BREAKING NEWS Olympic legend Mary Lou Retton speaks out for the first time since DUI arrest

Daily Mail10-06-2025
Olympic gold medalist Mary Lou Retton has issued a groveling apology in the wake of her DUI arrest, speaking out for the first time since the shocking incident last month.
The 57-year-old retired gymnast appeared in court in West Virginia on Tuesday and has now spoken out for the first time, opening up on her 'completely unacceptable' actions.
On May 17, Retton was found in her car in a parking lot with a screw-top bottle of wine on the passenger seat, before refusing to have her blood tested for alcohol.
In court on Tuesday, Retton entered a no contest plea to a non-aggravated DUI charge, receiving a $100 fine - the standard amount for a first-time offense.
'I take full responsibility for my actions,' she told PEOPLE after the court hearing, her first public statement on the incident nearly a month on.
'What happened was completely unacceptable,' she added, through her attorney Edmund J. Rollo. 'I make no excuses. To my family, friends and my fans: I have let you down, and for that I am deeply sorry.
'I am determined to learn and grow from this experience, and I am committed to making positive changes in my life. I truly appreciate your concern, encouragement and continued support.'
In addition, she asked for 'privacy as she moves forward with her personal and professional life.'
Retton previously courted controversy in 2023, when she was hospitalized with a rare form of pneumonia and her family set up a Spotfund page for support, which went on to raise over half a million dollars.
The family soon drew criticism after refusing to clarify where the donations would be going. Retton's claim to not have insurance was also doubted by some.
Just over a year since the illness left her fighting for her life in a hospital ICU, news of her booze-fueled antics sparked concern as she continues to undergo treatment for long Covid and lung problems.
And according to Shaun Kelley, the brother of her ex-husband Shannon, just one drink is capable of causing a chemical imbalance in Mary Lou's brain because of the medications she's currently taking.
'She couldn't even take a full breath when I talked to her, she takes these little panting breaths,' Shaun told The New York Post about his ex-sister-in-law last week, whom he says has no history of alcohol abuse.
He also added: 'She is on all these meds and one drink could throw off her brain chemistry.'

Peaty targets four gold medals at 2028 Olympics

Great Britain's Adam Peaty is targeting four gold medals in the pool at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. The 30-year-old has previously competed in the 100m breaststroke, 4x100m mixed medley, and 4x100m medley at the Olympics, winning three gold medals and three silver medals. It was confirmed in April 2025 that the 50m breaststroke would be one of three disciplines added to the 2028 programme, with Peaty a three-time world champion and the current world record holder over that distance. Peaty has said he is aiming to compete in both individual disciplines in Los Angeles, while the two medley events have the added incentive of beating defending champions USA on "home turf". "I'm very excited the 50m has been added but I will do the 100m as well, so that will give me four opportunities to [win a] medal," he told BBC Radio 5 Live. "We want to beat America on home turf in that medley. We've got the incredible Oliver Morgan on backstroke, some very strong times - and that's always been our weak link at previous Olympics. It's very exciting." Peaty took a break from swimming after winning silver in the 100m breaststroke at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. He previously took an extended break from sport in 2023 to prioritise his mental health after experiencing a "major, major burnout". However, while "the athlete in my head" is missing not competing at the ongoing World Championships in Singapore, Peaty has a clear plan for his return to competition and is training "a lot smarter" as an older athlete."I made the call in January or February, when I started to get back into training, that this Worlds wouldn't be for me because it would be too rushed," Peaty said. "I want to be at the [2026] Commonwealth Games. I want to be at the Europeans next year. I'm never going to take my spot for granted - just because I've got a world record doesn't mean I'm going to be there, it's ridiculous. I've got to earn those places, which excites me. "I did some race prep before I came out here to see where I'm at and we're in a good place for October World Cups in America and Canada."On his training, he added: "If you'd told me 10 years ago I'd be doing a pilates session this morning, I would have said 'no way'. "I look back on certain camps and I was chasing numbers, I needed the outputs, the validation. But I wasn't swimming the smartest in my head in terms of recovery, mental health and the warning signs of what burnout looks like. "[Now] it's what I decide. This block [in Los Angeles], I know it's a holiday so I'm just going to see how I feel. When I get back into England I'm ramping up for the Commonwealth Games - 4km sessions, 4.5km - and that gives me the best results."

Olympic star 'seriously' hurt in climbing accident

Germany's double Olympic biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier has been "seriously injured" in a severe mountaineering accident in Pakistan. The incident occurred in the Karakorum mountains on Monday when the 31-year-old was caught in a rockfall. Bad weather and the remoteness of the area prevented a rescue helicopter from reaching her until Tuesday morning. Faizullah Faraq, a provincial government spokesperson, said the rescue operation is still under way with the co-operation of the Pakistan army. In a statement to German broadcaster ZDF, Dahlmeier's management said: "Laura Dahlmeier was climbing with her mountaineering partner on 28 July when she was caught in the rockfall. The accident took place around noon local time at an altitude of approximately 5,700 metres. "Her partner immediately called emergency services and a rescue operation began immediately. "Due to the remoteness of the area, a helicopter was only able to reach the site of the accident on the morning of 29 July."Dahlmeier has represented Germany at two Winter Olympics, winning two golds and one bronze medal in Pyeongchang in was the first woman to win both the sprint and pursuit event at the same Olympics, and won a further 15 medals, including seven golds, across five World Championships before retiring from competition in May 2019 aged 25.

German Olympic champion Dahlmeier seriously injured in Pakistan mountaineering accident

PESHAWAR, Pakistan, July 29 (Reuters) - German biathlete and double Olympic champion Laura Dahlmeier has been seriously injured after being struck by a rockfall while attempting to summit a 6,094-metre peak in northern Pakistan, a provincial government spokesperson and a Pakistani climbing federation said on Tuesday. The accident occurred on Monday when Dahlmeier was hit by a landslide in Hushe Valley in the northern mountain range in Gilgit-Baltistan province, said spokesperson Faizullah Faraq, adding that bad weather meant a helicopter had been unable to reach the site. The rescue operation is underway with the cooperation of the Pakistan army, Faraq added. The incident occurred around noon on July 28, at an altitude of approximately 5,700 meters at Laila Peak, said Alpine Club of Pakistan, a National Mountaineering and Sport Climbing Federation. Dahlmeier, 31, was climbing with her mountaineering partner, Marina Eva, when a sudden rockfall hit her, resulting in significant injuries, it said in a statement. Its vice president Karrar Haidri said Dahlmeier was seriously injured. Dahlmeier retired from the sport in 2019, aged 25, a year after becoming the first female biathlete to achieve a sprint and pursuit double at the same Olympics. Her management did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment from Reuters. Germany's ZDF broadcaster said that a helicopter overflight on Tuesday had found no signs of life. The country's northern mountainous regions have experienced heavy flooding and landslides, killing several local tourists during the current monsoon spell of rains. Flooding and other rain-related accidents have killed 288 people in Pakistan since the monsoon season began in late June, says the country's National Disaster Management Authority.
