Northcliff High MMA prodigy strikes gold and hearts
The Northcliff High School student recently seized the spotlight by winning a gold medal in the youth A welterweight 77.1kg division at the prestigious International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) Africa Championships in Angola this past May.

But for Caleb, this victory is far more than a medal; it's a milestone on a path he has been walking steadily since childhood.
Guided by his father and coach, Wiekus Swart, Caleb's training regime is intense and disciplined, spanning five to six hours most days of the week, and blending strength, fitness, wrestling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and Muay Thai.
'We spar daily, grapple, and drill a variety of MMA techniques,' Caleb shared. Yet amidst the grind, there's a heartfelt dedication. 'This gold medal confirms that all the hard work and dedication I've put in is paying off. It motivates me to focus even more on the world championships in Abu Dhabi in July.'

MMA has been a cornerstone of Caleb's life since he was five years old. Growing up immersed in a family environment where Brazilian jiu-jitsu and MMA were part of everyday life, he embraced the sport, not just as a competitor, but as a source of confidence and life lessons. 'MMA has taught me that discipline and focus truly pay off. In the cage, there's very little luck. What you put in is what you get out.'
His love for the sport was first sparked when he watched his father referee EFC matches on TV, and later, through the exhilaration of attending events, meeting fighters, and even assisting backstage. 'I've always been incredibly physical and love activities where I can express that energy. MMA felt like the perfect fit.'
Now, with the world championships and beyond in his sights, he is forging a path of greatness, dominating on the mat.

Helikon Park fighter clinches two national titles
WestCol TVET College student Thabang Raphahlelo-Abrahams (21) has secured first place in both the MMA South African National Championships and the National Kickboxing Championships, demonstrating true fidelity after representing Gauteng. In 2021, Thabang began exploring kickboxing as a hobby before taking a short break to complete his studies. Later, he joined an MMA club, Pandamonium, after being scouted by a coach. This is where his passion for the sport truly ignited. He went on to win six fights before reaching nationals. His determination was evident when he triumphed in both the semi-finals and finals. In May, he competed at the kickboxing championships and took home the winner's trophy. During June, Thabang participated in the national MMA championships in Zambia, where he faced tough opponents. However, his resilience earned him a top spot on the podium. He returned from Zambia on July 16. 'It feels good to know that I have achieved a goal I've dreamed of for so long. I am proud to say that I have won the national championships,' he expressed. Currently, his amateur MMA record stands at nine wins and no losses, reflecting his passion for the sport. He plans to compete in the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation before aiming to participate at the national level again next year. Afterwards, he intends to advance to professional ranks and compete against other professional opponents. 'Never let go of your dreams. You have to work hard and stay consistent if you want to see results. It's tough inside the cage, and you need to have the heart to do it. However, nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it,' he said.

No complaints from Ellis in Banyana defeat to Ghana
Banyana finished the tournament in fourth place after the loss to Ghana. Coach Desiree Ellis gave an honest assessment to Banyana Banyana's surprise loss to Ghana. This after Banyana went down 4-3 on penalties to the Black Queens in a CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) third-place play-off match at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco, on Friday night. 'We started very slowly, got into the game and got a goal when we pressed. But they came out guns blazing for most of the second half, especially that first 15 minutes. We couldn't get our foot on the ball to slow the game down, and to take control. They were just better than us in the second half and eventually going to penalties, we always knew that we had a chance. Unfortunately, we didn't win the penalty shootout this time around, so congratulations to Ghana. We live on, and we'll then start preparing for what's forward,' Ellis told SAFA media. 'I think some of the games took a lot out of us, but we always knew either getting to the final or getting to the third and 4th place playoff we still had another game. We had five substitutes really because we've also picked up some injuries along the way, but that's not an excuse. We just have to pick ourselves up, these things happen in football – you've got to give credit to the opponents, in most situations they were better than us and I not going to sugar-coat that, you've got to give credit where it's due,' added Ellis. We can't look back too much, yes it wasn't a great campaign, but we got into the semifinals and came very close to getting to the final, so we'll just move on. Like every team that comes to a tournament, we had ambitions of winning it, but we didn't get there. Unfortunately, we didn't do well today,' commented Ellis.
