Delhi CM Rekha Gupta, Mayor review solid waste management, aim to reclaim landfills by 2026
The meeting, attended by Deputy Mayor Jai Bhagwan Yadav, Leader of the House Pravesh Wahi, Standing Committee Chairperson Satya Sharma, Deputy Chairman Sundar Singh, MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar, Additional Commissioner Jitender Yadav, the MCD Chief Engineer, and other senior officials, centered on 13 key agenda items.
'The Corporation has ramped up biomining from 25,000 TPD to 30,000 TPD as of July 2025, with the target of complete landfill reclamation before the 2026 deadline,' said Singh.
The meeting also addressed progress on waste-to-energy (WTE) infrastructure. Singh noted that environmental clearance had been granted for a 3,000-ton-per-day WTE plant in Narela-Bawana. The clearance, issued on June 20 and made public by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee, outlines a 30-megawatt facility to be developed through a public-private partnership with Jindal Urban Waste Management (Bawana) Limited. The plant will be located in Sector 5 of the Bawana Industrial Area in Northwest Delhi.
Local residents have continued to raise environmental and health concerns about the project.
In addition, Singh said that bids have been invited for a new WTE plant at Ghazipur, with in-principle approval for Viability Gap Funding (VGF) from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
Chief Minister Gupta emphasized the importance of using reclaimed landfill land for public benefit. 'One-third of the reclaimed area should be used for public welfare projects such as sports complexes, hospitals, and schools,' she said. The remaining area, officials said, would be reserved for the construction of future-ready waste processing infrastructure.
Among the new developments, Singh also announced that a 100 TPD Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant at Ghoga Dairy is set to be inaugurated on August 15, 2025. 'This is a major milestone in wet waste processing,' he said.
The meeting also underscored the need to establish additional biogas plants across the capital to address dairy waste management more comprehensively.

New Delhi: Delhi govt is gearing up to launch 100 Atal Canteens across the city, which will offer meals at about Rs 5 per plate. The initiative aims to provide affordable and nutritious food at 100 locations, mostly near major construction sites and slum clusters, targeting daily wage workers and the urban poor. Senior officials said that govt is planning to complete some projects by the birth date of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in Dec, in whose memory the canteens are named. In her 2025–26 Budget, chief minister Rekha Gupta, who also handles the finance portfolio, allocated Rs 100 crore to set up the canteens across the national capital. Minister Kapil Mishra said, "By the end of the year, we will be in a position to launch some canteens. We have started identifying places, and soon a report will be prepared and given to me on the areas where it can operate." "This is a significant step toward ensuring food security for Delhi's most vulnerable populations," Mishra said, adding, "We are committed to fulfilling our manifesto promises, and under CM Rekha Gupta, we have been starting one scheme after another, and we have started the process for this too. This is one of our promises." A similar model was rolled out in Haryana in BJP's tenure four years ago, where the Atal Kisan Mazdoor Canteens were opened in agricultural mandis. These provide a simple meal of chapatis, rice, dal and vegetables for just Rs 10. While Delhi's version will operate at half the price, the exact rate is yet to be finalised. The official rollout plan is expected to be announced around the birthday of PM Modi in Sept. Earlier, during 2017-2022, the MCDs launched a similar project, Atal Aahar Yojna, but could not continue it for long. The scheme was among BJP's most touted programmes in its manifesto before the 2017 MCD polls. Under the scheme, the plan envisaged by the civic body was to offer breakfast and lunch at a subsidised rate of Rs 10 and Rs 15, respectively, at nearly 40 places in Delhi. Officials said that this time, Delhi govt is working on different models to ensure that the scheme does not face hiccups. "We are exploring if we can allow vendors to cut losses they would face on account of providing subsidised food by selling confectionery or other items," an official said. Govt would also have to support the scheme, he added. Former MP Gautam Gambhir too launched a similar initiative during his tenure, where he offered food for Rs 1 at some places in his constituency. However, that scheme, too, became non-functional after he left active politics.

CM's secretary Amit Singhgets extension for two years
1 2 Lucknow: The deputation of Amit Singh , an IRSS officer serving as secretary to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath since Aug 2017, has been extended for another two years. His tenure will continue till March 31, 2027. This is the second extension for Singh, a 2000 batch officer of the Indian Railway Stores Services, after his five-year deputation ended in 2021. He worked with the ministry of external affairs for a year and, thereafter joined CM Yogi's secretariat, where he has been working as his secretary for the past eight years. Before being appointed as the special secretary to CM Yogi in 2017, soft-spoken Singh worked as the regional passport officer, Lucknow, for a few months. However, as soon as Yogi took over as the CM, he was appointed as the special secretary in his office. Singh has also served as chief public relation officer, North-Eastern Railways headquarters, Gorakhpur. It is in Gorakhpur that Singh came close to Yogi, who then was the Gorakhpur MP. Singh's initial deputation was for five he has got two extensions of two years each -- in 2021 and 2023. Singh had been a regular member of delegations sent abroad by the state govt to hold talks with stakeholders to attract investment or to participate in big events like Davos Economic forum.
