iPhone 17 Air tipped to get 120Hz display but without ProMotion technology

India Today04-06-2025
Apple's iPhone 17 series is generating a lot of buzz, particularly around the possible upgrade in display technology. For years, Apple has reserved its high-refresh-rate ProMotion displays for its "Pro" models, leaving standard iPhones with the more conventional 60Hz screens. However, rumours suggest that this year the base model and the rumoured iPhone 17 Air — will finally get 120Hz displays. But there's a catch: these displays may not include Apple's ProMotion technology.advertisementA recent leak hints that this highly anticipated 120Hz upgrade might come with a key distinction for the non-Pro models. According to a recent Weibo post by Chinese leaker Fixed Focus Digital, the iPhone 17 and the rumoured iPhone 17 Air are indeed expected to feature 120Hz displays, but they may not offer the full ProMotion experience. This new leak somewhat contradicts earlier claims that anticipated a full ProMotion rollout across the entire iPhone 17 family. Additionally, there are no solid reports mentioning whether Apple plans to bring 120Hz to the budget-oriented 'iPhone 17e' model, which is expected to arrive in early 2026 and may retain a 60Hz panel.
Nevertheless, consistent leaks from various sources strongly suggest that Apple is indeed moving away from the 60Hz standard for its base models.advertisementBut what is the difference between a regular 120Hz display and 120Hz with ProMotion? Apple's ProMotion technology, currently exclusive to the Pro models, does not just offer a peak refresh rate of 120Hz. It is an adaptive system that can dynamically scale down the refresh rate to as low as 1Hz when viewing static content, like an image or text. This dynamic scaling improves power efficiency and enables features such as the Always-On Display, found on iPhone Pro models.Without ProMotion, the 120Hz displays on the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air will likely operate with a fixed or limited refresh range. That means the refresh rate could switch between a few set options — like 60Hz, 90Hz, and 120Hz — rather than the seamless, granular adjustments of the LTPO panels used on Pro models. So, while users could get smoother scrolling and animations, the displays may lack the advanced power-saving and dynamic frame rate adjustments that ProMotion brings to the table.iPhone 17 series expected launch date The iPhone 17 lineup is expected to debut this September, possibly around the second week, with official sales going live a few days after launch. This year, Apple is expected to launch four iPhones — as it has done for the past few years. However, the fourth iPhone could be a new addition, consisting of the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The iPhone 17 Air is expected to replace the Plus variant and offer a slimmer iPhone with Pro-level features.Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 is rumoured to run on Apple's A18 chip — or possibly the new A19 — while the Air model could feature a more powerful A19 chip. The Pro variants are tipped to run the A19 Pro chipset.

Nvidia has beaten Microsoft as the world's most-valuable company, but its CEO Jensen Huang's wealth still lags behind this former Microsoft CEO

Chipset major Nvidia has officially dethroned Microsoft to become the world's most valuable company. This surge is fueled by Wall Street's optimism surrounding artificial intelligence (AI). The high-end AI chipmaker pushed its market capitalisation beyond Apple's previous record closing value of $3.915 trillion, set on December 26, 2024. Presently, Microsoft is on the second position with a market capitalisation of $3.7 trillion, followed by Apple on the third place with $3.19 trillion market value. This momental gain has given a boost to the personal wealth on Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. Yet despite this historic milestone, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang still trails behind former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer in personal wealth. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang's wealth still lags behind this former Microsoft CEO As reported by Bloomberg's Billionaires Index, Hunag's net worth surged by $25 billion in 2025, reaching $139 billion. With this increase Huang reached on the 10th position of world's richest people. On the other hand, former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer still sits on the 5th position with $172 billion, having gained $25.5 billion this year alone. Analysts, including Wedbush Securities' Dan Ives, are bullish on the future, predicting that both Nvidia and Microsoft could be the first companies to achieve a $4 trillion valuation as early as this summer. This optimism is largely underpinned by Nvidia's foundational role in the global AI boom, with its graphics processing units (GPUs) being indispensable for training large AI models. Nvidia beats Microsoft to become the world's most-valuable company Nvidia became the world's most-valuable company with a market capitalisation of $3.92 trillion. The company dethroned Microsoft to take this position. Now Microsoft is the second most-valuable company followed by Apple. According to news agency Reuters, the company's newest chips have been instrumental in training the largest AI models, driving an insatiable demand for its products. Nvidia, whose core technology was initially developed for video games, has seen its stock market value skyrocket nearly eight-fold over the past four years, growing from $500 billion in 2021 to nearly $4 trillion.

