Perlis Ruler Urges Unity as Pillar of MADANI Nation
His Royal Highness said that since unity is the key to the success and well-being of the people, continuous efforts must be made by all levels of society.
'Everyone must realise their role and responsibility in contributing to the strengthening of unity and values.
'Unity is not the responsibility of a single party. It requires a collective effort from government agencies, non-governmental organisations, community leaders, educational institutions, and every individual. We all have a part to play.
'Let us make our homes, schools, workplaces, and communities' platforms to nurture the spirit of unity and love among people,' His Royal Highness said at the official opening of this year's state-level Unity Week celebration here today.
Gracing the event was Raja Perempuan of Perlis, Tuanku Tengku Fauziah Almarhum Tengku Abdul Rashid.
Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, Raja Puan Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Dr Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil and Deputy Minister of National Unity, Senator Saraswathy Kandasami were also in attendance.
Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin stated that the challenges to unity have become increasingly complex, ranging from issues of racism to extremist ideologies, emphasising that initiatives like Unity Week should serve as a platform to strengthen inter-ethnic interaction, broaden community networks, and foster understanding among communities.
'Therefore, I hope that this programme will achieve its goals by ensuring that the element of unity becomes the foundation in every action and interaction, based on mutual respect, cooperation, consensus, and tolerance,' the Ruler said.
Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin also urged the people of Perlis, regardless of their background, to continue supporting this noble effort to ensure the continuity of harmony and stability in the state and the nation.

Cabinet meeting discussed chief justice appointment, says Fahmi
PUTRAJAYA: The Cabinet meeting on Wednesday (July 2) had discussed the issue of the appointment of the new chief justice following the retirement of Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat yesterday (July 1). Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, who is also the Madani government spokesperson, said the issue was brought up during the Cabinet meeting that was led by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, although the discussion was 'not in-depth'. "We did discuss the appointment of the chief justice, but it was not an in-depth discussion. The meeting mainly focused on what Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had mentioned about the issue during the monthly assembly of the Prime Minister's Department two days ago," said Fahmi at the media briefing here after the Cabinet meeting this morning. Anwar had then stated that extension of the service of civil servants, including top judges, is not automatic and must follow the procedures in accordance with the Federal Constitution. "There are procedures when one reaches the retirement age. Their tenures are not automatically extended. In this case (extension of service of Chief Justice Tun Maimun), I was criticised," Anwar said then. He also said he does not interfere in judicial matters, including the appointment of judges or court decisions.

New border agency boss hopes to make impact within a year
KUALA LUMPUR: Newly-appointed Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) director-general Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain has vowed to make the agency more impactful and visible within a year. 'We want to ensure the agency is visible and has an impact on society within a year,' he told reporters after clocking in at the agency's headquarters yesterday. Comm Mohd Shuhaily said his contract was for two years. 'If you break it down into quarters, I have eight quarters to fulfil my responsibility at the agency. 'Today, the beginning is my 'Alif', and what I will do throughout these eight quarters is my 'Lam', and where I will go after that is my 'Mim',' he said, referring to the Quran verse 'Alif Lam Mim'. Before clocking in, Comm Mohd Shuhaily said he met Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Awang Alik Jeman. 'He gave several mandates to fulfil, including settling several administrative issues as soon as possible,' he said. Comm Mohd Shuhaily also saluted journalists who supported him all these years. 'Even though I have been transferred to a new department, they still show their loyalty. Comm Mohd Shuhaily, who is the former Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director, arrived at the agency's headquarters at about 9.15am yesterday. He later chaired a meeting with AKPS' top leadership and was briefed on issues concerning the agency. His appointment is from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2027. Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar expressed confidence that Comm Mohd Shuhaily, 53, who has 28 years of experience in the police force, would be able to lead AKPS with distinction. 'This confidence is based on Comm Mohd Shuhaily's competence and extensive experience in various units in the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), both at the national and international levels. 'His leadership is also expected to further strengthen the country's border security and uphold a culture of integrity in line with the Madani values,' he added. Comm Mohd Shuhaily graduated with a Bachelor of International Relations from the International Islamic University Malaysia and has a Master of Science in Strategic Studies from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He previously served in Washington, United States, as a police attaché from 2010 to 2013. He was appointed as Bukit Aman CID director on Aug 15, 2023.

PM Anwar prioritises rakyat-focused projects
ROME: The MADANI Government is willing to take hard and sometimes unpopular decisions to ensure development and projects that benefit the rakyat can be implemented, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar, who is here on a three-day working visit, said despite criticism over government's move to implement certain policies such as subsidy rationalisation or tariff, they needed to be carried out for the benefit of the people. 'All governments, all prime ministers in the past talk about taking away subsidies from foreigners, but none took the right action,' he said at the Majlis Ramah Mesra Bersama Diaspora Malaysia here tonight (Tuesday, July 1). The premier said various actions taken by the government, including subsidies and tax rationalisations were implemented to build more schools, universities and hospitals that will help the masses. During the dinner, Anwar also shared that various programmes and policies are being undertaken by his government to ensure the country remains competitive. 'To our diaspora in Italy, you are our ambassadors and our asset. You have a big role to play in bringing Malayia into the international platform. 'Therefore, I leave a message for you to continue to seize every opportunity and space to strengthen your knowledge, skills and networks in order to contribute back to the homeland, good governance,' he said.
