Saints sound the horns for new cult hero

Yahoo2 days ago
St Kilda legends Trevor Barker and Nick Riewoldt regularly left fans' mouths gaping with their aerial feats.
Supporters flocked to Moorabbin and Docklands to watch them play.
But the athletic and courageous icons never had crowds donning viking helmets in their honour or blowing vuvuzela horns every time they flew for a grab.
That privilege will instead go to the Saints' latest blonde bombshell - Alix Tauru - as his cult status grows.
Of Swedish heritage, Tauru has already been dubbed the "Flying Viking" for his aerial presence and matched a St Kilda record with 14 spoils in the defeat to Fremantle last week.

The 18-year-old defender has offered Saints supporters a glimmer of hope for a bright future as Ross Lyon's men attempt to breathe life back into their season against Hawthorn at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night.
A group of fans plan to sell viking helmets at the game and sound plastic horns in support of their new hero, while major sponsor RSEA Safety will deck out the cheer squad in viking-themed hard hats.
"It's a low bar in AFL footy, isn't it? Fourteen spoils? It used to be 14 goals," Lyon quipped when asked about third-gamer Tauru's status as a fan favourite.
"We're excited by Alix. The best thing is he's very level, he understands he's only as good as his next moment at training and in games.
"At the end of the day, you come up against another fierce and formidable opponent, and he'll know he's alive.
"The challenges keep coming, but it is exciting."
St Kilda (5-10) have hit the skids after a positive start to the season, with a horror 2-9 record over the last three months ending their finals hopes early.
They will start underdogs against Sam Mitchell's Hawthorn (10-5), who are looking to extend a three-match winning streak and continue their push for a top-two spot.
"We're a club that needs to get better. We're off the pack, but we're fighting hard," Lyon said.
"We've got a strategy over a period of time that we're pursuing, but in the near time we want to win lots of games of AFL footy.
"(We played) three quarters against Collingwood, three quarters against Fremantle, albeit spirited and some good signs.
"We're looking to chase four quarters down, so that would be the aim this week."
Hawthorn have named key pair James Sicily and James Worpel to return from injuries, offsetting the loss of Josh Weddle and Sam Butler.
Former Hawks wingman Brad Hill returns for the Saints alongside Angus Hastie, with Jack Carroll and Tobie Travaglia omitted.
Ex-Richmond teammates Dan Butler and Mabior Chol will reach significant milestones on opposing sides.
St Kilda forward Butler will play his 150th AFL match, while Hawks tall Chol will line up in his 100th, nine years after his debut.

Trbojevic takes centre stage to bag double for Manly

Tom Trbojevic has shown signs of returning to his best, firing the Sea Eagles back into the NRL's top eight with a 30-12 win over South Sydney. Two games into his shift from fullback to centre, Trbojevic scored a double at Brookvale Oval on Sunday and set up another as Manly ran to a 24-0 lead. The win made it two straight for Manly after what had loomed as a crucial fortnight for coach Anthony Seibold, and consigned the Rabbitohs to six straight losses. TURBO 🚀 — NRL (@NRL) July 6, 2025 The main concern for South Sydney will be Brandon Smith, after he limped from the field with ankle injury late in his return game from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Playing his first game in nine months and featuring for Souths for the first time, Smith started and played two short stints before being hurt in a tackle. Smith's injury came on the same leg he ruptured his ACL last August, and adds to what has been a wretched few years of injuries for the Rabbitohs. As undermanned as the Rabbitohs may be, this was still a crucial win for Manly given the noise around Sydney's northern beaches a fortnight ago. Seibold said last week that he would reconsider Trbojevic's centre move after the Souths match, wanting his most dangerous man to get his confidence back. Trbojevic appears to have at least done that, running with power again in what was easily his best match since March. He regularly played a roaming role in attack, popping up on the left of the field to give Manly an extra number on that side of the field in attack. Even at 36, DCE still has it! 👏Sportsbet #TryJuly — NRL (@NRL) July 6, 2025 The Sea Eagles' first try came in that fashion, with Trbojevic linking up with new No.1 Lehi Hopoate on the left side of the field to send Reuben Garrick over. Trbojevic scored Manly's next himself when he again went in field searching for the ball, and created pressure by chasing through on a Daly Cherry-Evans kick. On the next play he made use of the broken defensive line and stepped through two to score. It was Trbojevic's second try after the break that showed the most promise, when he again took a ball on the left, charged infield and beat three to score. Trbojevic has starred as a roaming centre at representative level, but questions linger over defensive cohesion with two Souths tries coming late down his edge. The Sea Eagles have the bye next week before a difficult month against three of the NRL's top four, and they desperately need Trbojevic firing if they are to play finals. Manly hope to have Haumole Olakau'atu back as soon as after that bye, after a middle led by Matt Lodge able to overturn Souths' better early ball on Sunday. Garrick also scored a double in the win, while fellow winger Jason Saab appeared to suffer a lower-leg injury late.

