scale our impact. It's a region that values leadership and growth, and we're here to develop that in the next generation. How does the Warrior Method differ from traditional martial arts training? Our method comes from my best-selling book The Warrior Method, which details our four-step system: Community, Inspire, Challenge, Lead. It's a structure that builds the three Cs in children—Confidence, Conduct, and Concentration. We use martial arts as a vehicle to give kids a black belt in character. What age groups benefit most from your Confidence Accelerator Programme? We train children from the age of 2 and up, and we've seen remarkable transformation at every stage. But between the ages of 7 and 13 is where growth becomes exponential. That's when identity locks in. We don't exclude younger or older students—we've simply built a programme that supports every age with the right challenge. How do you measure personal growth in children? We're the only martial arts academy in the world using software and AI to deeply track a child's development. We measure changes in Confidence, Conduct, and Concentration—and we show parents a clear before and after. On average, kids in our programme see an 82% boost in confidence in their first year. This data has earned us national media attention in four countries. No fluff. Just real, measurable growth. What role does character development play in your curriculum? It's everything. Skill without character is dangerous. Most academies teach techniques. We teach purpose. We don't just train fighters—we shape leaders. Too many places chase belts and trophies. We focus on lifelong values. It's a completely different philosophy, and it's why our students stand out on and off the mats. Can you share a success story from one of your students? We had one boy come in after experiencing some serious bullying— he was shut down and full of fear. Within a year, he stood on stage and gave a confident speech in front of hundreds of parents. Another student with autism struggled with communication. Martial arts gave him structure, a sense of belonging, and now he's mentoring younger students. That's transformation. How is the academy contributing to global social impact? For every paying member, we sponsor two vulnerable children in slums across the world. Right now, we teach over 6,000 children weekly across seven countries in five continents. By the end of this year, that number will hit 15,000. In the heart of the world's biggest slums, every child we support receives a hot meal—often the only one they'll eat that day—before they train. It's a full-circle programme that changes lives, not just habits. What's next for Warrior Academy in the region? Due to high demand, we're opening three new academies: Jumeirah Islands (Sept 2025), Khalifa City in Abu Dhabi (Jan 2026), and Silicon Oasis (Sept 2026). These dates are tentative, but interest is exploding—we already have paid waiting lists. After our Jumeirah launch, over 1,000 parents have applied to join. The demand is real, and we're building to meet it.

'Patient Experience is built when people don't just follow steps, they believe in the purpose behind them. At Saudi German Health UAE, we've been aligning care, culture, and operations around one shared truth: experience is not an initiative, it's how we lead, how we work, and how we serve.' – Ahmed Eissa, Group CEO, Saudi German Health UAE Every touchpoint, team interaction, and daily routine is being re-examined through the lens of experience: how care is felt, not just how it is delivered. This will include reimagining onboarding, empowering peer-to-peer recognition, enhancing patient journey design, and creating signature moments that leave lasting emotional impact. 'What Saudi German Health UAE has chosen isn't easy. But it's real.
