The 'Ponyboi' Movie Ending, Explained
Ponyboi's morning routine begins with ritualistic shaving to confirm with societal expectations as an intersex person, and ends with the news that his estranged father is dying.
Vinny arranges a drug deal at the laundromat, which brings two ominous mob enforcers—one sporting vintage bookie-style spats – into play. Things go almost instantly south as their buyer, aptly named Lucky, overdoses during the transaction. Ponyboi grabs the mob money and bolts toward whatever counts as freedom south of the Pulaski Skyway.
On the run, Ponyboi meets Bruce, played by the endlessly watchable Murray Bartlett. He's a Mustang‑driving cowboy who appears like a queer fever dream in a ten‑gallon hat. At this point, we're being spoon fed flashbacks revealing Ponyboi's broken relationship with his father. One worth mentioning here is him placing a cowboy hat on young Ponyboi's head, grooming him to be a 'big, strong man.'
Ponyboi and Bruce talk about Bruce Springsteen, sing a duet of 'I'm on Fire,' and play in the laundromat. With the haze of daddy issues in the air, the dynamic between Bruce and Ponyboi triggers the 'is he even real?' response.
Openly intersex, Latinx, Jersey‑born, Gallo flexes every intersecting outsider muscle in Ponyboi's swagger and softness. Ponyboi tenderizes itself by slipping in and out of genres; and the performance is so alive, you stop clocking 'representation' checkboxes and just fall for this messy, resourceful kid who wants, wildly, to be loved.
After Ponyboi bolts with the cash that belonged to the Lucky, he becomes a moving target for two predators at once — Vinny, furious that his side‑hustle has collapsed, and Two‑Tone, Lucky's vengeful brother.
In addition to the physical chase, Ponyboi finds himself a digital chase, screening calls from his dying father looking for a deathbed conversation. When he finally picks up, the conversation is halting, raw, and inconclusive. Ponyboi can't bring himself to forgive the man who ordered surgeries meant to 'fix' him as an intersex person.
Ponyboi seeks refuge in a low‑lit cabaret run by his old friend Charlie (Indya Moore). Charlie's tough‑love monologue about self‑definition forces Ponyboi to admit he isn't just running from thugs — he's running from every label that's ever been stapled to his body.
Vinny returns in a super violent and hard to watch confrontation, fueled by professional desperation and personal betrayal.
After narrowly escaping Vinny, Ponyboi is met again by Bruce, and the two share fries over a dreamlike date in the neon of a diner with doo-wop in the background. Bruce offers a lift to Vegas — an invitation to leave New Jersey, the mob, and every bad memory behind. Outside the diner Bruce gives Ponyboi the keys instead of driving the car himself, which feels like a literal passing of the baton. Bruce quotes the film's thesis line: 'You can have whatever you want—you just have to think you deserve it,' and steps out of the narrative.
Ponyboi slides behind the wheel of the vintage Mustang and for the first time in the movie, he's the literal driver, not the passenger. He heads for the Jersey turnpike and the film abruptly ends, causing quite the stir with audiences. But by leaving the mob threat and family reconciliation open‑ended, Ponyboi insists that the first victory is self‑permission. Everything else can only happen once he believes he deserves to steer.
Ponyboi is now playing in theaters.

Ed Sheeran's New Single ‘Drives' Onto The Charts
Ed Sheeran's 'Drive' debuts at No. 49 on the Official Singles chart in the U.K., while 'Sapphire' ... More and 'Azizam' from Play remain top hits. LONDON, ENGLAND - DECEMBER 09: Ed Sheeran performs live on stage as he plays a surprise support set for The Darkness at The Roundhouse on December 09, 2023 in London, England. (Photo by) Ed Sheeran is promoting a lot of music at the moment. His new album Play is expected in September, and he has already shared several singles from the project. Two of them remain on the charts in the United Kingdom, and both are still big hits – but the singer-songwriter isn't done giving his fans new music to enjoy. The English talent joined the F1 soundtrack with 'Drive,' which arrived just before the album appeared in full. The film has become a hit at the box office all around the world, and the tune he contributed to the star-studded project is now a win in his home country as well – though not quite as big as his Play smashes. Ed Sheeran's New Single 'Drives' Right Onto the Charts 'Drive' arrives on a trio of tallies in the U.K. after its first full tracking frame finishes. The tune opens almost exactly in the middle of the Official Singles chart, which ranks the most consumed tracks throughout the nation. On that tally, Sheeran starts his latest tune at No. 49. A New Top 40 Smash 'Drive' is a top 40 win on the other two lists where it debuts this frame. Sheeran's latest opens at No. 26 on the Official Singles Downloads chart and No. 31 on the Official Singles Sales ranking, which provides a more general view of which individual tracks are selling well throughout the country. Ed Sheeran is Nearing Some Major Milestones Sheeran is approaching triple-digit wins on all three of these rosters, and 'Drive' helps him inch closer to that landmark. The singer-songwriter has accrued 95 career wins on the Official Singles Downloads chart, while he is up to a little more than 80 on the other two tallies where 'Drive' can be found. Ed Sheeran Joins F1 F1, a new racing film directed by Joseph Kosinski and starring Brad Pitt, includes contributions from a variety of superstar acts like Doja Cat, Tate McRae, Chris Stapleton, and Blackpink singer Rosé, as well as Sheeran. 'Drive' was chosen as the fifth official single, and it was pushed just one week before the full-length appeared. 'Drive' Follows 'Sapphire' and 'Azizam' As 'Drive' revs its engines and becomes a top 40 hit in the U.K., two of Sheeran's Play tracks are still holding on and performing exceptionally well. 'Sapphire' reaches No. 1 on a pair of tallies, while 'Azizam,' the lead single, continues to live inside the top 10 on multiple lists and only drops below that tier on a handful of other rosters, months into its tenure.

