Will Willie le Roux earn 100th Springbok cap on Saturday?

The South African15 hours ago
The Springboks have always made it clear that the plan was for Willie le Roux to reach the special milestone of 100 Test appearances during the July Tests, although some selection planning has changed after the indifferent showing in the opening game against Italy.
There is a chance that Le Roux could be left to make his 100th appearance next weekend in the one-off game against Georgia, but reaching this special milestone in such a low-key game doesn't seem quite right.
It does seem more likely that Le Roux will be handed the No 15 jersey for this weekend's clash against Italy at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, with Rassie Erasmus set to reveal the team on Tuesday at 15:00.
Springbok teammate Thomas du Toit said it was an exciting prospect for Willie le Roux to become the eighth player in history to earn 100 Test caps if he is selected in the matchday squad.
'Willie is an unbelievable player, and if he gets to play his 100th Test, we will be very proud of him,' said Du Toit. 'It speaks volumes about the player that he is, and it's important to have him in the team. One thing's for sure, if he does play, we will try to make it as special as we can for him.' Springboks vs Italy: Three players who will be on a mission

The Springboks certainly won't be short on motivation when they take on Italy in their second Test in Gqeberha on Saturday, 12 July. While the Boks secured a 42-24 win in Pretoria in their first Test of the season against the Azzurri, there is much to improve on by their standards. While there were players who were on fire, there were also those whose performances wouldn't exactly be a feature in their career highlights reel. So, with another clash against the spirited Italians coming up, here are three players to watch (for different reasons). The Springbok fullback will become the eighth South African to earn 100 Test caps on Saturday. Needless to say, it's a remarkable feat, so it goes without saying that he'd want to have a blinder come the weekend. And it's certainly something he can do. When he's good, he's great. And if he fires in his full-circle moment, it will be an unforgettable occasion. Le Roux made his Test debut against Italy in Durban in 2013, and his milestone will see him join Eben Etzebeth, Jean de Villiers, Tendai Mtawarira, John Smit, Victor Matfield, Bryan Habana, and Percy Montgomery in an elite group as Bok centurions. The flyhalf was in top form against the Barbarians, nailing all five of his attempts off the tee in extremely testing conditions and sparking the Boks' attack after coming on for Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu in the second half. Given all the flak he's copped for his goal-kicking, that area was the most inpressive factor in an overall shining personal performance in a wet and windy Cape Town. His starting berth alongside scrumhalf Grant Williams is a mouth-watering one. And, given the wizardry magical Manie can create, we can see this as another opportunity for him to do what only he can and send out yet another reminder of his abilities (not that it's needed at this point). The Stormers loose forward was initially omitted from the Bok squad, and that alone should fuel him when he comes off the bench. Speculation was rife when Roos was left out of the initial 54-man squad. But, following Bulls No 8 Cameron Hanekom's injury and Roos' call-up, Bok coach Rassie Erasmus explained that his initial omission was 'nothing personal' and that they simply opted for players in better form. That alone should have a galvanising effect when he provides impact off the bench against the Azzurri. Springbok Team: 15 Willie le Roux, 14 Edwill van der Merwe, 13 Canan Moodie, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 Makazole Mapimpi, 10 Manie Libbok, 9 Grant Williams, 8 Jasper Wiese, 7 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 6 Marco van Staden, 5 Ruan Nortjé, 4 Salmaan Moerat (captain), 3 Wilco Louw, 2 Malcolm Marx, 1 Thomas du Toit. Replacements: 16 Jan-Hendrik Wessels, 17 Ox Nché, 18 Asenathi Ntlabakanye, 19 Cobus Wiese, 20 Evan Roos, 21 Cobus Reinach, 22 Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, 23 Ethan Hooker. Le Roux gets Bok 100 against Italy as Erasmus names three uncapped players

Erasmus named an exciting new backline with Edwill van der Merwe and Eastern Cape local Makazole Mapimpi linking up with Le Roux in the back three. André Esterhuizen will partner Canan Moodie in the midfield and Manie Libbok joins forces with Grant Williams at halfback. Up front, Jasper Wiese and Van Staden form a loose trio combination with Pieter-Steph du Toit, while Ruan Nortje and Moerat will command the engine room and Thomas du Toit will pack down with Louw and Marx in the front row. Erasmus named five forwards and three backs on the bench, with Wessels joining fellow front-rowers Nché and Ntlabakanye, along with the versatile Cobus Wiese and Evan Roos. Cobus Reinach, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Hooker will provide backline cover. Du Toit, Nortje, Williams, Mapimpi and Roos make returns from injuries that ruled them out of action at some stage since last season. Commenting on Le Roux earning his 100th Test cap, Erasmus said: 'Willie has been a stalwart for us in the last few years after making his debut against Italy in Durban in 2013 and he's a fantastic playmaker, so we are thrilled to see him achieve this incredible feat.

Veteran fullback Willie le Roux will play in his 100th Test in a new-look backline that does not feature any player who started against the Azzuri in the first clash in Pretoria. Edwill van der Merwe will get his second cap for the world champions as he joins fellow winger Makazole Mapimpi and Le Roux in the back three for the duel in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium (5.10 pm kick-off). The exciting duo of Grant Williams and Manie Libbok will start as scrumhalf and flyhalf, respectively. In a surprising midfield, Canan Moodie partners with André Esterhuizen to complete the backline. Moerat will resume the captaincy duties. There is still no sign of regular skipper Siya Kolisi, who missed the previous two games through injury, as the Boks manage their leader. Erasmus also named three uncapped players, tighthead prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye, utility forward Cobus Wiese and utility back Ethan Hooker, as part of a five-three replacement bench split. Wiese could run out with his World Cup-winning brother Jasper when he takes to the field, and they will become the 37th brother-pairing for the national side. The last pair was Jaden and Jordan Hendrikse. South Africa's eighth Test centurion will be joined by three uncapped players in the #Springboks' match-23 for Saturday's return Test against Italy in Gqeberha 💯#ForeverGreenForeverGold — Springboks (@Springboks) July 8, 2025 Only seven players featured in last weekend's clash after Erasmus promised to ring the changes following a rather disappointing 42-24 victory at Loftus Versfeld. 'Willie has been a stalwart for us in the last few years after making his debut against Italy in Durban in 2013, and he's a fantastic playmaker, so we are thrilled to see him achieve this incredible feat,' Erasmus said about the playmaker's 100th match. 'Only seven players in Springbok history have played 100 Tests before him, and to reach this milestone is testament to the player and team man that Willie is. Having come a long way with him during his career, I have no doubt that he'll put the team before his own achievements this weekend, and as a team we would certainly like to make it a special and memorable occasion for him.' 11 players who are yet to feature for the Boks in 2025 included in the 23 for Saturday – and 3 set for their Test debuts.
