Over 1,000 gather for Sabah trading card game event

KOTA KINABALU: The second edition of The TCG Event drew over 1,000 trading card game enthusiasts from across Sabah to 1Borneo over the weekend. Sabah Youth Council President Abqaree Fawwaz Abekan said the event offered a positive space for Gen Z and Gen Alpha to connect and develop social and strategic skills.
Advertisement He added that the state government remains committed to supporting youth-led initiatives and is exploring ways to build a stronger ecosystem for the trading card game (TCG) community. Organising chairperson Chang Chee Ken highlighted the event's growth, with 12 card games and six hobby shops taking part this year, up from eight and five respectively. SANDAKAN: Sabah's long-standing struggle with legacy landfill sites is entering a new chapter. Deputy Chief Minister Il Datuk Dr Joachim Gunsalam said the State Government has launched a comprehensive rehabilitation project at the Sg Sibuga landfill, employing cutting-edge IGNIS 3R technology. 'This initiative represents a significant shift towards sustainable and environmentally responsible waste management,' said Joachim, who is also State Local Government and Housing it Minister. He said the rehabilitation goes beyond simply addressing a long-standing problem. 'It's a strategic investment in Sabah's future.' He highlighted the significant health, safety and land-use impacts of these neglected sites, calling them a 'legacy burden' that has plagued the State for years. 'The choice of technology was carefully considered, rejecting less suitable options like incinerators and waste-to-energy plants due to cost, logistical and feasibility concerns,' he said. Joachim stressed the importance of a long-term solution, avoiding quick fixes that would burden future generations. The selection of IGNIS 3R, a technology championed by Sabah-born CEO Dr Davina Markus of SG Ignis (Sabah) Sdn Bhd, underscores the Government's commitment to local talent and innovation. Joachim also expressed pride in empowering Sabahans to lead a world-class initiative. The technology's ability to remediate old landfills without the need for waste sorting, open burning, or leaving behind soil contaminants, was a key factor in its selection. While acknowledging it's not a perfect system, Joachim presented it as the best available solution. The project's success hinges on collaboration, he said, and also called for full support from local authorities, technical departments and the community to position the Sg Sibuga project as a model for future waste management initiatives across Sabah. 'This strategic investment reflects the Sabah Government's commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable development, showcasing a proactive approach to addressing long-standing environmental challenges. X accuses French prosecutors of politically motivated free speech probe
PARIS: Elon Musk's social media platform X has accused French prosecutors of launching a politically motivated criminal investigation, claiming it threatens users' free speech. The company denied all allegations and stated it would not comply with the probe. Earlier this month, Paris prosecutors escalated a preliminary investigation into X over suspected algorithmic bias and fraudulent data extraction. Authorities enlisted police to examine potential wrongdoing by the company or its executives. 'Based on what we know so far, X believes that this investigation is distorting French law in order to serve a political agenda and, ultimately, restrict free speech,' the platform posted on its Global Government Affairs account. 'For these reasons, X has not acceded to the French authorities' demands, as we have a legal right to do.' In a sharp rebuke, X also alleged the probe was instigated by French lawmaker Eric Bothorel, who accused the platform of manipulating its algorithm for foreign interference purposes. X dismissed the claim as 'completely false.' The Paris prosecutors' office and Bothorel did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Musk, a former ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, has repeatedly criticized European governments for what he sees as attacks on free speech. He has also expressed support for some of the region's far-right parties. The French investigation could widen tensions between Washington and European capitals over online discourse regulations. Former Trump administration officials have previously accused platforms of censoring right-wing voices globally. X further objected to prosecutors' demands for access to its recommendation algorithm and real-time user post data, which would be analyzed by researchers David Chavalarias and Maziyar Panahi. The platform accused both of showing 'open hostility towards X,' raising concerns about the probe's impartiality. Neither researcher responded immediately to requests for comment. X also criticized the use of organized crime charges in the investigation, which could allow authorities to wiretap employees' personal devices. The case follows similar legal scrutiny in France against Pavel Durov, founder of Telegram, who faces judicial supervision over alleged organized crime on his platform. Durov denies wrongdoing. SMM dismisses viral jet photo claims, cites cleared inquiry

The company clarified that the photo, taken in August 2024, was from a follow-up visit to an Indonesian mining conglomerate after the Board-approved due diligence process initiated by its former CEO in early 2023. Advertisement SMM stated that both CEO Natasha Sim and company secretary Emily Chong had already cooperated with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission last December, with an internal inquiry in February 2025 finding no misconduct or personal benefit involved. It emphasised that the CEO holds no licensing authority, and strongly refuted any claims of wrongdoing, calling the allegations misleading and defamatory.
