Rebel Wilson Reveals How Her Weight Loss Journey Redirected Her Career: 'I Kind of Untypecast Myself by Losing Weight'

Yahoo09-05-2025
Rebel Wilson is opening up about how her weight loss journey has impacted her professional life.
The Rebel Rising: A Memoir author, 45, recently spoke with SiriusXM radio host Ben Harlum about the pivot in her career since losing 80 pounds over five years ago.
'From that point, I started getting offered more serious roles,' she revealed, citing her upcoming role as Lady Capulet in Juliet & Romeo and her role in British indie, The Almond and the Seahorse.
'So I think I kind of untypecast myself by losing weight,' she confessed. 'I mean, I loved being the bigger, funny girl.' Adding, 'Loved playing Fat Amy in the Pitch Perfect movies. It was so cool, and that still is me in so many respects. I guess people ... once I did lose weight, they started to see me a bit differently.'
She also revealed that when she set out to become an actress, she envisioned more dramatic roles. 'I wanted to be like Dame Judi Dench and be really serious.'
'It's just, I had something that people would like to laugh at, and then Nicole Kidman gave me this scholarship to come to America and specialize in comedy, and so that's what I did,' she explained. 'Then when I came to Hollywood, I was just the full comedy girl.'
'But now it's kind of like almost going back to my roots as an actress and doing some serious stuff as well,' she said.
In March 2024, she spoke with The Sunday Times about her weight loss journey and her a "year of health" in 2020. But she revealed, 'Basically, no one apart from my mom wanted me to lose weight,' she said. 'People thought I'd lose my pigeonhole in my career, playing the fat funny character, and they wanted me to continue in that.'
She also spoke about her brief experience with Ozempic. Wilson said she took the FDA-approved type 2 diabetes drug for maintenance after losing weight.
'Someone like me could have a bottomless appetite for sweets, so I think those drugs can be good," the actress said, before noting that she no longer takes Ozempic.

That same month, the actress spoke with PEOPLE and revealed that she was an 'emotional eater' and detailed the 'emotional war' she experienced over her weight.
'I think to many people I'm a beacon of body positivity because I see people who are considered medically obese if you look at their weight, but I think they are absolutely beautiful,' she said. 'I really think beauty is at any shape and size so I do really promote that."
'So people are like, 'Well, how can you be so body-positive and then be hating yourself?' But I wasn't hating myself, I was only hating those shameful behaviors,' she added.

‘Harry Potter' star Emma Watson banned from driving for 6 months after speeding offense

Harry Potter actress Emma Watson has been banned from driving for six months after she was caught speeding in her Audi S3, according to British news outlets. The 35-year-old star, who played Hermione Granger in the film franchise, drove 38 mph in a 30 mph zone in Oxford, England, on July 31 last year, BBC reported. The offense was caught on a speed camera on a restricted road in the city. Watson was charged via mail and pleaded guilty on March 3 to the offense. On Wednesday, the actress was sentenced for the violation at a lower court in Wycombe. She did not attend the 5-minute hearing. In addition to the six-month driving ban, the actress will also have to pay £1,044 in fines (roughly $1,400 U.S. dollars), which she has to pay within 28 days. This is Watson's fourth driving offense in less than two years, according to the Daily Mail. She received three points on her license for this July 2024 speeding offense, in addition to nine points from driving offenses in January 2024 and October and November of 2023. Watson was driving her Audi S3 at the time of the speeding incident, which was towed away by police last year after it was illegally parked when she met up with her mom for lunch at a pub across the street, the Mirror reported. The actress has been studying for a doctorate at Oxford University. Coincidentally, in a separate hearing at the same court on July 16, another Harry Potter star was also handed the same sentence for speeding. Zoë Wanamaker, who played Madam Hooch in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was also banned from driving for six months and fined £1,044 for driving 46 mph in a 40 mph zone in August 2024 in Berkshire, England, according to the Mirror. Like Watson, the 76-year-old also had nine points on her license before the speeding offense. Wanamaker did not attend the sentencing.

