Ekta Kapoor Refutes Smriti Irani's Claims About Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2 Delay, Deletes Post Later
Ekta Kapoor, who is also Smriti Irani's close friend, in an Instagram Story said, no Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi was planned in 2014.
What Happened
During a recent conversation with Barkha Dutt and Karan Johar on an episode of We The Women, Smriti Irani said she "walked away" from the reboot of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi in 2014.
While there was a contract and the set was also ready, Smriti Irani said she didn't take up the project as she received a call from the Prime Minister's Office to take an oath as a cabinet minister in the Narendra Modi-led government. She later served as the Union Minister for Human Resource Development from 2014 to 2016.
"If you look at the Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi journey in totality, the most well-kept secret about it was I had a contract to do it again in 2014, and I walked away from it because I had to serve in the Indian Parliament as a cabinet minister. The set was ready, but there was a phone call from the Prime Minister's office saying that you have to take an oath," she said.
Smriti Irani also spoke about an opportunity she had turned down at the time. "I remember Rishi Kapoor telling me to leave now because to serve your country is a greater service than just doing a movie or doing television," Irani added.
On Thursday, Ekta Kapoor -- who backed Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi under her banner Balaji Telefilms -- on her Instagram Story shared a screenshot from Smriti Irani's conversation in the We The Women episode, bearing the text "I Refused Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi In 2014".

The producer captioned her post as, "When????!! 2014 no Kyunki was planned! Unless there was a set I and the channel ain't know about (sic)"
This post no longer appears on Ekta Kapoor's Instagram Story.
In A Nutshell
Smriti Irani recently said she refused to star in the reboot of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi back in 2014 as she received a call from the Prime Minister's Office to take an oath as a cabinet minister. Days later, the show's producer and her friend Ekta Kapoor questioned her claims in an Instagram Story, saying the follow-up show wasn't planned at the time. The producer later deleted the post from her Instagram Story.
Both Smriti Irani, who starred the main protagonist Tulsi Virani in the show, and Ekta Kapoor's comments come in the run-up to the shooting of the Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi revival.
Amar Upadhyay, who will reprise his role of Tulsi's husband Mihir Virani in the new series, recently revealed that the show's premiere has been postponed.

Some stories feel so personal, they reflect our own lives like a mirror. Exactly 25 years ago, Indian television experienced a turning point. On July 3, 2000, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi premiered, not just launching a mega-hit serial but sparking a cultural phenomenon that would shape generations to come. Even after going off-air in 2008, the Ektaa Kapoor-produced show remains a household name and was remembered for its gripping drama, emotional arcs, and, of course, the unforgettable characters of Tulsi and Mihir. Starring Smriti Irani and Amar Upadhyay in the lead roles, the show not only ruled the TRP charts for years but also became a daily ritual for millions of Indian families. As the show completes 25 glorious years, the buzz surrounding its potential return is already thrilling fans. And on this milestone, producer Ektaa Kapoor and lead stars Smriti Irani and Amar Upadhyay have come forward to reflect on the legacy that continues to shape Indian television. In a heartfelt conversation with The Times of India, Smriti Irani, who became a household name as Tulsi Virani, shared, 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi isn't just a show — it's a shared memory. For those who created it and the millions who embraced it, it was a story of families, faith and the fabric that binds us across generations. Twenty-five years later, it still lives in our hearts. My gratitude to those who made the journey possible." Producer Ekta Kapoor, who created a revolution in Indian soap operas with the show, recalled, 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi still lives in every beat of my heart. When we started, we never imagined Tulsi would become a family to millions. Even today, people remember the title track, the tears and the emotion it sparked. This milestone belongs to every writer, actor, crew member, and most of all, every viewer who made it a part of their lives. We didn't just make a show, we created a bond that still feels like a home." Amar Upadhyay, who played the iconic role of Mihir Virani, spoke with equal emotion: 'Twenty-five years ago, we began a journey that was more than just a show-it was a mirror to a million households, a reflection of traditions, love, trials and the changing face of Indian families. Being part of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi wasn't just a role, it was a responsibility, a privilege and a turning point not just for me but for everyone who lived and breathed this world with us." He added, 'Even today, when someone calls me 'Mihir,' there's a warmth and familiarity in it– like a long-lost family member greeting you after years. That's the kind of love you can't manufacture; it can only be lived." The actor also shared a candid moment from their recent reunion that hints at the unchanged chemistry between the cast. Amar recalled with a smile, 'Smriti hasn't changed a bit. She looked at me and said, 'Tu buddha kab hoga?'" And this is a hint that the offscreen camaraderie between them is still the same, and that's what will make their return even stronger. Addressing the growing excitement around the show's grand comeback, he shared, 'The love story between Tulsi and Mihir has only deepened. Our characters have evolved, and so have we." As the whispers of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi returning to television grow louder, fans across all generations are holding on to hope to see the Virani family once again grace their screens. In CM Saini's tourism push, revival of Haryana Disneyland dream & echoes of INLD's failed 1989 proposal
