'I think what gave us the extra bit of weird was the Buddhist factor,' Thurman says.

It all worked out, of course. After an occasionally awkward girlhood that included an itinerant education in the Pioneer Valley — she attended the Campus School at Smith College, Wildwood Elementary School in Amherst, Amherst Regional Junior High School, and Northfield Mount Hermon, the boarding school in Gill — Thurman moved to New York and quickly established herself as a talented actress of considerable range.
Now, at 55, she has appeared in dozens of films, playing everything from ingénue (1988's 'Dangerous Liaisons') to comic book villain (1997's 'Batman & Robin') to mob wife with a black bob (1994's 'Pulp Fiction') to swashbuckling assassin in a tracksuit (2003's 'Kill Bill: Volume 1'). Along the way, she's been nominated for an Academy Award ('Pulp Fiction');

Thurman says her upbringing proved to be important in a few ways. She discovered her love of movies while sneaking into

And it was at Northfield Mount Hermon, playing Abigail in a production of Arthur Miller's 'The Crucible,' that Thurman was first noticed. An agent from New York saw the show and spoke afterward to its tall, 10th-grade leading lady. 'He said, 'If you come to New York, I'll help you get real acting lessons and send you on auditions,'' Thurman recalls.
Initially, though, the roles being offered to an attractive blonde-haired, blue-eyed actress were the opposite of interesting.
'I understood I was going to have very limited options if I didn't really learn how to be a character actress, so I pursued that with ferocity,' Thurman says. 'If you have a humanity inside of you that sees how objectified and looked down upon women are, you don't want to be something that you just don't relate to.'

While she has played plenty of strong, self-possessed female characters in her career, Thurman has not made many action movies — aside from director Quentin Tarantino's two 'Kill Bill' films, in which she wields a lethal sword as The Bride. But in 'Old Guard 2' — a sequel to 2020's '
''Kill Bill' turned out to be this iconic, trailblazing, singular, cinematic moment, and I've noticed in all cases, when you do something really well, you kind of get asked to burn yourself out in that genre,' she says. 'But you look at someone like Charlize and the way she creates her own work. I wish I had had more of that kind of energy...You can see that it can be done and it's people like that who are trailblazers.'
Asked if she's been satisfied with the roles she is offered now that she's older, Thurman sighs.
'I heard Jodie Foster say this: 'When you're in your 20s, they say it's going to be over when you're in your 30s. And when you're in your 30s, they say it's going to be over when you're in your 40s.' And so on,' Thurman says. 'You're given multiple death sentences as an actress, as a woman, because of the industry and its focus on youth.

These 7 Netflix Treats Are Worth Watching In July

The start of summer means that most people are out and busy, soaking up the sun, enjoying BBQs and planning last-minute beach getaways. If you're like us, however, you're most likely still locked into all your favourite movies and shows, eagerly scrolling the internet for more news of upcoming cinema releases and streaming drops. Over the last month, Hunger Games fans rejoiced as they announced that Glenn Close would be starring in the latest installment as the cruel custodian of District 12, Drusilla, alongside Billy Porter as drug-addled stylist, Magno. For musical theatre heads, the release of the Wicked: For Good trailer had everybody buzzing with anticipation for the closing chapter of the box-office smash hit. Plus, The Materialists press tour gave us enough content to keep us smiling for weeks to come. Still, as we head into July, we've got our eye on a new slate of content heading our way, with Netflix rolling out plenty of must-see dramas, documentaries and more. To discover all our favourite upcoming shows and movies coming to the platform this month, read on ahead… Our Netflix Star: Too Much Moustache finger tattoos, infinity scarves and Lena Dunham's Girls are often noted as defining moments of the 2010s. Now, Dunham is making her much-anticipated return to television, this time with a a rough around the edges romance about starting over. Taking inspiration from Dunham's own life, the story follows Jessica (Megan Stalter), a 30-something who moves from New York to London following a devastating break up. With all the best intentions to lead a quaint English life, her plans are interrupted when she meets Felix (Will Sharpe), a messy but charming man in a pub toilet. Packed with a talented transatlantic cast including Andrew Scott, Kit Harrington, Richard E Grant, Andrew Rannells, Jessica Alba and Emily Ratajkowski, this is a story about balancing baggage with new beginnings. Trainwreck: The Cult of American Apparel For those paying attention to fashion in the 2010s, American Apparel was known for giving wearers serious social currency. Becoming one of the most successful US fashion brands, the disco-pant producers were a Tumblr style blogger staple, with sexually promiscuous ad campaigns making them globally famous. But as the new Netflix documentary details, the brand that so many young people wanted to work at was actually crumbling on the inside. Exposing the actions of CEO and founder Dov Charney, the doc discusses the sexual harassment claims, financial mismanagement and toxic work practices that brought about the end of American Apparel. The Old Guard 2 If there's one thing Charlize Theron knows how to do, it's kick ass. Returning for a second instalment, The Old Guard 2 follows Andy (Theron) and the gang on their continuing mission to save the world. As immortals, the group have spent thousands of years trying to do good, but this time they must go up against the first of their kind, Discord (played by a sword-wielding Uma Thurman). Enlisting the help of Tuah (Henry Golding) to try and understand the mystery around their immortality, the warriors must face their biggest challenge yet. The Sandman (Season 2) Split into two parts, The Sandman returns for its final season with 11 new episodes. Based on the award-winning comic book series, the second instalment promises to bring the story to a fulfilling close, following Dream as he embarks on a mission to save the realm, himself and the conscious world from his past actions. Jack Gleeson (Game of Thrones), Indya Moore (Pose) and Freddie Fox (The Great) join the fantasy epic alongside the original cast, including Gwendoline Christie, Stephen Fry and Joely Richardson. Trainwreck: The Real Project X For those old enough to remember the Project X movie, it was a pop culture moment like no other. Based loosely on the plot of a real-life teenager who threw an out-of-control house party, the term 'Project X' subsequently entered the cultural lexicon for Tumblr teens. Now, for the first time, the real Dutch teenager who created an open Facebook event in 2012 speaks about how things went so wrong so quickly when tens of thousands of people signed up to attend. Ending in a full-blown riot and an estimated £15,000 in damages, the doc details exactly how one teenage girl from a tiny town threw the most viral party of the 2010s. Untamed Thinking about heading into the great outdoors this summer? Well, this new Eric Bana-fronted series might have you feeling differently. Set in Yosemite National Park, this mystery thriller follows a National Parks Service agent as he attempts to enforce the law across the sprawling forests and mountainscapes. From the writer behind The Revenant and American Primeval this is a series that examines what happens when humans and the wilderness go up against each other. Happy Gilmore 2 In 1996, Adam Sandler gifted Happy Gilmore to the world, a beloved comedy about a down-on-his-luck hockey player who turns to golf in the hopes of saving his family from bankruptcy. Now, 29 years later, Happy returns to the course, this time a father having to find money to fund his daughter's dance school tuition. With a star-studded cast including Ben Stiller, Julie Bowen, Margaret Qualley, Bad Bunny, Eminem, Post Malone, Rory McIlroy and even Sandler's real-life daughter, Sunny, this promises to be a sports sequel with some substance.

