BMW M3 CS Touring Sets Nürburgring Record, Becomes Fastest Wagon Ever

Miami Herald3 days ago
While most automakers are busy inflating crossovers with mood lighting and pretending it's performance, BMW has done something that actually matters. It turned a family wagon into a track-dominating monster. The new BMW M3 CS Touring is now officially the fastest production wagon ever to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife, setting a verified time of 7 minutes 29.5 seconds. To put that in perspective: it's quicker than a Ferrari 599 GTB, within spitting distance of a Porsche Cayman GT4 RS, and yes, it still has room in the back for your dog, golf clubs, or both. The lap was driven by BMW M development ace Jörg Weidinger, who also set the M3 Touring's previous record two years ago. This new CS just wiped the floor with it.
The CS Touring uses the same 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six from the M3 CS sedan, tuned to 543 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. It's mated to an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission and sends power to all four wheels via BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The result? 0–60 mph in 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 180 mph with the optional M Driver's Package. This isn't just a power upgrade. It's a full send. BMW shaved weight with a carbon fiber roof, hood, splitter, diffuser, and optional carbon bucket seats. Throw in semi-slick tires, stiffer adaptive dampers, and a more aggressive stability program, and you've got a wagon that thinks it's a track day hero.
The M3 CS Touring isn't just a Nürburgring trophy hunter. It's the halo product for a performance division that's currently having its best year ever. BMW M sold over 106,000 cars in the first half of 2025, a record-breaking start powered in part by high-performance wagons like this one - as shown in BMW's latest sales report. It also proves BMW hasn't lost its edge. While other car companies chase electric blobs with overstyled faces, BMW is still building sharp, focused, driver-first machines. It's also beating Mercedes in the 2025 U.S. luxury sales race while it's at it - here's how they pulled ahead.Even the design, while familiar in M-car form, nods to the future. The upcoming Neue Klasse platform promises a radical shift, but as this design preview shows, the soul of BMW performance isn't going anywhere.
You can't buy it in the U.S. That's the bad news. BMW says the M3 CS Touring will be Europe-only, which is basically a punch to the gut for American wagon fans. It's expected to cost around $145,000, and production will be extremely limited. So even in Europe, you'll need deep pockets and serious connections.
This is what happens when BMW M is allowed to go all-in. The M3 CS Touring is fast, focused, and properly exciting - and unlike most performance SUVs, it actually deserves to exist. We might not get it in the U.S., but we can at least admire it from afar. Through gritted teeth.

BMW To Slash 2026 IX3 Emissions Using 740kg Of Reused Materials

It will take less than a year of driving for the upcoming 2026 BMW iX3 to wipe out its production CO2 deficit to an equivalent combustion-powered car, the Bavarian automaker claims. BMW has gone all-in on both renewable energy and re-used raw materials to make its all-new iX3 cleaner, faster than any BEV before it, plus the SUV uses 20% less energy to drive than the current car. With an astonishing 740kg of recovered raw materials, fully one third of the iX3 50 xDrive's total mass will be made of pre-used aluminium, thermoplastics and other discarded materials. The result is the cleanest BMW electric vehicle ever made, before it even turns a wheel, with reused secondary materials now used in stressed components for the first time. 'It's a win-win,' BMW's Head of Sustainability Vehicle Projects Juergen Froeschl said. 'We keep plastics and metals out of the seas and landfills, and they take less processing energy to create the raw material,' Froeschl said. 'And these days the quality is comparable to a 100% primary material, at a much lower CO2 cost.' The electric SUV's wheel carriers use a 70% mix of recycled aluminum, and the wheels are up to 80%, giving those parts an 85% reduction in production CO2. The entire interior plastic mix contains material from 140 PET bottles (which can be 100% recycled to automotive-grade material), while 30% of the material mix of the 58-liter 'frunk' is made of recycled fishing nets from the south of France. Built in an all-new, flagship green plant in Drebecen, Hungary that emits just a third of the traditional CO2 to build a car, the iX3 is the first of what BMW calls its 'Neue Klasse' (New Class') of iX3 could have gone even higher and harder on secondary materials mix if the supply could be guaranteed, according to BMW's Head of Sustainability Vehicle Projects Juergen Froeschl. 'If the quality of the secondary material can be guaranteed, you can do it much higher, but it's limited by the availability of the secondary material,' Froeschl said. 'All our engineering stress specifications are untouched. What's changed is the quality of the raw material we can be supplied, so we now use this on stressed parts as well. 'We can now do this with no change to the chemistry. With aluminum, we improved our competence with it so we know what to do to achieve the maximum acceptable limit. 'We did not change the recycling process. We know a very great deal about the benefits and the limits of corrosion and fatigue.' Production upgrades and recycled materials mean the Neue Klasse's sixth-generation cylindrical battery cells emit an astonishing 42% fewer CO2 emissions than the Gen 5 cells in the current iX3. BMW insists that 90% of a BEV's supply-chain CO2 comes from just four sources: the battery cells, aluminium, steel and thermoplastics. But the battery stands out, at 50% of all supply-chain CO2. BMW claims it has pulled a 35% CO2 reduction from its 2700 tier-one suppliers. 'The battery is half the production CO2 cost of the car, and our Neue Klasse battery cells use 42% less carbon per Watt hour than the current iX3,' Froeschl said. 'The materials like lithium, cobalt, nickel are all 50% secondary raw materials, and we use renewable energy to make the anode and cathode, and the Future Sustainable Car Materials Group is working on making it even higher.'The new Debrecen plant delivered BMW a claimed two-thirds reduction in CO2 emissions per car, down to just 0.1 tonnes from production. Designed from the ground up to be a renewable flagship and to minimise reliance on grid energy, it even has BMW's first fully electric paint shop. There's an on-site solar farm providing a third of the plant's total energy requirements, and any excess solar energy is stored in an 1800 cubic-metre thermal-energy unit. The 2026 BMW iX3 isn't just made from reused materials. It's designed to eventually provide them. While the interior contains 140 PET bottles, the recycled-material mix has an unusual limitation: smell. But BMW has found a way around that, and the Econeer seat material uses the same PET-sourced raw material to create the yarn, the glue and the fleece. 'End of life dismantling is easier and more efficient with monomaterial parts. It's the same material for three different things, so this can be recycled 100% and recreated into autograde materials.'

