Tripura CPM flays vandalism over Congress leader Roy Barman's remark about BJP: ‘What kind of rule of law is this?'

Indian Express26-06-2025
A day after BJP activists broke open the MLA Hostel's gate in Agartala demanding the resignation of Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman over his 'BJP leaders urinate on tribals' remark, Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury targeted Tripura's ruling party on Thursday over rule of law and democratic rights.
'I have seen Sudip Roy Barman's statement…The photo had gone viral. We don't know whether any action has been taken against them. Did he (Sudip Roy Barman) commit any mistake by saying this? If it is a mistake, then you reply either through a press conference or a public meeting, or reply to him or his party,' the CPM MLA said.
Citing incidents of CPM workers being attacked, Chaudhury said his party's office was attacked at Bishalgarh on June 17 and that an attempt had been made to 'foil' a CPM conference at Takarjala in Sepahijala district on Tuesday.
'What kind of democracy is this? What kind of rule of law is this? It's unfortunate,' he said.
'If a party has some flaws, naturally another party will criticise it. If a statement is untrue, the other party will make this clear or condemn the statement. This is our country's political culture. Our democracy and our Constitution allow this,' the CPM leader added.
Chaudhury emphasised that the state must protect constitutional rights, human rights, and natural rights.
Sudip Roy Barman's controversial remark referred to an incident in Madhya Pradesh's Sidhi district where a purported BJP activist, Pravesh Shukla, urinated on a member of the Kol tribe last year.
Defending his remark, Barman said on Wednesday that he had merely stated a fact. 'The reality is that the BJP hates Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, OBC, minorities, etc. How else can someone urinate on another person?' he added.

Cash row: CJI Gavai likely to recuse from hearing Justice Varma's plea, assures urgent hearing

The Supreme Court on Wednesday hinted that the Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai-led Bench will not likely take up for hearing the plea filed by Justice Yashwant Varma challenging his indictment by the three-member in-house committee in the cash-discovery episode. This unfolded when senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Justice Varma, urged CJI Gavai to constitute a Bench for urgent hearing of the matter. At this, CJI Gavai said, 'I think that it may not be proper for me to pick up that matter because I was part of the conversation'. However, the CJI assured Sibal that a Bench will be constituted to hear the plea filed by Justice Varma. 'We will just take a call and constitute a Bench,' said CJI Gavai. The writ petition filed by Justice Varma sought to quash the communication forwarded by then CJI Sanjiv Khanna to the President and then Prime Minister to take action against Justice Varma. As per the petition, the in-house panel acted in a 'pre-determined manner' and denied Justice Varma a fair opportunity to defend himself. On Monday, 145 MPs from both the ruling and Opposition parties submitted an impeachment notice against Justice Varma to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Justice Varma has been in the eye of a storm since the March 14 discovery of the burnt cash in an outhouse of his official residence allotted to him while serving in the Delhi High Court. Following the cash-discovery row, which sent shockwaves across the judicial corridors, Justice Varma was repatriated to the Allahabad High Court, and an in-house probe was set up to probe the allegations. According to the probe committee, both direct and electronic evidence confirmed that the storeroom was under the covert or active control of Justice Varma and his family. By way of strong inferential evidence, the in-house panel said the burnt cash was removed from the storeroom during the early hours of March 15. In conclusion, the three-member inquiry committee, comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, CJ G.S. Sandhawalia of the Himachal Pradesh HC and Karnataka HC's Justice Anu Sivaraman, found the allegations serious enough to merit impeachment proceedings against Justice Varma. It opined that Justice Varma's misconduct was not only proven but also grave enough to warrant his removal under Article 124(4) of the Constitution.

Kiran Kher in trouble: Chandigarh admin issues Rs 13 lakh notice for unpaid govt house rent

Chandigarh, July 23 (UNI) Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kiran Kher has been served a notice by the Chandigarh administration for failing to clear a hefty outstanding licence fee of Rs 12,76,418. The dues pertain to a government house (T-6/23) allotted to her in Sector 7 during her tenure as an MP. The notice, issued by the Assistant Controller (F&A) Rents, was delivered to her residence at House No. 65, Sector 8-A, on June 24, 2025. The notice demands immediate payment of the pending amount, which includes the original licence fee (rent) along with substantial penalties of up to 100% and 200% on certain components. The administration has warned that failure to settle the dues within the stipulated time will attract an additional 12% annual interest on the total outstanding amount. Kher has been instructed to make the payment through a demand draft or bank transfer, but only after verifying the details with the cashier to ensure accuracy. This development has raised eyebrows, as Kher, a prominent public figure known for her contributions to both politics and the entertainment industry, now faces scrutiny over the unpaid dues. The administration's strict stance underscores its commitment to recovering outstanding amounts from allottees of government properties, regardless of their stature. UNI NB PRS
