The Qatar national football team arrived in Tashkent for their next FIFA World Cup 2026 AFC Asian Qualifiers Group A match against Uzbekistan, to be played on Tuesday. Al Annabi's Spanish coach Luiz Lopetegui has called up Nabil Erfan of Al Wakrah and Mohammed Ayash of Al Duhail to the squad that will face Uzbekistan. Qatar have already qualified for the playoff stage having defeated Iran 1-0 in their last match at home. Qatar have 13 points with four wins. Iran top the group with 20 points, followed by Uzbekistan (18), the UAE (14), Qatar (13), Kyrgyzstan (7), and North Korea (3). Iran and Uzbekistan have both secured automatic qualification to FIFA World Cup 2026. As many as 18 teams have qualified for the current stage that was divided into three groups, each containing six teams competing in a split league system of two home and away stages. The first and second-placed teams from each group qualify directly for the World Cup. The third and fourth-placed teams in each group advance to the fourth round, which will see the teams divided into two groups of three. The top team in each group will qualify for the World Cup, while the second-placed teams will play a continental play-off to qualify for FIFA World Cup 2026 to be stage in the US, Canada and Mexico.

Myles Lewis-Skelly signs new long-term deal with Arsenal

PA Media/dpa London Myles Lewis-Skelly has signed a new Arsenal contract on the back of a breakthrough campaign last season. Lewis-Skelly, 18, made 39 appearances for the Gunners last term to establish himself as Mikel Arteta's first-choice left-back. He also earned his first three England caps, becoming the youngest England player to score on his debut in a 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Albania in March. The teenager has now been rewarded with a new deal, which the PA news agency understands runs for five years. Lewis-Skelly's previous deal was due to expire at the end of next term, and there had been speculation that some of Europe's leading clubs were ready to pounce if Arsenal could not agree fresh terms. However, the academy graduate said he was only interested in staying with the Gunners. 'I'm so proud and happy,' he said on the club website. 'I know those words are simple, but I think they sum up how I feel signing for this club. I'm a fan and it's like a dream come true. 'I've embodied the values of Hale End and come through. I've still got a lot of years ahead of me, so if I can keep staying humble and being a good person, that's the most important thing to me. 'I know I've taken a lot of experience from the games about the positive moments, the mistakes that I've made. I'm definitely more ready now for the next season. I just want to keep learning and keep improving. 'I want a legacy. I want to win everything there is to win in the game. I want to win trophies on the biggest stages whilst being a person that's always learning and stays grounded, which is so important.' He is the second Arsenal player to agree to a new contract this summer following defensive colleague Gabriel.

Former Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana announces retirement

PAMedia/dpa London Former Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana says he has 'no regrets' after calling time on a playing career spanning nearly 20 years. The 37-year-old represented Southampton, Bournemouth, Liverpool, Brighton & Hove Albion and England, earning 34 caps and scoring three goals for his country, including the goal in Sam Allardyce's only England game in charge - a 1-0 victory over Slovakia. Lallana spent the majority of his career with Southampton, where he began his senior career in 2006, then returned for a second spell in 2024 after playing elsewhere for a decade, finishing his career with 283 games and scoring 60 goals across his two spells at St Mary's. Lallana wrote on Instagram: 'As I call time on my playing career, I do so with an overwhelming sense of gratitude and pride. 'I could not be more appreciative of the opportunities I've been given and the support I've received along the way. 'You owe so much to so many on a journey like this - it's impossible to name everyone, but to all those please know how grateful I am. I couldn't have done it without you. 'It's crazy to think this all began in the last millennium, when I signed for the academy in 1999. Since making my professional debut in 2006, I realise I've been blessed to live the dream that millions of people share.' Lallana also reflected on each of his clubs including Southampton, where he went on to become captain following the club's return to the Premier League in 2012, and Liverpool, where he made 178 appearances, scoring 22 goals and winning the Champions League and Premier League between 2014 and 2020. He then moved to Brighton, making 104 appearances from 2020 to 2024, before rejoining Saints on a one-year deal. Lallana made his England debut under Roy Hodgson in a Wembley friendly with Chile in November 2013, appeared in all of the first seven internationals of 2014 and was included in England's squad for the World Cup. He also represented England at the 2016 Euros, and scored his first international goal in September 2016.

England have ‘broken down barriers to winning': Gareth Southgate

PAMedia/dpa London Sir Gareth Southgate has said the England team has 'broken down so many barriers to winning' as he received a knighthood for his services to football. The former manager, who led England to consecutive European Championship finals in 2020 and 2024 and the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, accepted the honour from the Prince of Wales at Windsor Castle on Wednesday. He is the fourth England boss to be knighted, after Sir Walter Winterbottom, Sir Alf Ramsey and Sir Bobby Robson, and the only manager to lead the England men's team to two major tournament finals. Southgate said that managing his country for eight years was 'an amazing privilege' but admitted he was 'not missing that either', having resigned from the role following England's 2-1 final defeat to Spain in July last year. Reflecting on his spell in charge, he told the PA news agency, 'We've broken down so many barriers to winning. Ultimately we didn't quite get to where we wanted to, but we're in a great position now to take things forward.' Southgate was succeeded as England manager by Thomas Tuchel ahead of next year's World Cup, when it will be 60 years since the men's national side won their only major honour. Asked how he assessed the squad's chances heading into the tournament, Southgate said: 'What I learned doing the job is it's important that people on the outside respect the space inside, so best that I stay out of the way and let them get on with it. 'They're a brilliant group of players and staff to work with, and I wouldn't be here without everything they contributed and helped me with, so I hope they can go the next step.' Under Southgate, England ended their 55-year wait for a men's final at Euro 2020, delayed 12 months by Covid, before being agonisingly beaten on penalties by Italy at Wembley. A late defeat to Spain three years later again saw the side just miss out on silverware. Southgate took charge of 102 England matches in total to add to the 57 caps he won for the national team as a player between 1995 and 2004. He was recognised for his services to association football in the New Year Honours in December.