Prince Harry and King Charles both invited to major UK event as royal reunion is teased

Prince Harry and King Charles may well be reuniting soon — as both royals received invitations to the 2027 Invictus Games. It was revealed last month that the Duke of Sussex, 40, was gearing up to extend an invitation to his estranged father to the ceremony, which is slated to take place in Birmingham in July that year. Helen Helliwell, the CEO of the 2027 event, has expressed hope that both Harry and the monarch, 76, will be in attendance, though teased it's 'too soon to confirm who's going to be there.' 'We would be delighted if the duke were able to come,' she told People. 'He really brings a magical sparkle dust to his interactions, and there is a really special relationship with him and the community.' Helliwell noted that members of the royal family have been ardent 'supporters of the Armed Forces,' and have been advocates of the Invictus Games 'since inception in 2014.' 'We'd be delighted if members of the royal family were able to attend and would very much welcome their presence in a couple of years' time,' she added. The 'Spare' author is believed to have approved the royal guest list and the wording of the invitations already. However, the royals will have a tricky decision to make. The Games will open on July 12, 2027 and conclude on July 17 — which coincides with Queen Camilla's 80th birthday. Celebration planning for Her Majesty's big day is already underway, so it's unclear whether the royals will opt to decline Harry's invitation. It's said that Harry's invitations represent the first time he has publicly reached out to his family since the royal rift began more than five years ago. The 2027 event will mark the first time since the Games have returned to the UK since the very beginning. Helliwell confirmed that the event, which will host 550 athletes from 20 nations, has already secured more than $5.5 million in commercial backing. What's more, she revealed that new sports will be introduced, with pickleball and laser run being thrown into the mix. 'We hope that will bring a new audience,' she explained. It remains to be seen whether Harry's wife, Meghan Markle, and their children Archie and Lilibet will attend. Harry previously insisted this was not an option without 'full police protection' — for which he lost his appeal earlier this year. If the 'Suits' alum, 43, opts not to return to her husband's homeland, it will mark the first Invictus Games she has missed since meeting him in 2016.

Prince Harry flies abroad for major engagement as Meghan Markle stays in the US for ‘safety'

Prince Harry has jetted off to Angola where he'll walk across explosive landmine sites as part of his work for the Halo Trust charity. The Duke of Sussex, 40, was notably solo when he landed in Central Africa Tuesday morning — as it emerged that his wife, Meghan Markle, stayed home in Montecito, Calif., for 'safety' reasons, according to the Daily Mail. Harry — who, like his late mother Princess Diana, has previously visited active landmine sites — arrived at Luanda airport before boarding a small aircraft to the danger zones. The 'Spare' author, who became patron of the charity in 2019, is expected to walk across the same terrain as his mother did 28 years ago. The late princess famously walked through a landmine field in a flak jacket and helmet just months before her untimely death later that year. Harry is expected to give a speech on Tuesday, though the British press has been denied entry to the event, the outlet adds. 'The duke won't let his wife go to England over security concerns, so there was no chance he'd allow her to go to Angola to walk across landmines,' a source told the outlet. Safety fears aside, insiders claim that the duke prefers to keep his charity work separate from his marriage. 'Halo is really his thing, it means so much to him to be patron, and he just wants to keep his work with them to himself,' the insider added. The Post has reached out to reps for the Sussexes for comment. It's not the first Halo Trust event that the 'Suits' alum, 43, has skipped. The former actress previously missed a United Nations event in NYC last September, as well as Harry's 2019 trip to Angola with the same charity. While the exact reason for Harry's visit is unknown, sources suggest that the duke's presence has a direct effect on funding from the Angolan government. 'Usually these trips help to drive a bit more money from the government,' a source told the outlet. The duke's last venture to Angola took place in 2019, during which he wore protective gear and a visor. Harry's visit was also a poignant one, as he toured the area his mother had previously traversed. The area has since been honored with the Diana Tree that has been planted in the late princess's memory.