Apple Watch Series 10 Sees Massive Price Drop on Vijay Sales – Now from Rs 39,990

If you've been eyeing the latest Apple Watch, now might be the perfect time to make your move. The Apple Watch Series 10 is currently being offered at a significantly reduced price on Vijay Sales, with combined discounts reaching up to Rs 12,410 — one of the biggest deals so far on the new smartwatch. The 46mm Aluminium GPS model, originally priced at Rs 49,900, is now available for Rs 39,990. That's a flat price cut of Rs 9,910, applicable to both the Rose Gold model with Light Blush Sport Band and the variant that comes with the Plus Sport Loop. Additionally, those using ICICI, SBI, or Kotak bank cards can avail an extra Rs 2,500 discount, bringing the effective cost down to Rs 37,490 — a compelling deal for a premium smartwatch. The 42mm Aluminium GPS version has also received a price drop. Initially launched at Rs 46,900, it's now selling at Rs 44,600, without any bank offers applied. This version, available in Jet Black Aluminium Case with Black Sport Band, becomes even more affordable with the applicable bank discount, dropping the price further to Rs 42,100. For those who prefer cellular variants, the 42mm GPS + Cellular version is now priced at Rs 54,100, down from its launch price of Rs 56,900. That's a straight Rs 2,800 off, and it can be lowered further with eligible bank card offers. The larger 46mm GPS + Cellular model is also discounted. Previously retailing at Rs 59,900, it's now available for Rs 57,000, marking a Rs 2,900 reduction on the Jet Black Aluminium Case with Ink Sport Loop. However, the Titanium variants of the Apple Watch Series 10 — which come with GPS and cellular support — remain priced above Rs 80,000, with no ongoing offers at the moment. Despite that, the Aluminium models offer a great balance between features and affordability, making them a smart buy for those seeking a high-performance smartwatch without crossing the Rs 50,000 threshold. In terms of specifications, the Apple Watch Series 10 is available in 42mm and 46mm case sizes. It features an Always-On Retina OLED display that offers up to 2000 nits brightness, ensuring excellent visibility even in bright daylight. Under the hood, it runs on Apple's powerful S10 SiP with a 64-bit dual-core processor and operates on WatchOS 11. Health and fitness tracking remains robust with Series 10, offering features like ECG, Blood Oxygen monitoring, cycle tracking with ovulation estimates, and various sports modes. Apple claims up to 18 hours of battery life on regular use and up to 36 hours in low-power mode. For users in India considering a feature-rich and stylish smartwatch, the ongoing deals on the Apple Watch Series 10, especially on Vijay Sales, make it a worthy option to explore.

‘Building electronics capabilities in a sustained way': Ashwini Vaishnaw downplays China dependence; says India to hit 38% value add in 5 years

Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw (Image credits: ANI) India is steadily building its electronics manufacturing capabilities and is on course to achieve a value addition of 38%, comparable to China's, within the next five years, Union minister for electronics and IT, railways and information & broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Thursday. During an ET roundtable, Vaishnaw said the country is developing its electronics ecosystem in a 'very methodical and sustained way.' Currently, India has surpassed the 20% value addition mark within six to seven years, and aims to cross 30% in the next two to three years. He was responding to questions on recent reports that Apple supplier Foxconn has recalled over 300 Chinese engineers from its iPhone production facilities in India. 'De-risking' supply chains & a $145 billion electronics sector According to a Bloomberg report quoted by ET, the move, allegedly driven by Chinese government directives to restrict talent outflow, may impact assembly line efficiency and delay the training of local Indian workers. Vaishnaw, however, said India is focused on 'de-risking' by developing local skills and supply chains. 'Which is what we are doing,' he said. The minister downplayed India's dependence on Chinese personnel, noting that countries like Taiwan, the US and South Korea are contributing to the growth of India's manufacturing ecosystem alongside Indian engineers. India's electronics sector is currently valued at around $145 billion and is growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20%. The government is backing this expansion through key initiatives such as the Rs 76,000 crore India semiconductor mission and the Rs 23,000 crore components incentive programme launched earlier this year. Vaishnaw also pointed to major developments in the sector, including Tata Electronics' upcoming chip assembly plant in Assam, which will cater to global telecom manufacturers, and the Micron facility in Gujarat, which will supply memory chips. Additionally, a power electronics manufacturing unit by CG in Gujarat is also in the pipeline. Highlighting the importance of self-reliance in electronics, Vaishnaw said India must build capabilities in 'every machine, every component' to withstand geopolitical uncertainties. 'We must go into every part of it and start manufacturing them,' he said Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays . AI Masterclass for Students.
