Survey Shows Why People Skip Workouts and How to Fix It

Most of us are no stranger to skipping a workout class. Maybe we were a little too cozy in bed, riding out a hangover, or recovering from a night of tossing and turning. It happens. But turns out, we're creatures of habit in more ways than one. Not only do most people skip workouts for the same reasons, they tend to skip on the same days, too, according to new data from ClassPass, the monthly subscription service that lets members book everything from yoga to HIIT to open gym time.
ClassPass analyzed three years of booking data to see when and why people actually bail on workouts. As it turns out, we're a lot more predictable than we think. The biggest spike in missed classes? July 5th, Daylight Savings Sunday, the day after Election Day, and January 1.
"One of the more surprising patterns we uncovered is how late cancellations spike around specific calendar moments—not just early mornings or weekends," said Jeff Bladt, who leads marketplace strategy at ClassPass. "Year after year, certain dates reliably derail fitness routines."Out of all the skipped dates in the calendar year, January 1 stands out as the most unexpected, Bladt says. While it's the day most associated with fresh starts, it also seems to be the day when the most people ghost their goals just as the new year begins.
"You'd think New Year's Day would be the biggest fitness boom, but it's actually the flakiest day in terms of cancellations," he says. "Across the U.S., more people ghost their workouts on January 1 than any other day."
Out of all the days of the week, the data also revealed that Sunday mornings are the flakiest time slot overall, and early bird classes (think 5 to 6 a.m.) top the list of most likely to be ghosted.
"Both Sunday mornings and early weekday mornings reveal an intention gap between someone's 'planning self' and their 'present self,'" Bladt says. "These time slots usually reflect strong intentions—to start the week fresh, to build a habit, to squeeze in fitness before the day gets busy. But when the alarm goes off, the snooze button often wins."Bladt emphasizes that it's not just one type of workout class taking the hit; everything from HIIT and spin to yoga and strength training sees a drop-off.
"It's more that life happens, people want to sleep in, they prioritize social plans, and they miss those early classes," he says.
Reig McConnell, CPT, CNC, and U.S. Army veteran, has heard just about every excuse for skipping a workout. But he has a few tricks for keeping his clients motivated, starting with helping them stay focused on their purpose.
"To help keep my clients from bailing on their workouts for the long term, I use the analogy of building a house," he says. "Just like a house, your body is built brick by brick. At the end of this month or year, they're going to have to live in what we've built. Reminding them that every workout is a step in the right direction helps keep them motivated throughout the process as they work toward their final goal."

When you live with a chronic condition like HIV, meds are usually a daily occurrence. Something that has to be done to prevent further illness and maintain a positive health status. But it's monotonous. Pill fatigue is real. My pill fatigue is more subconscious, which I'll get into later. I consider daily meds like any other daily routine, like brushing my teeth. Sometimes it's a grind, but it has to be done to maintain good health and a good quality of life. Taking my HIV meds was something I did religiously because it's literally lifesaving. It was no big deal to me. Taking a pill for HIV, diabetes, high blood pressure, or just daily vitamins was all the same to me. But for many, pill fatigue is more serious, to the point they may leave their treatment and take 'pill holidays.' That's where you take a break from taking pills, but it has risks. When you leave HIV treatment, you don't get sick or die immediately. It could take years for the virus to spread and ravage your immune system enough to give opportunistic infections a suitable environment to breed and do damage. Even years away from treatment may not seem abnormal at all. You may feel fine, look fine, and act fine. But your bloodstream is not fine. Your blood is actively at war to save you and losing. As HIV destroys white blood cells that protect you from infection, it becomes more free to breed, and spread throughout your body. It also becomes highly transmissible. Did you catch that last part? And did you catch the implication that meds make the virus untransmittable? Because U=U is a campaign that the advocacy community has been trying to teach people for the last decade. But some have hardened themselves toward HIV and those who live with it, because HIV stigma hasn't changed. Some people still feel fear at the mere mention of HIV. They refuse to accept that HIV is not only treatable, it's completely harmless and untransmittable with effective treatment. But alas, treatment is only effective when taken. As I said, I've had no problem taking meds. But lately, I find myself forgetting to take them. I usually catch it before the day is over, but some of my meds need consistency to be most effective, taken at the same time every day. It could be a serious issue if I continue to forget. I risk my medication losing effectiveness, and that runs the risk of losing access to an entire class of medications. I used to be religious about taking my meds. But over the years, my zeal has diminished. This is what I referred to earlier when I mentioned subconscious pill fatigue (a term I made up). Is that what I'm experiencing? Subconscious pill fatigue? I've taken pills every day for the past 25 years. I didn't think it bothered me, yet I'm forgetting more doses than ever. Am I subconsciously allowing myself to forget? My memory and mental state are certainly factors. Many people who live with HIV develop forgetfulness associated with a neurocognitive decline syndrome, which can happen with HIV. I don't know if I'm experiencing this or just normal aging. But I need to find out. I'm currently working with my doctor to get answers. But forgetting your pills isn't exactly pill fatigue.

Q: I've heard two conflicting things about sun exposure — that you should avoid it and that it's good for you. What should I believe? For decades, many doctors have said that less is more when it comes to sun exposure. Ultraviolet light from the sun can age the skin and cause skin cancer, and people can get vitamin D from food or supplements instead. But in recent years, some scientists have questioned this thinking after research suggested that moderate sun exposure may, at least in certain contexts, have some benefits. And that vitamin D supplements may not always be a good substitute. 'The 'never go outside without S.P.F. 50' approach treated sun exposure as if it were universally harmful,' said Dr. Lucy McBride, an internal medicine physician in Washington, D.C. But 'moderate, thoughtful sun exposure,' in accordance with your risk factors, she added, 'may offer benefits we're still discovering.' Sunshine has a bright side.