Brad Pitt Says ‘Se7en' 'Reinvigorated' His Passion for Acting After 'the Most Unhealthy Time'
David Fincher's Se7en played a part in reinvigorating Brad Pitt's passion for acting during the early years of his career. During a Monday appearance on Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert podcast, the F1: The Movie star reflected on what he described as 'the most unhealthy time' in his life during the summer of 1994. He admitted that after having 'not such great experiences coming off a couple of jobs,' he wasn't sure where his career was heading. More from The Hollywood Reporter Ed Sheeran Releases New Song "Drive" From 'F1: The Album' 'Mindhunter' May Return as Three Movies, Star Holt McCallany Reveals The Outrageous 20-Year-Old Movie That Predicted Trump's America 'I had not such great experiences coming off a couple of jobs and I just wasn't really sure what I was doing. I had the weirdest summer,' he said. 'It was the most unhealthy time, I just needed to check out and I would wake up, I would get a bong load, I'd have four Coca Colas on no ice, no food this particular summer, and I watched the O.J. trial, trying to figure out what do I do next? What do I do next?' Pitt found himself 'reinvigorated' after he was presented with the Se7en script, though he was still initially hesitant about the film's storyline before he met with the director. 'Then I read this script, my dear friend and manager and basically my sister now, Cynthia, sends this over, [and] she says, 'You got to read this.' I read the first seven pages, I call her up and I go, 'Are you kidding me?'' Pitt explained. 'Like, [it was] the cliché old cop wants out, the young cop comes in and he's looking at his high school football trophies?' She goes, 'Just finish it.' Then I go meet Finch, and he was just talking about films like I'd never heard anyone speak about film.' The Oscar winner added, 'I just got the jones back, and finding that thing, it just reinvigorated what I wanted out of this thing.' Se7en follows the story of Detective William Somerset (Morgan Freeman), who is about to retire, and David Mills (Pitt), as they track down a serial killer (Kevin Spacey) who murders people who he believes have committed one of the seven deadly sins. The film earned a sole nomination at the 68th Academy Awards for best film editing. Netflix just got a must-watch crime comedy from the Oscar-winning director of ‘Anora' — and it's 96% on Rotten Tomatoes
Sean Baker was the toast of Tinseltown earlier this year when his phenomenal comedy-drama 'Anora' scooped five Oscars, including the Academy's biggest prizes, Best Picture and Best Director. But the Mikey Madison star-making movie was far from Baker's first time creating a darkly funny flick that critics and viewers adored. 2015 saw the release of 'Tangerine,' a bitingly sharp crime comedy that sees a sex worker set out on a quest to even the score after learning that her boyfriend (who also happens to be her pimp) was unfaithful to her while she was locked-up in jail for a month. Filmed on three iPhone 5S phones — at a time when the idea of filming even an indie movie on a smartphone was considered pretty novel, let alone an S model — 'Tangerine' is a brilliant underdog story, and it's just arrived on Netflix as part of the service's July slate. If you enjoyed 'Anora,' then it makes for the perfect follow-up, and if you don't want to take my word for it, its critical reception should convince you to add it to your Netflix watchlist. Transgender sex worker Sin-Dee Rella (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) has just got out of jail after serving a 28-day sentence. Meeting up with her friend, and fellow sex worker, Alexandra (Mya Taylor), she is shocked to learn her boyfriend, Chester (James Ransone), has been cheating on her while she was incarcerated. Setting out into the hazy heat of Hollywood on a warm Christmas Eve evening, Sin-Dee vows to find Chester and get to the bottom of the situation. What follows is an odyssey through Los Angeles, exploring a side of the city that is ever present but often hidden. Much like 'Anora,' 'Tangerine" was a real critical darling. The 2015 movie holds a very impressive 96% score on review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, and this rating comes from almost 170 reviews, so it's not a small sample size. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. In fact, 'Tangerine's' RT score is higher than 'Anora's,' though the latter currently holds a strong 93% rating, so we're talking about two great movies. Writing for the Observer, legendary U.K. film critic Mark Kermode said, 'Fired by zesty performances that crackle and burn with energy, 'Tangerine' is a bittersweet affair underpinned by a winning sense of empathy and affection.' Jake Wilson of the Sydney Morning Herald described it as 'raucously entertaining.' 'The chemistry of the leads and their authentic, crackling dialogue make it a pleasure to tag along for the day,' said Rebecca Keegan of the Los Angeles Times. Meanwhile, Matt Zoller Seitz labeled the Sean Baker movie 'assured and immensely likable.' David Lewis of the San Francisco Chronicle was similarly impressed. 'This is sublime filmmaking, a textbook example of how indies can tell groundbreaking stories in a way that Hollywood simply can't match,' wrote Lewis in an extremely positive review. Plenty of critics also praised 'Tangerine' for its (at the time) innovative style due to being shot on an iPhone 5S. This gives the movie a gritty and guerrilla look, and makes you, as a viewer, feel like you're alongside Sin-Dee and Alexandra for a wild ride through L.A. If you enjoyed Sean Baker's work in 'Anora,' then you don't want to skip 'Tangerine.' It's a little rougher around the edges, at least from a stylistic point of view, but it's no less bursting with snappy dialogue and thoughtful commentary on the world around. And it's far from the only worthwhile new addition to the streaming service this month. Check out our guide to everything new on Netflix in July 2025 for even more viewing recommendations, including must-watch movies and seriously bingeable TV shows. Watch "Tangerine" on Netflix now
