Patna: The state-of-the-art sports facility constructed beneath a flyover in the city's R-Block area has fallen into disrepair just 18 months after its inauguration. The facility, developed at a cost of Rs 22 lakh through a bank's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding, was designed to provide recreational space for local residents and promote physical fitness.
The project, inaugurated by then deputy CM
Tejashwi Prasad Yadav
in Oct 2023, initially garnered attention when he played cricket at the venue. However, since then, the facility remains largely unused and locked, with minimal public access.
The 5,000 square feet space features a 2,000 square feet badminton court and a 3,000 square feet cricket ground, complete with iron fencing, benches and decorative lighting. The initiative was inspired by similar successful projects in Navi Mumbai and Ghaziabad.
The court was developed by the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC).
Tejashwi came here, played cricket, and hit fours and sixes, but after his visit, people were never seen playing here. It always remains locked. Initially, its condition was fine, but now there is no one to maintain it. The PMC organised a match here, but it was only for the staff and officials.
Patna municipal commissioner, Animesh Kumar Parashar, acknowledged the maintenance issue, stating, "The facility has suffered due to lack of regular activities.
We are planning to revitalise the space with weekly matches every Saturday."
He also announced plans to upgrade the facility, including replacing the damaged selfie point with a new stone structure using materials brought from Rajasthan, and later developing an open gym here.
The PMC has also developed the area under the flyover from R-Block roundabout to Patna Junction, where earlier the traffic used to move at a snail's pace.
There was no parking space for the vehicles as the space under the flyover was occupied by local vendors and makeshift stalls. So the PMC decided to take it in its possession.
The project was part of a larger initiative to utilise spaces under flyovers effectively. Similar sports facilities were proposed for locations near Gaighat Judicial Academy, Rajendra Nagar bridge and Raja Bazar flyover, though these plans are yet to materialise.

‘F1' box office collections day 9: Brad Pitt starrer picks up speed, crosses Rs 44.5 cr mark in India

(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) After a solid first week and a slightly muted second Friday, 'F1' found its rhythm again on Saturday. The film added an estimated Rs 5.75 crore on Day 9, bringing its total India net collection to Rs 44.5 crore across all languages, according to the Sacnilk website. Strong turnout in evening and night shows Saturday's growth came largely thanks to strong occupancy in the English 2D version. The film recorded an impressive overall occupancy of 57.42% across India. Morning shows were relatively modest at just under 30%, but afternoon screenings jumped to nearly 59%, followed by packed evening (69%) and night shows (71.88%). 03:50 Kareena Kapoor FANGIRLS Over Brad Pitt after watching 'F1' On track for a strong second weekend If Sunday continues this upward trend, the film could comfortably cross Rs 50 crore by early next week — a strong showing for a Hollywood sports drama in India. While weekday numbers held steady around Rs 3.5 crore, this Saturday bump proves that F1 still has fuel in the tank. And with no major competition in its genre, the film might just keep cruising through the coming week. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, 'F1' stars Brad Pitt in the lead. The movie has an impressive supporting cast that includes Javier Bardem, Kerry Condon, Damson Idris, and Tobias Menzies. Our verdict ETimes rated the film with 3.5 stars and our review reads, "Brad Pitt nails the role of a driver with laid-back arrogance, shining in every scene—whether he's strutting in with retro swagger or brushing off the media with monosyllabic replies. Don't miss the finale, where it's just him in the cockpit, the world around him fading into silence—what he calls 'flying.' Damson Idris is equally compelling as the new-age driver, skillfully balancing raw talent with the modern demands of social media and public presence. Kerry Condon as Kate McKenna stands her ground as the APXGP technical director who's trying to prove her mettle in the male bastion. Javier Bardem, as the flamboyant and desperate team owner, injects the narrative with charm."