'Jurassic World Rebirth,' 'The Old Guard 2' — Movie new releases to see or skip this weekend in Canada — streaming and in theatres

It's you're an action movie lover, there's a lot for you to see this weekend with the release of Prime Video's Heads of State with John Cena, Idris Elba and Priyanka Chopra, and the theatrical release of Jurassic World Rebirth with Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali and Rupert Friend. Additionally, The Old Guard 2 was released on Netflix this week, with Charlize Theron and Uma Thurman. But while there's so much newness in the action genre, much of it didn't land as well as you may have hoped. That being said, on the other side of the genre spectrum, Eva Victor's feature debut Sorry, Baby is a clear hit of the Baby is certainly my pick of the week if you're going to see a newly released movie. Eva Victor's film is an impressive debut feature that's incredibly thoughtful, endearing and funny, and Victor's voice feels unique. While it may be tempting to call this a film about trauma, it's really about healing after violence, something that's often left out in films with similar subject matter. Victor also injects so much humour into the story in a way that only works when the filmmaker has impressive attention to detail with fully developed and nuanced characters. This is already one of my favourite movies of the year so far. The biggest issue with Jurassic World Rebirth is that it's exactly what you expect, but that means it lacks excitement. Ultimately, it's just boring. But much of it comes down to a continuation of a franchise that's quite tired, and needs a big swing to really reinvigorate these stories. That's not what you're getting with Jurassic World Rebirth. It's a movie that just falls into the "meh" descriptor. If you're a particular fan of the franchise or the actors, you can have a good time with this one, but otherwise it's two hours and 13 minutes of predictability. The cast does the best they can with the story, but you can't escape the fact that the magic of this franchise has diminished over the years. There are two things that make Heads of State watchable. Firstly, the chemistry between John Cena and Idris Elba, who were also castmates on The Suicide Squad, and one sequence with Jack Quaid that is incredibly entertaining in its goofiness. Other than those elements, the film is holding on by a thin string with dialogue that will make you roll your eyes, and CGI that looks odd at times. But it's your typical mainstream action-comedy, so you know what to expect. The movie may star Elba, but don't expect this to be The Wire. Let's get the obvious out of the way, the story in The Old Guard 2 is far less enticing than what we got in the first film. And when that's your starting point, it's a tough uphill battle to try to crawl out from a stunted script. The story lacks the fun from the first movie, with no real stakes. Of course, Charlize Theron and Uma Thurman in an action movie together is going to make you want to hit play, they're both absolute powerhouses in the genre. But that being said, you'll be left wishing they had more substance to work with. Victoria Mahoney certainly tries to use the film's action sequences as effective storytelling devices in the evolution of this narrative, leaning into as much fun and poignancy as she can, but the expansion of this story just isn't on any solid ground.