The amusement park, planned on a 500-acre site near Pachgaon Chowk in Manesar, Gurugram, is strategically located along the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway and Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor, ensuring excellent connectivity. On Wednesday, Chief Minister Saini met Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in New Delhi to discuss strategies for promoting tourism and preserving Haryana's cultural heritage. Central to the discussion was the proposed Disneyland project, which Saini described as a 'game-changing' initiative. Gurugram: In a move to position Haryana as a global tourism hub, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini's government has announced plans to establish a Disneyland theme park in Delhi-NCR, specifically in Gurugram. Saini emphasised that the project would generate significant economic, cultural, and social benefits, not only for Haryana but for India as a whole. 'The Disneyland project will capitalise on Gurugram's market potential and connectivity to create a world-class amusement centre,' he said. 'It will create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, develop infrastructure, and transform the surrounding areas.' Gurugram, home to numerous Fortune 500 companies and the upcoming Global City project, was highlighted as the ideal location. The Chief Minister noted that the project would attract international tourists, boost tourism revenue, and establish Haryana as a prominent destination on the global map. Also read: With Abhay Chautala's coronation as national chief, INLD eyes comeback as Haryana's primary Opposition Echoes of 1989: Chautala's Failed Disneyland Plan The ambitious project, aimed at boosting the state's economy and creating thousands of jobs, has reignited discussions about a similar initiative proposed in 1989 by then-Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala, which faced fierce opposition and was ultimately scrapped. Abhay Singh Chautala, national president of the INLD, alleged while talking to ThePrint that the BJP not just opposed the Disneyland move of his father's government in 1989, but the party also opposed Chautala's move to bring casinos in Gurugram in 2000. 'The BJP and the Congress have never believed in the development of the State. Had the INLD government's move not been blocked in 1989, Haryana would have been a tax-free state in the country and would have the capacity to offer loans to other states. The BJP was supporting the INLD government from outside in 1989 as well as in 2000. However, it sided with Congress when it came to these projects. The BJP should now explain to people what has changed in all these years,' Chautala said. He said that had Chautala not worked hard for development of Gurugram from 1999 to 2005, Gurugram wouldn't have been on the international map today. The 1989 plan envisioned a massive amusement park modelled on Florida's Disneyworld, requiring 28,341 acres of land, including 14,000 acres of prime agricultural land in Gurugram (then Gurgaon). The Haryana government, under Chautala, had even gone as far as to notify this vast area of land under the Land Acquisition Act for the amusement park. The idea was to create a major entertainment hub that, along with Gurugram's development, would significantly change the economic landscape of Haryana. The proposal faced massive public opposition. Farmers in Haryana vehemently protested against the acquisition of their agricultural land for the project. While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was not the primary force, it was part of the broader opposition, aligning with anti-INLD forces and supporting farmers' interests. Political analyst Yoginder Gupta noted, 'The 1989 protests were localised in Gurugram and NCR but gained traction due to the support of all opposition parties, including the BJP. It was not as widespread as the 1999 protests for free electricity, but it was significant.' When Bhajan Lal became Chief Minister in 1991, he scrapped the project, fulfilling an electoral promise to return the land to farmers. The decision was seen as a victory for the Opposition's collective efforts, though Congress led the charge. Accusations of Hypocrisy and Political Responses The revival of the Disneyland project has sparked criticism from opposition leaders, notably INLD MLA from Rania, Arjun Singh Chautala. Speaking to ThePrint on Thursday, Chautala accused the BJP of hypocrisy. 'The BJP has a habit of opposing projects launched by opponents, only to support them when in power,' he said. 'Had the 1989 project materialised, Haryana would have seen significant development and tourism revenue by now.' In response, a senior BJP leader, speaking anonymously, defended the party's earlier stance. 'Our opposition in 1989 was not against development but against the forced acquisition of farmers' land,' the leader said. 'The BJP stands with farmers, and our current project will ensure development without compromising their interests.' The current Disneyland proposal is significantly smaller in scale, requiring only 500 acres compared to the 28,341 acres proposed in 1989. The government has emphasised that the project aligns with modern infrastructure and economic goals, leveraging Gurugram's status as a corporate hub.
