Apple TV Plus drops thrilling new trailer for Jason Momoa's historical drama show — and it's giving serious 'Game of Thrones' vibes
Clearly, I'm not alone on this particular hype train, either. The streaming service dropped a full trailer for Jason Momoa's new, based-on-true-events historical drama less than 24 hours ago, and it's already racked up over 2 million views on YouTube, at the time of writing.
If you've seen the new footage already, you'll know why it's doing that well: it makes "Chief of War" look like an utterly captivating watch. If not, you can see it below:
Within this 3-minute clip, we're invited to "witness the rise of the kingdom of Hawai'i," and on the strength of what's here, I am ready to heed the call.
Throughout, we see brutal battles, stunning scenery and plenty of drama. We meet our ensemble, and hear their fears, and hear plenty of talk of war and the stakes are set. Momoa even flexes his Aquaman muscles a little, hitching a ride on a shark.
The feeling I'm getting is that "Chief of War" is going to be a must-watch for fans of shows like "Game of Thrones" or "Shōgun." Having loved both shows myself, you can bet I'll be seated when this epic new tale hits the Apple streamer this summer.
If you're not up to speed on the Apple TV Plus series yet, "Chief of War" is an epic new show about the unification and colonisation of Hawai'i, told from an indigenous perspective and based on true events.

Across nine episodes, "Chief of War" follows Native Hawaiian warrior and noble, Ka'iana (Momoa). Ka'iana sets out to unify the islands before Western colonisation at the turn of the 18th century.
The cast is predominantly Polynesian; along with Momoa, "Chief of War" also features Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Cliff Curtis, Kaina Makua, Moses Goods, Siua Ikale'o, Brand Finn, James Udom, Mainei Kinimaka, Te Kohe Tuhaka, and Benjamin Hoetjes
Apple bills it as a "passion project" series for co-creators Momoa and Thomas Pa'a Sibbett, and it was written and exec-produced by Momoa, who also directs the series finale. Oh, and did I mention it features theme music written by the prolific film composer, Hans Zimmer?
The series will receive a two-episode premiere on Friday, August 1, with new episodes dropping every week, through to the series finale on September 19.

He even won that medal with a fractured arm strapped to his side from an earlier injury, with the help of his horse, Romeo. Per the Daily Mail, he also has had success outside the Olympics, at the London International Horse Show in 2021 with three wins, including winning the World Cup competition with Stardust and the Grand Prix with Borsato. Charles comes from a long line of horse people. His father, Peter, is also a former Olympic equestrian and was on Team GB when Britain won their first team jumping gold medal in 60 years at the 2012 London Summer Olympics. They reportedly began dating in 2022 and got engaged in September 2024. They likely have bonded over horses, because Eve has a passion for equestrian hobbies as well. She even competes, most recently at The Defender Stakes in the Castle Arena in May 2025. A source told the U.S. Sun that their Cotswolds ceremony would be a 'society wedding like no other.' 'The sleepy village in which it's taking place feels like it's turning into a no-go zone, with secret service operatives and blokes who look like they work for the FBI,' the insider said. 'This is a very quiet place not far from the Cotswolds. Everyone is used to tourists and famous faces, but this is something else.' In photos from the event, it does appear as though people lined up to check out the arrivals at the church. 115-song Billy Joel 'And So It Goes' playlist hits YouTube, Spotify, streaming sites
If you're watching 'Billy Joel: And So It Goes," the HBO Max documentary about the performer's career, now there's a music playlist to serve as accompaniment. It's seven hours long. Need a new playlist for weekend listening or an upcoming road trip? Billy Joel has got you covered. Just hours after the second half of documentary "Billy Joel: And So It Goes" hit HBO Max on July 25, streaming services made available a massive playlist of Joel's music from the movie. The 155-track "musical companion" the documentary can be found on Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal and other music streaming services. The playlist includes 115 songs that span his five-decade career, ranging from his early bands The Lost Souls and The Hassles to a 2024 performance of "New York State of Mind" from his 100th concert during his Madison Square Garden residency. In addition to the 115 songs, there are also audio clips from the documentary featuring Joel, his first wife, Elizabeth Weber, and others, which serve as introductions to the musical tracks. The version on YouTube also includes official music videos for several songs including "Big Shot," "Pressure" and "The River of Dreams," and live performance videos of songs such as "The Stranger" and "Just the Way You Are." Billy Joel: His 75 best songs, definitively ranked The playlist is produced by creative director Steve Cohen, engineer Bradshaw Leigh and Joel archivist John Jackson and there may be more music coming out of the vault, Cohen told the Ultimate Classic Rock website. Coming to Joel's YouTube channel on Monday, July 28 is a performance of "Piano Man" recorded in 1975 on the U.K. TV show "The Old Grey Whistle Test," Cohen told Ultimate Classic Rock. Among the unreleased live recordings and demo versions included on the playlist, Rolling Stone notes, is the first-ever live performance of 'Scenes From an Italian Restaurant,' recorded May 6, 1977 at Long Island's C.W.
