Mamata lays out new OBC list in West Bengal Assembly: ‘No question of religion-based reservations'
On Tuesday, she said in the Assembly, 'We made the new list of OBC-A and OBC-B on the basis of a scientific benchmark survey conducted by the Commission and included those communities who are backward. There is no question of making a list of OBC categories on the basis of religion.'
Last year, the West Bengal government and other petitioners moved the Supreme Court after the Calcutta High Court, on May 22, 2024, cancelled all OBC certificates issued by the state since 2010, saying 'religion indeed appears to have been the sole criterion' for granting OBC status to 77 communities.
The West Bengal government on March 18 this year informed the Supreme Court that a fresh exercise for the identification of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in the state would be conducted, following which the Supreme Court agreed to adjourn the matter by three months and take it up in July.
In the Assembly session on Tuesday, Banerjee went on, 'The Supreme Court gave us three months to make a fresh OBC list with a proper survey. Accordingly, the Commission conducted the survey and proposed a list of 140 communities. Out of that, 49 communities are in OBC-A list and 91 communities are included in OBC-B, while 50 communities are also being surveyed. We hope that survey will also be concluded within the time given by the Supreme Court.'
The West Bengal Cabinet on Monday gave approval to include 76 new castes to the Other Backward Class (OBC) list. The new castes would be added to the existing 64 ethnic groups on the OBC list, an official said. The recommendations to add more castes to the OBC list were made by the West Bengal Commission for Backward Classes (WBCBC).
After the Chief Minister laid the bill, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari wanted to speak, but Speaker Biman Banerjee adjourned the house for one hour. After this, BJP MLAs started raising slogans against the state government. Adhikari claimed that the CM was 'not ready to face questions from the Opposition.'
'All MLAs and Ministers basically fled after the OBC list was laid out in the Assembly because they knew that in this list as well, Hindu communities have been deprived. We will continue our fight for them,' Adhikari said.

Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav to leave for Dubai today for investment outreach
Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) [India], July 13 (ANI): Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav is scheduled to go on an official visit to Dubai in the UAE and Spain from July 13 to July 19. The aim of his visit is to bring global investment to Madhya Pradesh, encourage technology sharing, and create new job opportunities. "Why has Mamata not submitted Bangladeshi voters list?": BJP's Amit Malviya targets W Bengal CM over infiltration issue
New Delhi [India], July 13 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Amit Malviya on Sunday targeted West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over not submitting the 'Bangladeshi voters list' that she had claimed in Parliament 20 years ago to possess. 'West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had stated in the Lok Sabha on August 4, 2005: 'The infiltration in Bengal has become a disaster now... I have both the Bangladeshi and the Indian voters list. This is a very serious matter. I would like to know when it will be discussed in the House?'' Malviya posted on X. '20 years later, the question remains--why has Mamata still not submitted the Bangladeshi voters list? What is she hiding?' he added. Earlier this week, Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari alleged that a large number of fake voters exist in Bengal, including infiltrators who have been registered as voters. Adhikari emphasised the need to 'cleanse' the voter list, citing a significant increase in population in districts such as Cooch-Behar, South 24 Parganas, and North 24 Parganas. Adhikari suggested that measures similar to those in Bihar should be taken in West Bengal to address the issue of infiltrators. Opposition parties, including the TMC, have opposed the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, claiming that it would lead to disenfranchisement of marginalised sections of society. On June 24, the Election Commision directed that large sections of voters in Bihar are required to submit proof of citizenship to remain on the electoral rolls. Addressing reporters on Thursday, Adhikari said, 'There are a lot of fake voters in Bengal. Infiltrators are also listed as voters. This has to be cleansed... They way population has increased especially in Cooch-Behar, South 24 Paragana, North 24 Paragana.. it should What is happening in Bihar should also happen in West Bengal...' On the deportation of Bengali-speaking migrant workers in other states, Adhikari claimed that action is being taken against infiltrators, and that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is protecting Rohingya Muslims, who he described as infiltrators rather than refugees. Election Commission Discovers Significant Foreign National Presence During Bihar Voter Registration Review
The Election Commission of India has uncovered a substantial number of foreign nationals from Bangladesh, Nepal, and Myanmar residing in Bihar during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Officials have confirmed that these individuals' names will be excluded from the final voter list scheduled for publication on September 30, 2025, following proper verification procedures. The comprehensive electoral roll cleansing initiative, known as Special Intensive Revision (SIR), commenced on June 25 following the Election Commission's directive issued on June 24. This systematic process aims to purify electoral rolls by removing ineligible names and ensuring only Indian citizens retain voting rights. The revision campaign is set to continue until July 26. More than 77,000 Booth Level Officers, supported by government personnel and political party representatives, are currently engaged in verifying credentials of over 7.8 crore registered voters throughout Bihar. The verification process requires both existing and prospective voters to present documentation establishing their Indian citizenship status. The Election Commission initially mandated all voters to submit comprehensive identity documents, including citizenship verification papers, as part of this rigorous screening process. This requirement ensures thorough authentication of voter eligibility across the state. The Supreme Court recently addressed multiple petitions challenging the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision process in Bihar ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. Opposition leaders, including Trinamool Congress's Mahua Moitra, RJD's Manoj Kumar Jha, Congress's KC Venugopal, and NCP-SP's Supriya Sule, were among the petitioners questioning the revision methodology. While permitting the Election Commission to proceed with the SIR, the Supreme Court instructed the poll body to consider widely available documents such as Aadhaar cards, voter identification cards, and ration cards during the verification process. These documents supplement the 11 official documents originally listed by the central election authority. The Election Commission clarified that while these commonly held documents are incorporated into the ongoing Special Intensive Revision documentation process, they do not independently establish voting eligibility. Additional verification measures remain necessary to confirm citizenship status. Following Bihar's completion, the Election Commission plans to implement identical processes in West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry. Elections in these five states are anticipated to be announced by March or April, as their Legislative Assembly terms conclude in May of the following year. The timing of this comprehensive revision proves particularly significant given Bihar's upcoming assembly elections scheduled for later this year. The systematic approach demonstrates the Election Commission's commitment to maintaining electoral integrity while ensuring only eligible Indian citizens participate in the democratic process.
