Ben Askren released from hospital, delivers tearful video message on ride home
An MMA and wrestling legend, Askren revealed he was released from the hospital Tuesday nearly two months after he entered due to a severe case of pneumonia. Askren underwent a double lung transplant four weeks ago.
"Day 59, I'm out with my beautiful wife supporter," Askren said. "Man, that was a long journey, and it's not over because I still can't really walk. I've got to reteach myself to do that, among many other things. I guess I can make light of it because it was me, and I don't really remember it. ... I don't remember 35 days of this journey. I think surgery was 24 or 25 days ago. It was hard. It was hard.
"I said this already in one of the videos, but the support you guys gave me, whether it was starting a GoFundMe, whether it was helping my kids and wife get through it, I had friends come from all over the country to hang out for a couple days. It meant so much. It was so great to just have all the support and all the love. Hopefully I'm not in this situation again for a really, really, really, really long time. I plan on living a while. Thank you guys again for all the positive comments online, everything. It means so much. Love you guys."
Askren, 40, recently revealed he died four times as he battled for his life. He lost 50 pounds in 45 days and was not aware for nearly half of that time. Askren said when he became conscious, he read through all of the supportive messages and felt as if he had attended his own funeral. He was on a ventilator prior to his transplant procedure.
It's still unclear how Askren ended up being hospitalized, though he and his wife Amy have indicated they might reveal more details as time progresses.
The news drew widespread reaction from the combat sports world, with numerous athletes, wrestlers, and the UFC publicly expressing thoughts and prayers for the former ONE and Bellator champion. The UFC's June 14 broadcast featured a segment wishing Askren well.
A T-shirt fundraiser has been launched to help with Askren's medical bills, as well as his mission to help support high-level athletes. After his win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. last month, Jake Paul used his post-fight interview time to express support for Askren and raise awareness about his life-changing situation.
Dana White was asked and confirmed that he donated $10,000 to Askren's GoFundMe.
Askren retired from MMA in 2019 but returned for a one-off boxing bout vs. Paul in 2021. Widely considered one of the greatest amateur wrestlers in U.S. history, Askren remains heavily involved with the wrestling community and recently joined Hulk Hogan's Real American Freestyle.

ABU DHABI – Like Khabib Nurmagomedov, Javier Mendez is not underestimating Jack Della Maddalena. Former 155-pound champion Islam Makhachev (27-1 MMA, 16-1 UFC) will look to claim a second UFC belt when he challenges welterweight champion Della Maddalena (18-2 MMA, 8-0 UFC) later in the year. Nurmagomedov called Della Maddalena Makhachev's toughest fight – even over lightweight champion Ilia Topuria, and their head coach Mendez agrees. "I'm going to have to one million percent agree with Khabib, I think this is our toughest test," Mendez told MMA Junkie. "This is my and Khabib's biggest responsibility to make sure we get Islam in tip-top shape and ready to do what we think and what we believe he will do, and that's win, but it's not going to be easy. "If we make it look easy, it's because we were properly prepared, and Jack just happened to give us what we needed, but this is by no means a walkover fight. This is a really tough fight, and we have immense respect for Jack and their team and what they can do." So what makes Della Maddalena such a threat? "I think what makes JDM so dangerous No. 1 is he's unbeaten for quite a while," Mendez said. "He's had quite a long win streak, and the fact that this guy mixes it up extremely well. "With Islam, I've always told everybody, we can switch up second for second, minute for minute, round for round. Whatever Khabib and I, and the other coaches need to do, we will do and Islam will follow our instructions. He always has. If there's one thing I can say about Islam is whatever I say, Khabib says, we're on the same track, we're not on the same track, he listens to us."

Gilbert Burns in 'concussion protocol,' wants Daniel Rodriguez for UFC return
ABU DHABI – Gilbert Burns has a name in mind for his next UFC opponent. Burns (22-9 MMA, 15-9 UFC) is currently dealing with the physical aftermath of a first-round TKO loss to unbeaten Michael Morales at UFC Fight Night 256 in May, which marked a fourth consecutive defeat for the one-time welterweight title challenger. He hopes he's cleared by doctors in the coming months, however, and Burns said he's looking at a showdown with Daniel Rodriguez, who is on a three-fight winning streak after edging Kevin Holland on the scorecards at UFC 318 this month. "I'm looking toward December," Burn told MMA Junkie. "I had a little concussion, I'm still not able to come back, so I've still got to get a few more things in the protocol to get able to get back to training. I've still got to take it easy a bit. It was a hard one, but I'm looking toward December. I just saw Daniel Rodriguez just got a nice win against Kevin Holland. He's ranked now. I think that should be a fun one. Me and Daniel Rodriguez in December, maybe January." Burns said his concussion came with the knockout blow from Morales in the octagon. The 39-year-old said he's "feeling much better now," but it being intelligent with his recovery process and won't allow himself to do contact training until fully cleared.