How do the FedEx Cup Playoffs work? What is the format? Who qualifies? What's new in 2025?

The only constant is change, they say. Here in 2025, golfers are facing more change to the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Since its launch in 2007, the PGA Tour's postseason has been through some changes, from format to the number of golfers earning spots. Here's what you need to know about how it all looks now. How many golfers make the FedEx Cup Playoffs? First off, the top 70 in the FedExCup standings at the conclusion of the Wyndham Championship earn spots in the first event of the FedExCup Playoffs, the FedEx St. Jude Championship. That's down from 100 a year ago. From there, the top 50 will advance to the BMW Championship, and then just the top 30 will earn a spot in the Tour Championship. What are the FedEx Cup Playoff tournaments? TPC Southwind, Memphis, Aug. 7-10 Caves Valley Golf Club, Owings Mills, Maryland, Aug. 14-17 East Lake Golf Club, Atlanta, Aug. 21-24 The St. Jude and the BMW each have a $20 million total purse with the winner getting $3.6 million. How has the Tour Championship bonus money changed? The PGA Tour says the "FedEx Cup Bonus Distribution total is $100 million, with the FedEx Cup champion earning $10 million." The money has been reshuffled and spread across a few places. A year ago, Scottie Scheffler banked $25 million for winning the 2024 Tour Championship. The first two events are prize-money payouts but the Tour Championship is considered "bonus" money and doesn't go towards a golfer's official money on the PGA Tour's all-time money list. But it spends just the same. What's changed with the Tour Championship? The Tour Championship will be played as a 72-hole stroke-play event, with all players starting the tournament at even par, just like most Tour events. This is a shift away from the "starting strokes" format (in which the top golfer in the standings started at 10 under, the second-place golfer at 8 under and so on), which was used from 2019-2024. Where to watch the FedEx Cup Playoffs The tag team of NBC Sports, Golf Channel and ESPN+ will have extensive coverage of all three tournaments of the postseason. Who are the past FedEx Cup champions? 2007 - Tiger Woods 2008 - Vijay Singh 2009 - Tiger Woods 2010 - Jim Furyk 2011- Bill Haas 2012 - Brandt Snedeker 2013 - Henrik Stenson 2014 - Billy Horschel 2015 - Jordan Spieth 2016 - Rory McIlroy 2017 - Justin Thomas 2018 - Justin Rose 2019 - Rory McIlroy 2020 - Dustin Johnson 2021 - Patrick Cantlay 2022 - Rory McIlroy 2023 - Viktor Hovland 2024 - Scottie Scheffler What happens to PGA Tour golfers outside the top 70? Those who finish Nos. 71-100 in the standings will have full PGA Tour status for 2026, while players Nos. 101-125 will retain conditional status, although the top 100 and top 125 will not be finalized until after the FedExCup Fall and The RSM Classic in November.

This Glitzy Grille Will Debut on the New GLC EV and Is Inspired by Historic Mercedes-Benz Models

When the Mercedes-Benz GLC-class EV debuts, it will feature the brand's glitzy new grille. The grille has a grid-matrix design that's inspired by historical Mercedes models such as the 1902 Simplex. Along with an illuminated version of the grille that features animations, Mercedes will also offer an unlit alternative. Mercedes-Benz is on the cusp of dawning a new era in its electric vehicle strategy with the upcoming GLC-class EV. To celebrate, the company is walking away from the smooth and rounded design language that it had been using on its EQ models and is digging deep into its history to concoct a new front-end look. The upcoming electric GLC-class SUV will be the first to wear a new grille design that mimics the grid-matrix motif of older Mercedes models dating back to the 1902 Simplex. That car featured a large, upright radiator at the front with so many tiny square inlets to direct air into the cooling system. That square-centric design evolved over the years but remained a part of Mercedes's grille designs into the 1980s and 1990s. For better or worse, the new version features a modern twist. On electric models, the previously functional square inlets have now been replaced by a grid of LED lights. The GLC EV's grille has 942 individual backlit square dots, which can be optioned with an animation feature that greets the driver with a synchronized light show upon hitting the unlock button. The big Mercedes-Benz star logo also lights up, and the whole thing is framed by a separate light-up strip. Too flashy for you? Don't worry, the illuminated version is optional. The unlit version is more subdued, featuring a chrome frame with inset squares rendered in a smoky white glass-like plastic. Furthermore, the metallic grille is available in two shades: Silver Shadow (shown in the image above) and Dark Chrome Optic. Although the new grille design will debut on the GLC EV, which will be unveiled at the Munich IAA auto show in September, expect to see this new motif pop up on future Mercedes models. That should include future gas- and hybrid-powered Benzes too, not just the EVs. We think the new look makes the car more recognizable as a Mercedes-Benz than the jellybean-nosed EQE or EQS models. Here's hoping that resonates with American buyers, who have not taken to the company's previous EV efforts with the same enthusiasm as drivers in other parts of the world.