Beyond boundaries: These girls hit the cricket field daily — for freedom

Gurgaon: Every day, at the crack of dawn, before Millennium City stirs to life, around 25 young women pick up their bats and pads, not necessarily aiming for a place in a club, college or state team, but in defiance of gender stereotypes imposed on them. A cricket ground in Kadipur has become an arena of liberation for these girls, who are not just from the city but also other parts of south Haryana. For 16-year-old Kajal, cricket isn't just a sport, it's a statement of identity. After leading her team to victory at the national games in Panchkula, she made a decision that went beyond the boundary line. Her long hair, kept for years to please her mother, had to go. "Cut it so short that no strand comes in my eyes while I play," she told the barber after winning the nationals. But Kajal doesn't "want to be described as just a woman cricketer". "When gender is emphasised in sports, especially for women, it overshadows the athlete. People tend to see you as a woman in sports, rather than simply a sportsperson." The same determination defines her daily routine— running 1.5km to practise rather than taking the local transport to the cricket ground. "What kind of a sportsperson would I be if I can't even run a kilometre a day," she says. Kajal isn't alone trying to make a mark. Tanu (18), from a family of six sisters, is also scripting her story through cricket. "I would wake up before everyone else, finish all the household chores so my mother wouldn't have a reason to stop me," she says. Once, when locked in her room to prevent her from playing, she escaped when her mother was in the kitchen. "My mother beat me up when I returned. But it didn't matter. I had played enough cricket for the day," she smiles. But cricket wasn't her one true love. She started with badminton, then shifted to cricket after watching other girls play. As a left-handed batsman and part-time bowler, Tanu still remembers earning Rs 200 and player of the match trophy in a game, which gave "one more reason" to her family to allow her to play. For Harshita (18), the pursuit of cricket meant dropping out of college for a year. Now studying in Rewari and training in Gurgaon, she navigates the two cities to keep her dream alive. "Govt colleges in Gurgaon don't even have a girls' team. It's never been easy — managing academics in one city and training in another. But I'll do whatever it takes to keep playing," she insists. The girls aren't waging a lonely battle. Coach Ajit Singh, who started an academy in 2009, has been pushing their cause at every platform possible. He has seen his team become champions in multiple age groups at the School Games Federation of India tournaments. It was a community effort that transformed their training ground — once a barren patch dotted with Babul trees — into a proper cricket field three years ago. "A local councillor helped bring in debris from a nearby road and houses that were demolished. A municipal tender was issued to supply soil and grass. Thus, the pitch took shape three years ago," says Singh. But coach Singh rues the lack of consistent support from education and sports departments. He relies mainly on local corporate professionals and former playing colleagues for donations of bats, balls, and gear, and for funds for the tournaments he organises. One of Singh's supporters, who regularly donates equipment for the budding cricketers, believes the women's game should be celebrated as much as other leagues. "While everybody celebrates IPL and cheers for their favourite teams, few know that there is a women's premier league too. Why can't we celebrate that as well? Ajit used to play with us. One day, he came up with an idea of a women's cricket team and we said 'why not?'. Though we can't train them through the day as we work in corporate setups, we can support them with equipment and funds. So, we do that," he says. In a state with a skewed gender ratio, these young cricketers are writing a new narrative. With every ball bowled and a run scored, they are breaking boundaries.

Ravi Shastri Makes Major Reveal On Vaibhav Suryavanshi: 'He Has Been Offered With...'

Last Updated: Ravi Shastri has lauded 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi for managing fame well under Rahul Dravid's guidance. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has revealed that while prodigal talent Vaibhav Suryavanshi has already received quite a few lucrative endorsement deals, he is handling the fame well and with Rahul Dravid by his side, the former Indian cricketer is helping him stay grounded. After two 40+ and one 80+ score, Suryavanshi blasted his way to a 78-ball 143, a knock studded with 10 fours and 13 sixes. Suryavanshi first made headlines during the IPL 2025 mega auction, when he was bought by the Rajasthan Royals for Rs 1.1 crore, becoming the youngest ever to be picked in the history of the IPL Auction. En route to scoring 101 off 38 deliveries, Suryavanshi smashed the second-fastest hundred in Indian Premier League history and the youngest ever to do so. Shastri, besides Michael Atherton and Dinesh Karthik, was left with no choice but to hijack the India vs England broadcast with the mention of Suryavanshi, revealing that the latter has already been approached for some lucrative endorsement deals. 'I was speaking to Kumar Sangakkara at the back of the box yesterday, and he said he's been flooded with endorsement offers already, but how he's handling it is very important. He has got a good bloke in Rahul Dravid there. He's a mentor, a coach. He is keeping him on the ground. My word, what a talent at 14," Shastri said while commentating. With this explosive innings, Suryavanshi has become the youngest Indian to score a Youth ODI hundred, breaking Sarfaraz Khan's 10-year-old record. Sarfaraz had scored a hundred at 15 years and 338 days against South Africa U19 12 years ago. Suryavanshi's knock also shattered the record for the fastest Youth ODI hundred ever. Pakistan's Kamran Ghulam held this record for his 53-ball century against England U19 in 2013.
