Cong, UDF will back nuns' legal battle, says Satheesan
"For the past nine days, two nuns were in jail for a crime they didn't commit. Those spreading religious hatred are attacking minorities. Govt lawyers in Chhattisgarh argued against granting bail to the nuns. Bajrang Dal lawyers also argued against granting bail, treating the nuns like criminals who committed murder. BJP national and state leadership supported this," said Satheesan.
"This is the 834th attack against Christians in the last 365 days.
The significance of this incident is that it exposed BJP's true face. The nuns were arrested on false charges of religious conversion and human trafficking. In BJP-ruled states, nuns and clergy in religious attire cannot travel freely. This is the same administration that shackled and killed the venerable Stan Swamy in jail. It was a violation of the constitutional protections guaranteed to them," he alleged.
"MLAs Roji M John and Sajeev Joseph, who led the legal efforts, succeeded in securing bail.
Support will be given to all legal battles until the FIR is quashed," he added.
"Kerala's secular spirit was united in wishing for bail for the nuns. BJP is trying to bring divisive politics into such a society. Congress and UDF will fight this with all their might," said Satheesan.
Quash case against nuns, Venugopal to C'garh govt
BJP state unit leaders thought they could earn votes in elections by playing a political drama to create an impression that they intervened after Keralite nuns were arrested in Chhattisgarh, alleged AICC general secretary K C Venugopal on Saturday.
"That is just a dream. The Sangh Parivar mind is full of hatred and revenge. The nuns were portrayed wrongly as part of that and they came up with the accusation of religious conversion. BJP can't hoist the flag of love. There is no love and sincerity in them," he said.
Venugopal was speaking to the media after visiting the headquarters of Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate, the congregation to which the two arrested nuns belonged, at Cherthala in Alappuzha.
He urged Chhattisgarh govt to show the willingness to quash the case against the nuns. "Why is Chhattisgarh govt reluctant to quash the fake case against the nuns? Govt wishes to prolong the trials against them," he said. Venugopal urged Centre and Union home department to demand of Chhattisgarh chief minister to quash the case against the nuns. "Strict action should be taken against those who illegally detained them," he added.
Govt has no role in bail, says KPCC prez
KPCC president Sunny Joseph on Saturday welcomed the bail granted to the nuns. However, he said neither central govt nor state govt have any role in the grant of bail to the nuns. "It is the court's discretionary power for granting bail. Those who claim that the bail was granted due to their generosity, should also be ready to take the responsibility of their arrest," he added.
Joseph alleged that the nuns were arrested in a fabricated case. "Bajrang Dal activists threatened and manhandled the nuns and the women who were with them at the time in search of a job. Legal action should be taken against those involved in the incident," he demanded.

PM Narendra Modi to address crucial NDA meeting ahead of V-P polls and amid Parliament logjam today
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) parliamentary party meeting today. This get-together of the ruling alliance's MPs is being held after a considerable gap, news agency PTI said. The NDA meeting, which Narendra Modi will chair, will take place a couple of days before nominations for the vice president's election begin on 7 August. The NDA must announce its candidate, whose election will be a certainty due to the alliance's majority in the electoral college, by 21 August, the last date of nomination filing and the Monsoon Session of Parliament. The meeting also comes in the middle of a session which has been all but a washout so far, except for a two-day discussion on the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor, due to a united Opposition's ceaseless protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar by the Election Commission. PM Modi is expected to speak on a host of current issues as the Opposition has been raising the heat over the poll body's alleged partisan conduct favouring the government, and the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. The prime minister is also likely to be felicitated by the parliamentary party over his government's military response to the terror strike. The electoral college for the vice president poll includes MPs of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, and its current strength is 782. If the Opposition also names a candidate, a distinct possibility, then the poll is scheduled to be held on 9 September. Sources said Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and a few BJP national general secretaries are likely to be coordinating with allies for the vice presidential poll. Since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, when the BJP lost its majority but comfortably crossed the halfway mark with allies, the sessional meeting of the party's MPs was expanded to include its allies. PM Modi had addressed the first such meeting on July 2. However, no meeting has been held in the last few sessions. Before the last national elections, he addressed the weekly meetings of the BJP parliamentary party, which has now expanded to include party allies such as the TDP, JD(U), and LJP (Ram Vilas). The meeting is attended by MPs of the ruling alliance, and PM Modi often discusses a wide range of political and governance issues and, at times, touches on the government's agenda in Parliament. He often offers the MPs talking points to be raised in public, especially in their constituencies.

Regionalism dictates BJP stance on nuns' arrest
The discourse around the recent arrest of two Kerala nuns on charges of human trafficking and forced religious conversion, and the subsequent bail granted by court, has revealed the implicit political compulsions of the BJP in the two states – Chhattisgarh and Kerala. While experts cited regional political dynamics as a plausible cause of the Chhattisgarh BJP camp's defense of the nuns' arrest, the party's Kerala unit may have seen it as a chance to mend fences with influential Church leaders. Kerala BJP rushed to intervene, with the state party chief welcoming the nuns as they walked out of Durg jail. The episode sent ripples in Kerala politics, as leaders from every political party was seen rushing to Chhattisgarh last week. BJP leader alleges SDPI, Jamaat infiltration in Church protests in Kerala
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: BJP state vice-president Shone George on Monday voiced concern over what he described as the 'infiltration' of groups such as the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and Jamaat-e-Islami into protest programmes organised by Churches in Kerala. Shone told the TNIE that he had received clear evidence from trusted intelligence sources confirming the presence of these groups in the Church-led protests. Addressing a press conference, Shone alleged that elements of SDPI and Jamaat-e-Islami had participated in protests held in Kannur, Thalassery, Kozhikode, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Angamaly, Tiruvalla and Mananthavady in connection with the arrest of two Malayali nuns in Chhattisgarh recently. Noting that these groups had previously targeted Christian churches and leaders, Shone said their sudden support for the Church was 'not with good intentions'. He clarified that the BJP respected protests led by the Church, but warned that such infiltrations were 'dangerous'. He said the BJP had taken a 'humanitarian stance' on the nuns' issue. Shone accuses Left of neglecting Christians Shone asserted that the nuns' release was made possible due to the neutrality maintained by the BJP and the Chhattisgarh government. Criticising the Left, Shone accused the party of long neglecting Christians. He recalled that during the EMS government, the Left had filed an affidavit stating that Christians should not be given the same treatment as minorities. Shone also alleged that the Pinarayi government had removed the rule requiring Christians to be part of the Minority Commission and had appealed to the Supreme Court against the verdict mandating that minority scholarships be proportional to population. He contrasted the swift implementation of the Paloli Committee report for the backward sections of the Muslim community with the delay in publishing the J B Koshy report -- commissioned before the last assembly elections to address issues faced by backward sections of the Christian community -- which he said remained missing even after four years. He questioned whether the Pinarayi government dares to implement the Koshy report. Asserting that Kerala's Christians will no longer remain 'political slaves of the Congress', Shone vowed that the BJP would expose 'wolves in sheep's clothing' across the political spectrum.
