Michigan football in top 4 for 5-star OT Kelvin Obot—can they land the 2026 star?
Michigan football recruiting, as it is most years around this time of year, has been relatively slow and mundane in terms of generating commitments. The Wolverines have just five commitments thus far in the 2026 class, but the team almost always picks things up in June and July following the official visit slate.
Regardless, that doesn't mean that all is quiet behind the scenes.
Coming off a slew of spring visitors, the maize and blue have momentum for most of their top targets that they've had all along. Now that top-tier prospects are whittling down their lists, Michigan football is making significant headway with some of the players it covets the most.
Michigan makes the top four for a top target
One such prospect that the Wolverines have long coveted is 2026 Fruitland (Idaho) five-star offensive tackle Kelvin Obot. Hailing from the same state as former Michigan star tight end Colston Loveland, the Wolverines have proven that they can find elite talent on the fringes of the Pacific Northwest.
On Thursday, Obot revealed his top four schools, and Michigan football made the cut.
Rounding out his list, however, are Oregon, Utah, and Nebraska -- three schools that are regionally closer with some having solid momentum on the recruiting trail.
Oregon has recruited very well, especially along the offensive line as of late. Considered to be the favorite for some time, the other two schools have made significant headway. Obot's last release was a top five, which included the aforementioned four programs, but he eliminated USC from contention. He also recently officially visited Michigan State, which has likewise been eliminated.
Obot unofficially visited Ann Arbor for three days in late March and is expected to visit Michigan officially.
How he ranks
On3's proprietary rankings are highest on Obot, having him listed as a five-star and the No. 9 overall player, regardless of position. He is universally seen as a four-star, but ESPN has him the lowest -- yet still within its top 300 rankings.
Here is how he ranks:
247Sports: No. 144 overall, No. 10 offensive tackle, No. 1 in Idaho
No. 144 overall, No. 10 offensive tackle, No. 1 in Idaho On3: No. 9 overall, No. 3 OT, No. 1 in Idaho
No. 9 overall, No. 3 OT, No. 1 in Idaho ESPN: No. 280 overall, No. 31 OT, No. 1 in Idaho
No. 280 overall, No. 31 OT, No. 1 in Idaho Rivals : No. 204 overall, No. 22 OT
: No. 204 overall, No. 22 OT 247Sports Composite: No. 131 overall, No. 9 OT, No. 1 in Idaho
No. 131 overall, No. 9 OT, No. 1 in Idaho On3 Industry Ranking: No. 79 overall, No. 7 OT, No. 1 in Idaho
Current commits
At the moment, as previously mentioned, Michigan football has five pledges in the 2026 class, led by four-star quarterback Brady Smigiel, the former Florida State commit. Cornerback Brody Jennings and interior offensive lineman Bear McWhorter are also listed as four-stars according to the 247Sports Composite, while wide receiver Jaylen Pile and edge rusher Tariq Boney are both listed as three-stars.

Though the maize and blue currently have five commits, expect that number to triple (or more) by the time mid-July rols around.

Lyles, Richardson scratch from 100m at US trials

Reigning world champions Noah Lyles and Sha'Carri Richardson have withdrawn from the final rounds of the 100m at the US Track and Field Championships in Oregon on Friday following their appearances in the opening heats. Both Lyles and Richardson have already qualified for September's World Championships in Tokyo after winning gold in the men's and women's 100m respectively at Budapest in 2023. Lyles, the Olympic 100m champion, has scratched from the semi-finals of the 100m at Hayward Field later Friday and will concentrate on the 200m starting on Sunday. Richardson was due to enter the 200m but has instead opted to shut down her entire campaign in Eugene after clocking 11.07sec in her 100m heat on Thursday. Women's Olympic 200m champion Gabby Thomas has also opted to scratch from Friday's 100m finals. Like Lyles, Thomas will now shift her focus to the 200m on Sunday. Lyles clocked 10.05sec in the first round on Thursday, the fifth fastest time of 100m qualifying. "I need races -- everybody knows I started the season late due to injury," said Lyles, who was beaten in his first 100m of the season at the London Diamond League on July 19. "I just need as many races as possible. After the 100 in London, me and my coach were like 'We might as well (race at trials)'. It's a free race, it's good competition." Richardson meanwhile was satisfied with her 100m performance, admitting she was reveling in the fact she could compete in Eugene knowing that qualification for the World Championships was already assured. "USA is one of the hardest teams to make, so it definitely is a kind of a release of pressure knowing I have a bye," she told AFP. "It feels really good to not have that pressure and still be able to go to Tokyo. "Right now I'm cruising under the radar, but when it's time to hit -- it's gonna be a bang where y'all see my name," she said. rcw/bb

Notre Dame quarterback Kenny Minchey makes a bold proclamation following Friday's practice

Kenny Minchey after today's practice: "I'm capable. I believe I'm the best quarterback in the country."Minchey showed off the wheels a bit today with Gino Guidugli as the read defender. You love to see when your quarterback has extreme confidence, and Notre Dame's Kenny Minchey did exactly that on Friday following the second fall practice. When speaking with the media, the second-year player proclaimed that he believes that he's 'the best quarterback in the country,' as On3's Jack Soble posted on social media. It's a strong claim, but one that ultimately could come true. Minchey will have to beat out CJ Carr first, but having that kind of confidence will go a long way. Everything that we have seen from his during his limited playing time and in practices seem to suggest that he's got the skill set to lead the Notre Dame offense. He's got the running ability to make defenses account for his legs, and the throwing ability to pop the top off of a defense. It will be a very interesting battle between the two, as the competition continues this fall leading up to the season opener on the road against Miami. Head coach Marcus Freeman will have a very difficult decision to make, but Minchey is very confident in his abilities. Watch Notre Dame RB Jeremiyah Love's insanely quick feet during a fall practice rep

Notre Dame football star running back Jeremiyah Love is already one of the best at his position nationally, and should be in line for a huge season. As aspect that might be understated in his game, is how great his feet are for the position, but we got a glimpse of that during the second fall camp practice on Friday. In a clip shared by On3's Jack Soble, you can see Love going through a drill showing off his crazy foot speed. Love glides through the drill almost seamlessly, as he makes it look extremely easy. The star junior is coming off a campaign where he accounted for 1,125 rushing yards with 17 touchdowns while catching 28 receptions for 237 yards and 2 more scores. There were multiple games that he had less than 10 carries, which makes you think what he could have done with more opportunities with the ball in his hands. If Love is able to stay healthy, reaching the 1,500-yard mark should be relatively easy, which should lead to more than a few postseason accolades. Most likely he'll be off to the NFL after this season, so enjoy watching one of the best Notre Dame running backs in recent memory this fall.
