With their respective teams sitting below .500, Kansas City's Seth Lugo and Pittsburgh's Mitch Keller appear to be enticing options for a postseason contender as the trade deadline looms.
In the meantime, each hurler looks to continue his own run of success when Lugo and the Royals try to hand Keller's Pirates a fifth straight defeat Tuesday night.
With Monday's 9-3 victory in the series opener, Kansas City won for just the fifth time in its last 24 home games. The Pirates, last in the NL Central, snapped a 30-inning scoreless streak with Tommy Pham's two-run, third-inning homer Monday, but they're 0-4 to start a nine-game road stretch.
However, these clubs sport two potentially desirable trade pieces for the deadline at the end of July.
Lugo (6-5, 2.65 ERA) is a remarkable 3-0 with a 1.29 ERA in his last six starts. He yielded one run on six hits and struck out seven over 6 1/3 inning of Kansas City's 3-2 win at Seattle on Thursday.
'His pitching was phenomenal,' Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. 'He really game-plans well. He doesn't overuse certain pitches, so when he does want them, they are effective.'
The veteran right-hander has made just two career starts versus Pittsburgh, the most recent coming in 2023. He is 0-2 with a 4.01 ERA in 12 games against the Pirates all-time.
Pham, batting .421 with three homers and 15 RBIs in his last 11 contests, is 7-for-15 with two doubles against Lugo.
Pham's homer Monday was one of just four hits for the Pirates, who were shut out during an entire three-game series at Seattle over the weekend. Pittsburgh has totaled 28 hits while being outscored 30-8 during its six-game road losing skid.
'As you go through, these times get frustrating,' interim Pirates manager Don Kelly said. 'We need to find a way to pick things up.'
Pittsburgh starter Andrew Heaney allowed four runs and six hits in just three innings Monday. However, the Royals, who pounded out 12 hits, including four home runs, are likely to face a stiffer test against Keller (3-10, 3.64 ERA).
The right-hander has a 2.40 ERA while going 2-2 over his last five starts. Keller gave up five hits, a walk and hit a batter, but fanned seven over seven innings of Wednesday's 5-0 victory against St. Louis.
'You got to lock it and figure out a way,' Keller said. 'It's going out there every time and giving the team a chance to win. You can only do so much out there on the mound. Just keeping us in the game is my main goal.'
Keller, however, has allowed eight runs, seven hits and six walks over 8 1/3 innings while losing both career starts versus Kansas City. The Royals' Bobby Witt Jr. homered for his only hit in two at-bats against Keller.
Witt clubbed a two-run homer Monday. He is batting .413 with three home runs and 12 RBIs in the last 11 games for Kansas City, which has won five of seven following its 5-14 rut.
Teammate Jonathan India is 8-for-18 with a home run and two doubles versus Keller.

Patrick Mahomes body shamed ahead of NFL 2025 season trainer Bobby Stroupe fires back with brutal response

Patrick Mahomes body shamed ahead of NFL 2025 season trainer Bobby Stroupe fires back with brutal response (Image Via Getty) A new controversy has popped up around NFL star Patrick Mahomes just days after he returned to training for the 2025 season. A Kansas City radio host made surprising comments about the quarterback's body after shirtless photos of Patrick Mahomes surfaced online. The comments quickly spread on social media and sparked debate. While fans mostly laughed it off, someone very close to Patrick Mahomes didn't take it lightly. The person who trains him every day stepped in to defend the star quarterback, and what he said caught everyone's attention. What bdid Patrick Mahomes's trainer Bobby Stroupe responds on X after viral body comments On Monday, July 8, 2025, Kansas City-based radio host Kevin Keitzman commented on Patrick Mahomes's body after seeing his shirtless photos online. During his segment, he said Patrick Mahomes looked 'fat' and focused on a small love handle seen in the photo. The segment from his radio show went viral immediately, with many saying the comments were ridiculous. Patrick Mahomes is an athlete 28 years old, and he's led the Kansas City Chiefs to three Super Bowl titles, so he can be considered one of the best quarterbacks in the history of the NFL. Most fans shrugged off the statement, saying that Patrick Mahomes proves himself when he plays the game not when people see him. But Patrick Mahomes's personal trainer, Bobby Stroupe, didn't stay silent. He posted on X (formerly Twitter), writing: 'Send me your location. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Nick Loftin hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh inning, then won it in the ninth with a one-out RBI single as the Kansas City Royals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 on Tuesday night. Nick Loftin hits 2-run homer in 7th, walk-off single in 9th as Royals beat Pirates 4-3 Rookie Jac Caglianone homered for the Royals, a 421-foot drive leading off the second inning that was his first extra-base hit in 14 games at Kauffman Stadium. He had been 5 for 46 at home before Tuesday. Pittsburgh's Oneil Cruz tied it in the fourth with a 458-foot shot over the fountains in right field on the day he was announced as a participant in next-week's Home Run Derby. Nick Gonzales put the Pirates ahead with a homer in the top of the seventh before Loftin's drive made it 3-2. Bryan Reynolds tied it with an RBI grounder in the eighth. Maikel Garcia singled leading off the ninth against Dennis Santana and Salvador Perez followed with a base hit. With one out, Isaac Mattson came in and gave up Loftin's game-ending hit on a 1-0 fastball. The Pirates fell to 0-5 to start their nine-game trip ahead of the All-Star Break. Kansas City has won five of six. Carlos Estevez worked a scoreless ninth for Kansas City. The Pirates' Mitch Keller and the Royals' Seth Lugo, both rumored to be trade candidates before the July 31 deadline, were nearly identical through six innings. Each allowed one run on three hits with five strikeouts. The Pirates loaded the bases with one out in the eighth against Lucas Erceg, who gave up Reynolds' tying fielder's-choice grounder and then retired Gonzales on another groundball. The Royals had their second straight multi-homer game after not having done that all season. The teams complete their three-game series Wednesday night with Pittsburgh's Bailey Falter facing Kris Bubic .
