UP: Protests and scuffles during Muharram processions; several detained, 1 injured

In Kushinagar, an Islamic flag was allegedly hoisted and slogans were raised while a Muharram procession was passing a Shiva temple, they said. People had a run-in with police in Bahraich, alleging that some officers insulted Ali Khamenei, Supreme Leader of Iran and a Shia cleric, while traders in Bareilly held a sit-in after a platform set up for a Muharram procession was allegedly vandalised. Kushinagar/Bareilly/Bahraich (UP), Jul 6 (PTI) Some people were detained and a boy was injured in incidents related to Muharram processions in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, police said. Police said some people posted a purported video of the incident on social media, further escalating tensions. The alleged incident happened near Gulharia in the Khadda police station area in Kushinagar. Khadda Station House Officer (SHO) Harshvardhan Singh said some youths were taken into custody in connection with this incident. In Tekuatar Bazaar, an altercation over DJ music escalated to a ruckus between two groups, in which one Iklakh (8) sustained a head injury. He is currently receiving medical treatment. Ramkola SHO Anand Gupta confirmed that police have brought the situation under control and some people have been detained. Superintendent of Police Santosh Kumar Mishra said that police forces have been deployed at both locations to ensure the situation remains under control. Police in Kushinagar said they were both small disputes but adequate forces have been stationed at both places to maintain peace. A dispute erupted in Bahraich's Nanpara Kotwali area, where people participating in the Muharram procession alleged that a policeman hit a poster of Shia religious leader Khamenei with a stick and then removed it. They alleged that he called Khamenei and those at the procession 'terrorists'. Protesters briefly halted the procession but later resumed after police and other officials intervened and assured action. Police officials claimed, 'The matter has been resolved. The procession is being carried out peacefully.' In a purported video that surfaced online, people at the procession demanded the police officer's suspension. 'My leader, Khamenei sahab, was called a terrorist. Are these terrorists?' a youth said in the clip. In Bareilly, tensions rose after a platform set up near the spot where the 'taziya' is to be placed was allegedly vandalised. Angry traders shut down shops and protested on the streets. Police arrived to calm the situation and registered a case. Traders, however, sat on a sit-in, demanding the arrest of the culprits and warning they would not allow the 'taziyas' to be moved until arrests were made. Senior officials assured traders of action and arrests. 'Police registered a case and took immediate action, detaining two women and three other accused, after which the traders calmed down, ' Additional SP North Anshika Verma said. 'The incident reportedly occurred late Saturday night in Faridpur's Mohalla Sahukara, where miscreants allegedly damaged the platform and attempted to break the shutter of a shop, where the 'taziya' was to be placed,' Verma said. Some traders saw CCTVs of the alleged vandalism and the situation escalated Sunday morning. The 'taziyas' were only moved after assurances of action from senior officials, Verma added. Moral policing resurfaces in Dakshina Kannada; two arrested for insulting minors in public

'Moral policing' resurfaced in Dakshina Kannada with the incident of two persons allegedly waylaying two minors, a boy and a girl, insulting them in public and posting the video of the insult on social media in Puttur on Saturday. The two persons— Purushottam of Kudmaru near Kadaba, 43, and Ramachandra of Aryapu in Puttur, 38 — were arrested by Puttur Town police for the abuse and insult of minors. In a press release, the police stated that the boy and girl went to Beeramale Betta in Puttur on Saturday and were talking to each other when the accused persons, thinking that the boy belonged to a different religion from the girl's, confronted him. The two men then abused the minors in public and recorded it on their mobile phones. In doing so, they attracted public attention and people assembled at the spot. Then, the accused posted a video of the abuse on Instagram and WhatsApp, said the police. Superintendent of Police K. In the complaint, the minor boy's father accused Purushottam and Ramachandra of falsely projecting his son's religion and maligning the two minors in public. He sought action against the accused persons who tried to 'create communal tension'. The police registered his complaint for offences under Sections 126(2), 352, 351(2), 353(1)(C), 57, 196(1)(a) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The two accused were being questioned, the police said.

Five cops injured in Ujjain after Muharram procession participants use horse to ram into barricades on prohibited route

Five policemen were injured in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain on Sunday when participants of the Muharram procession rammed the ceremonial horse into barricades to enter a prohibited route. An official said that a lathi charge was carried out to bring the situation under control near Khajurwadi Masjid under Jiwajiganj police station limits after some of those taking part in the procession clashed with police. 'The route had been finalised in advance, and organisers of the procession were clearly instructed not to take horses through prohibited paths. Despite this, those in the procession tried to force their way after getting the horse to ram into the barricades,' Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma said. 'We had to resort to a lathi charge to disperse the crowd. They fled, leaving the horse behind,' he added. Jiwajiganj Station House Officer Vivek Kanodia said the following policemen were injured in the incident and received first aid at the district hospital: Assistant sub-inspector Khuman Singh Kelwa Head Constable Mukesh Munia Head Constable Anil Sisodia Head Constable Chandrapal Constable Shyam Singh SHO Kanodia said that the horse used to topple the barricade belongs to one Irfan alias Lalla from Begum Bagh. 'Sixteen persons, including the organiser, were booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rioting, unlawful assembly and obstructing public servants from discharging their duty.' Meanwhile, communal tension flared in Jattari town, about 40 km from Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh, on Sunday following reports that unidentified persons desecrated the tomb of a revered Sufi saint located at a graveyard in the town's main market area. As news of the incident spread, a crowd began to gather near the shrine of Hafiz Allah Mehar Shah, prompting senior police officials to rush to the scene and calm the situation. Authorities assured the public that the damage to the tomb and the surrounding metal railing would be repaired immediately and that CCTV cameras would be installed at the shrine complex to prevent future incidents.
