Iraq launches Arab nuclear crisis cell over Iran-Israel tensions

Shafaq News18-06-2025
Shafaq News/ Iraq has launched a regional crisis cell to respond to potential nuclear emergencies, as Israeli military operations targeting Iranian nuclear facilities escalate.
In a statement, the National Nuclear, Radiological, Chemical, and Biological Regulatory Commission (I-NRC) announced on Wednesday the formation of the joint operations room, in coordination with Arab counterparts, to monitor radiological risks stemming from ongoing military strikes.
'The goal is to safeguard populations, protect the environment, and uphold nuclear safety and security,' it explained.
The crisis unit was reportedly approved during a high-level virtual meeting chaired by Salem Hamdi, Director-General of the Arab Atomic Energy Agency, and Sabah Hassan Al-Hussaini, Head of the Arab Network of Nuclear Regulators (ANNuR). Representatives from nuclear regulatory authorities in Jordan, Lebanon, Yemen, Kuwait, Libya, Bahrain, Tunisia, and Sudan also participated.

32 Killed, thousands flee Cambodia-Thailand conflict

Shafaq News - Phnom Penh/ Bangkok At least 32 people were killed and more than 35,000 displaced during three days of cross-border fighting between Cambodia and Thailand, Cambodian Defense Ministry confirmed on Saturday. The clashes, which began on Thursday, involved heavy artillery fire in disputed areas along Cambodia's Preah Vihear province and Thailand's Ubon Ratchathani province. Phnom Penh reported 13 Cambodian deaths — eight civilians and five soldiers — alongside 21 troops and more than 50 civilians wounded. More than 35,800 civilians were also evacuated from high-risk zones in Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey, and Pursat provinces. Meanwhile, Thai officials confirmed 15 fatalities, including one soldier. The escalation followed a deadly border incident on May 28, when a Cambodian soldier was killed, reigniting a longstanding territorial dispute between the two Southeast Asian countries. During a closed-door UN Security Council session on Friday, Cambodia's Ambassador Chhea Keo called for 'an immediate and unconditional ceasefire,' emphasizing the need for a peaceful resolution. "How can they accuse us — a small nation with a military three times smaller and no air force — of initiating an attack against a much larger neighbor?" Keo remarked. While the UN urged both sides to exercise maximum restraint and seek a diplomatic settlement, no ceasefire had been declared. The border, particularly the area surrounding the 11th-century Preah Vihear temple, has long been a source of friction. The International Court of Justice awarded the temple to Cambodia in 1962, but tensions have persisted. Past confrontations in the region, including a major flare-up in 2011, resulted in dozens of fatalities and widespread displacement.

Russia warns NATO: Kaliningrad attack means overwhelming response

Shafaq News – Moscow Russia warned on Saturday that any NATO military action against its Kaliningrad enclave would prompt an immediate and overwhelming response, potentially involving nuclear weapons. Speaking to RIA Novosti, Nikolai Patrushev, a top aide to President Vladimir Putin and chairman of Russia's Naval Collegium, affirmed that Moscow would employ 'all forces and means at its disposal' to defend Kaliningrad in line with its military doctrine. 'Russia has all the necessary military instruments to guarantee the region's security,' he emphasized. His comments followed recent remarks by General Christopher Donahoe, commander of US Army forces in Europe and Africa, who revealed that NATO had developed plans to rapidly neutralize Russian defenses in Kaliningrad as part of a broader effort to reinforce deterrence on its eastern border. NATO countries have been expanding ground capabilities and deepening military-industrial cooperation as part of the alliance's post-Ukraine war strategy to counter Russia, Donahoe outlined earlier this month. Patrushev accused the West of reviving historical aggression toward Russia, drawing parallels between current NATO policies and those once embraced by Germany's military elites. 'Today's Western strategists are voicing plans that would have been welcomed by the Prussian Junkers and their Nazi descendants—who rightly ended up on the dustbin of history,' he argued. 'I have no doubt that the same fate awaits modern warmongers.' Kaliningrad, a heavily militarized Russian exclave wedged between Poland and Lithuania on the Baltic Sea, hosts Russia's Baltic Fleet and advanced missile systems. The territory has become a focal point in the growing standoff between Moscow and NATO since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
