French state makes offer to buy part of Atos' former Advanced Computing unit
Once seen as a European tech champion, with a market value of more than 10 billion euros at its highest, Atos emerged from financial troubles in 2024 thanks to a restructuring agreement with its creditors.
Atos said the French state's offer for its former Advanced Computing business was worth 410 million euros on an enterprise value basis.
It added that its Vision AI businesses did not form part of the planned deal with the French government, and that Vision AI would be repositioned within Atos' Eviden business unit.

IReit Global signs two new leases in Spain, spanning around 5,200 square metres
[SINGAPORE] IReit Global has secured two new leases in Spain last month, totalling around 5,200 square metres (sq m). The manager of the Europe-focused real estate investment trust (Reit) said on Tuesday (Jul 8) that these tenancies will raise its overall occupancy rate from about 77 per cent to 83 per cent, after letting. The first lease is for a total lettable area of approximately 1,622 sq m, by an existing tenant at Sant Cugat Green, an office building in Barcelona. The tenant, a leading data-centre operator, had occupied the underground space for data-centre operations since 2022. It proceeded to establish its corporate offices in 2023, and will expand further to develop client workspaces and technical rooms with the latest lease agreement. The new pact will bring the company's total footprint at Sant Cugat Green to exceed 7,500 sq m, making it the largest tenant in the building as well as in IReit's Spanish portfolio. IReit's manager said the second tenancy involves a prominent and rapidly growing Spanish company which signed a seven-year lease for around 3,550 sq m in Parc Cugat Green, an office building located within a business park in Barcelona. IReit's manager said this shows the 'general stabilisation and recovery of the European office market'. In Spain, particularly Madrid and Barcelona, office demand remains robust, with companies from the technology, consulting and education sectors driving activity, said IReit's manager, citing a report by Cushman & Wakefield. The manager added that it is in talks with a few other potential tenants for spaces in the other properties within its Spanish portfolio. IReit units ended unchanged at S$0.28 on Tuesday, before the announcement.

EU to seek trade 'rebalancing' with China at Beijing summit
STRASBOURG, France: The EU will seek to rebalance economic ties with China, demanding it eases market access for European firms and loosen export controls on rare earths at a summit this month, the bloc's chief said on Tuesday (Jul 8). European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said overcapacity concerns and China's support for Russia's war effort in Ukraine will also be on the table at the talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Addressing the European Parliament in Strasbourg, von der Leyen said Beijing was running the largest trade surplus "in the history of mankind" exporting vast amounts to the EU while making it harder for European companies to do business in China. "If our partnership is to move forward, we need a genuine rebalancing, fewer market distortions, less overcapacity exported from China, and fair, reciprocal access for European business," she told lawmakers. Beijing has sought to improve relations with the European Union as a counterweight to superpower rival the United States, but deep frictions remain over their economic relationship. The trade deficit between China and the EU was a yawning US$357 billion in 2024. Brussels is worried that a manufacturing glut propelled by massive state subsidies could add to it, and result in a flood of cheap Chinese goods undercutting European firms. "China cannot rely on exports to solve its domestic economic challenges. Overcapacity must be addressed at its source, it cannot simply be offloaded onto global markets," von der Leyen said. The commission leader, who will travel to Beijing with European Council President Antonio Costa, said the pair will seek to loosen export restrictions on rare earths – while Brussels also looks at "developing alternative supply resources". The curbs have caused concern among businesses worldwide as China accounts for almost two-thirds of rare earth mining production and 92 per cent of global refined output, according to the International Energy Agency. China's close relations with Russia have also been the cause of discord. "China is de facto enabling Russia's war economy, and we cannot accept this," von der Leyen said. "How China continues to interact with Putin's war will be a determining factor for EU China relations going forward." The summit is scheduled to take place later on Jul 24 to Jul 25 to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and the EU.

Ben Sulayem says F1 could have V8 engines as soon as 2029
Formula One could go back to using noisy V8 engines with fully sustainable fuel by 2029 at the earliest, according to FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem. The sport is entering a new engine era next season but the head of the governing body suggested last February that a return to the naturally-aspirated V8s or V10s was being considered after that. The V8 engines were last used in 2013, before the current 1.6-litre V6 units. "The current engine is so complicated, you have no idea, and it is costly," Ben Sulayem told reporters at the weekend's British Grand Prix. "R&D is reaching 200 million (dollars), and the engine is costing approximately 1.8 to 2.1, so if we go with a straight V8, let's see. "Many of the manufacturers produce V8s in their cars, so commercially it's correct. How much is it? You drop it. The target is more than 50 per cent in everything." Ben Sulayem said the V8 engine would also have significant weight advantages and the sound would be welcomed by both nostalgic fans and the new generation. "To us, the V8 is happening. With the teams now, I'm very optimistic, happy about it. FOM (Formula One Management) are supportive, the teams are realising it is the right way," he said. "We need to do it soon... you need three years, so hopefully by 2029 we have something there, but the fuel is also very expensive, and we have to be very careful with that. Transmissions are very expensive." Ben Sulayem also spoke about the possibility of a Chinese team filling the final 12th slot, something he has mentioned before, and said he still felt the sport needed more cars rather than more races. "The time will come when we feel it is right to open an expression of interest," he said of filling the 12th slot. "We are not here to upset other teams. It won't be just go and do it for the sake of doing it. It has to be worth it for us. The team has to add value to sustaining the business of Formula One." General Motors' Cadillac brand is due to become the 11th team next season, a slot won after initial resistance from the other teams and Liberty Media-owned Formula One.
