Alexandra residents left vulnerable as eviction group strikes again
Resident Sarah Maluleka said: 'More than 30 of them came. Some went upstairs, taking out things, others were searching pockets and bags, big and small alike. Others were throwing my furniture outside. There was R1 000 inside my husband's jacket pocket, and they also took that. They broke my brand-new stove, and they also stole a phone. We cannot see what else was stolen because everything is still outside.'
While the group insists it is acting against foreign nationals who should not own property in South Africa, victims say they were targeted despite presenting valid South African identity documents.

Resident Joseph Modiba, whose house was also invaded on July 4, said it is no longer about addressing illegal immigration, it is utter disrespect and pure criminality. Modiba lost items with an estimated value of R13 500, including groceries, electronics, and a laptop. 'I was not here. I got a call when I was at work, and they told me that people are taking the furniture out of the house. It was all over the street.'
He said the suspects are mostly targeting houses that have backrooms in them. He assumes this is so that, after claiming the houses, they may be able to benefit from renting out the property to other people. In their earliest attack, on June 18, Lucky Moima and his mother were evicted, and their 14 backrooms, which had tenants, were also left empty. Now, on Maluleka's block, just a few houses away from Moima's home, at least three homes were seized by the group.
Initially, the group went to some houses giving owners verbal notices to vacate their premises, but now their unlawful eviction operation has taken a violent turn. A video, shot on June 18, underscored the violence victims are exposed to. On the video the group was parading the streets, some wielding golf clubs and other weapons.
In the recent attack, Maluleka and her family found themselves fearing for their lives after some men pulled out guns and started threatening them.
As investigations into the reported cases continue, new cases emerge as the group keeps on tormenting residents in Ext 9. The resident's frustrations are also soaring. 'I am tired of these people. I am gatvol!' Modiba shared.

Mpumalangan serial child rapist gets three life sentences
A 38-year-old serial rapist was sentenced by the Volksrust Regional Court to three life terms on Wednesday, June 5. The convict was involved in the rape of three minors. According to the Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, the first incident was reported in Mkhondo in 2023, October 11. The man approached an eight-year-old girl at her home asked her to buy a box of matches at a nearby shop. He handed her R5 and told her to keep R2. The man then persuaded her to accompany him to a sports ground where he raped her. In the same area, he targeted the nine-year-old girl (9) on October 18, 2023. She was playing with her younger brother when she was approached by him. ALSO READ: Carolina man jailed for 15 years for rape He sent her to call his friend for him, then followed and raped her in an abandoned house near a church. After that, he gave her a R2 coin and instructed her not to tell anyone. He was unknown to the victim, but was later identified. The third incident took place in Volksrust on August 17, 2024. An 11-year-old victim was playing with her younger brothers at their home when the man approached her and convinced her to call his friend. He followed her, raped her and beat her before fleeing the scene. The community assisted the police in arresting the man on August 24, 2024, after being identified by the victim. Further investigation connected him to the rape cases in Mkhondo,' said Mdhluli. The convict abandoned his bail application and remained in custody from the date of his arrest until the day of sentencing. He pleaded guilty to all three counts. He was declared unfit to possess a firearm and it was ordered that his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders,' said Mdhluli.