Adelaide fear for young gun after win over Melbourne

Adelaide dynamo Izak Rankine has kicked five goals in a 13-point win over Melbourne soured by a serious knee injury to Crow Josh Rachele. The Crows recovered from a 28-point deficit midway through the second term to win 13.12 (90) to 11.11 (77) at Adelaide Oval on Sunday. But Rachele suffered a potential season-ending injury, with Adelaide fearful the goalsneak damaged the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Rachele will have scans after hyper-extending the knee when landing awkwardly in a marking contest against Jake Bowey late the second quarter. Josh Rachele has come from the ground following this contest.#AFLCrowsDees — AFL (@AFL) July 6, 2025 The blow to the Crow came as his club banked an 11th win of the season and returned to third spot on the ladder. But Adelaide were forced to dig deep against the plucky 14th-placed Demons (five wins, 11 losses). The hosts led by three points at quarter-time after Melbourne blew a series of goal chances, kicking 1.6 to the Crows' 2.3 in the term. But the Demons then produced a sizzling 10-minute burst in the second quarter which was rewarded with five consecutive goals. The last in the scoring stretch, from Kysiah Pickett after soaring high for a pack mark, gave the visitors a 28-point advantage 12 minutes into the quarter. Adelaide responded with three successive goals - two more from Rankine and Taylor Walker's second for the game. The strikes reduced Adelaide's deficit to five points at halftime when the visitors led 6.7 to 5.8. Melbourne's advantage disappeared just 40 seconds into the third quarter when Ben Keays dribbled a goal to put the Crows in front. They were never headed. Keays' goal was followed by another pair from the brilliant Rankine as the Crows logged five goals to two for a 15-point lead at the last break. Melbourne twice sneaked within nine points in the final quarter but couldn't edge closer. Rankine was superb and key forwards Walker and Darcy Fogarty scored two goals apiece. Adelaide captain Jordan Dawson (25 disposals) and workhorse Keays (23 touches, two goals) were standouts, alongside midfielders James Peatling (25 possessions) and Jake Soligo (21). Melbourne ace Pickett's two goals came from 24 possessions, Jake Melksham was ever-threatening with four majors and Jacob van Rooyen kicked two. The Demons were also well served by winger Ed Langdon (25 disposals) and Steven May (12 marks), while former skipper Jack Viney gathered a match-high 30 disposals and laid nine tackles.

Record-setting Fever topple Giants to secure top spot

West Coast Fever have set a new record winning streak and secured their maiden Super Netball minor premiership with a 73-56 triumph over the Giants. Unbeaten since round two, the Fever became the first team in competition history to claim 11 consecutive victories at RAC Arena on Sunday. They have lost just twice all season and will head into the finals as hot premiership favourites with home-court advantage. The achievement follows consecutive one-goal preliminary final heartbreaks for the Fever since their breakthrough title three years ago. That's one way to start a game 🔥Watch every game live on Kayo Sports, Foxtel and Binge. — Suncorp Super Netball (@SuperNetball) July 6, 2025 But goal defence Sunday Aryang noted the job wasn't finished yet, with a premiership there for the taking. "I think we'll probably sit in it until after this game," Aryang told Fox Sports when asked about the Fever's first minor premiership. "Then we'll probably go back to focusing on the next game and just staying locked in for that as well." West Coast, who led 37-33 after a tight first half, put a match-winning gap on the Giants with a dominant 20-11 third term and won every quarter. Fever goal shooter Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard was in fine form, nailing 63 of 66 attempts. Aryang had three intercepts, four deflections and four defensive rebounds in her best performance of the season. "The previous game was a bit of a grind, shutting down the goal attack, whereas this game I could have a look a bit more and just go flying for the ball, which was nice," Aryang said. West Coast host the finals-bound Melbourne Vixens in the last round of the regular season next Sunday, while the Giants face the Melbourne Mavericks in a dead rubber.
