PPR, PA rent arrears reach RM70 million
KUALA LUMPUR: The total amount of unpaid rent for the People's Housing Project (PPR) and Public Housing (PA) under the purview of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has reached RM70 million, said Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif.
She said the arrears were affecting the maintenance and management of facilities for communities in areas under DBKL's supervision.
Maimunah said DBKL had taken several steps to deal with the arrears, such as cutting off water supply, issuing notices, holding financial advocacy programmes and offering tenants an instalment payment plan,
'This initiative is vital so that the rent collected can be used to provide better services for residents,' she said at the Safe City Community Wellbeing Programme here today.
In addition, Maimunah said DBKL was considering offering PPR and PA units for sale to tenants who could afford to purchase them.
'There was a decision in 2015 to suspend (the sale), but I have since reviewed the decision, and if the tenants are financially capable, we can consider selling the units,' she said.
Among the other matters addressed by Maimunah during the programme were issues concerning waste management, traffic congestion, and drug abuse.

'The various initiatives carried out over the past three years have shown encouraging progress, reflecting the state government's determination to bring about positive changes for the people,' he said. According to Saarani, several economic indicators show that Perak has successfully risen from the downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. 'The state was once on the brink of recession, with a deficit of RM70 million, but we have rebounded with a surplus for three consecutive years, including RM64 million in 2023, the highest in Perak's history.

Discounted monthly parking in KL
Kuchai Entrepreneur Park residents used to receive up to three summonses a day for parking in front of their units. — Filepic KUALA Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is running a trial for its monthly parking pass, specially designed for mixed-development areas, in Kuchai Entrepreneurs Park. Seputeh People's Representative Council Zone 6 chairman Alvin T. Ariaratnam told StarMetro that residents were being offered a parking pass priced at RM70, which was a substantial discount compared to the original RM140 pass designated for suburban areas with activities. 'However, holders can only use the RM70 pass within Kuchai Entrepreneurs Park,' he said, adding that the trial project started on June 24. DBKL executive director (management) Nor Azlina Mohd Saad told StarMetro earlier that the price was agreed by both City Hall and Seputeh MP's office. She also said the trial would run for at least two weeks and a post-mortem would be conducted after the trial period. 'If the trial is successful, we will expand the initiative to other areas in Kuala Lumpur,' she said during a town hall session for DBKL's 2026 budget at Institut Latihan DBKL. She added that each residential unit could apply for only one pass. Kuchai Entrepreneurs Park is a mixed development area, parts of which have commercial units on the lower floors and residential units on the upper floors. In StarMetro's March 4 article 'Residents decry frequent summonses in Kuchai Entrepreneurs Park', residents were unhappy with DBKL issuing them parking summonses up to three times a day for parking outside the shophouses where they live. Kuchai Entrepreneurs Park Residents' Association advisor Banie Chin was reported as saying that the over 3,500 residents should be allowed to enjoy some parking fee exemptions. He had suggested that DBKL provided stickers for residents' vehicles so that enforcement personnel could refrain from issuing them summonses. 'DBKL could also consider establishing designated parking spots for residents. 'If this is not feasible, DBKL could consider reducing the rates for hourly parking and monthly parking pass,' he said. Currently, the hourly parking rate in Kuchai Entrepreneurs Park is RM1 per hour.

KUALA LUMPUR : The Kuala Lumpur Local Plan (PTKL) aims for 70% of the public to be using public transport by 2040, says city mayor Maimunah Sharif. This is in conjunction with PTKL 2040's primary goal of shaping Kuala Lumpur into an all-inclusive 'green' city. In particular, DBKL aims to implement an efficient, low-carbon mobility system city-wide. With 191 initiatives outlined in the plan, PTKL's 'City for All' theme places a heavy focus on sustainability, with the development and maintenance of green spaces a key concept in its spatial planning. During a press briefing, Maimunah said DBKL might provide incentives to increase population density around transit zones where LRT or MRT stations are located. 'This is common in Japan, where people work, live, and play around transit zones. This helps lessen congestion and steers us in the direction of a low-carbon city,' she said. Much of PTKL 2040's zoning revolves around coordinating with the framework of Kuala Lumpur's railway systems, especially the upcoming MRT3 network. PTKL aims to create a transport network that allows the public to go from place to place with a walking distance of less than 400m. There have been various public concerns regarding the accessibility of Kuala Lumpur's public transport system in recent years. Transport think tank My Mobility Vision identified first- and last-mile connectivity as one of the primary issues steering the public towards private vehicle use.
