Yogi Adityanath backs Kanwar yatris amid vandalism reports: They face media trial

India Today6 hours ago
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday came out strongly in support of Kanwar Yatris, accusing sections of the media and critics of unfairly labelling the pilgrims as 'hooligans' and 'terrorists'."From the lowest class to the highest class, every person is connected to this movement (Kanwar Yatra). It is a wonderful display of unity. There is no discrimination of caste, region, class, religion or community," the Chief Minister while addressing an event in Varanasi.advertisementFurthermore, Adityanath alleged that "the same people" who once tried to divide the country on communal lines are now targeting the Kanwar Yatra to malign India's cultural heritage.
"Kanwariyas are constantly put through media trials. They are labelled as hooligans and even terrorists. This mindset is an insult to India's rich cultural heritage. These are the same people who once tried to separate a particular community from the country, who incited them, and now they are creating fake accounts on social media to stir up caste conflicts," he said. Adityanath's remarks came amid several reports of incidents of violence and vandalism linked to Kanwar yatris this year. Earlier this week, police in Uttarakhand's Haridwar district arrested four Kanwariyas for allegedly blocking the Delhi-Haridwar National Highway and damaging public property near Bahadarabad, news agency PTI reported.Officials said the pilgrims created a ruckus over a "trivial matter" and obstructed traffic by putting up barricades. In another incident in Kanpur, clashes reportedly broke out during a Kanwar Yatra procession, resulting in the assault of a home guard, a security guard, and a student volunteer. Some media reports claimed the violence and subsequent vandalism at a police station were carried out by Kanwariyas. In Muzaffarnagar, a group of Kanwariyas allegedly vandalised a roadside eatery, claiming its Muslim owners had not clearly displayed their identities, according to PTI. Police have also warned pilgrims against riding motorcycles without silencers and have initiated action in some cases.- EndsMust Watch

All Parties On Board For Removing Judge In Cash-At-Home Case: Kiren Rijiju

New Delhi: All parties are on board with the impeachment of Justice Yashwant Varma, from whose house a large amount of cash was found in March, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju told news agency PTI today. He said he is speaking to MPs cutting across party lines to take a unified stand on the matter, and so far it has been heading in the right direction. "Corruption in the judiciary is an extremely sensitive and serious matter because the judiciary is where people get justice. If there is corruption in the judiciary, it is a serious concern for everybody. That is why justice Yashant Varma's removal motion is to be signed by all the political parties. For that I have already coordinated and spoken to all senior leaders of different political parties," the Union minister said. "I will also get in touch with some of the single MP parties because I don't want to leave out any member. So it becomes a unified stand of parliament," he said, and acknowledged the Congress agreeing to support the motion. "I'm happy that they understood the things as they should be because no party can be seen to be standing with or protecting a corrupt judge," Mr Rijiju said. He did not give a timeline by when the motion would be placed in parliament, citing there is a need for all leaders to come on board first. "I can't give a timeline because we are still collecting signatures," he said. For a judge to be removed, the motion has to be signed by not less than 100 MPs in the Lok Sabha and not less than 50 MPs in the Rajya Sabha. After that, a petition has to be submitted to the Chair. "The Chair will inform the house about constituting an inquiry. The requirement of a three-month period needs to be completed as per the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968. After this step, the report will be tabled in parliament and discussions will follow in both houses," Mr Rijiju said. ""The procedure and the rules which are before us show that it will take some time." A fire incident at Justice Varma's Lutyens' Delhi house in March, when he was a judge of the Delhi High Court, had led to the discovery of sacks of half-burnt cash. He was subsequently repatriated to the Allahabad High Court, but no judicial work was assigned to him. An in-house investigation ordered by then Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna indicted him. Though Justice Varma has denied wrongdoing, the inquiry panel concluded the judge and his family members had covert or active control over the storeroom where the case stash was found, making it a case serious enough to seek his removal. On former law minister Kapil Sibal's remarks drawing a parallel between Justice Varma and Justice Shekhar Yadav of the Allahabad High Court over the latter's "controversial" statement, Mr Rijiju said parliament cannot be guided by "one lawyer-MP's personal agenda". "We will not be driven by one lawyer-MP's agenda. We are not here to set an agenda or drive an agenda. We are working purely in the interest of the country," Mr Rijiju said. "He is a very average lawyer... He cannot guide the parliament of India. The parliament will be guided by MPs," the Union Minister said.

Fauja Singh hit-and-run case: 'Driver was not an enemy,' says son; 'could have shown humanity'

NEW DELHI: Late marathoner Fauja Singh's son condemned the driver accused in the hit-and-run case involving his father, criticizing him for showing 'no humanity' by fleeing the scene instead of helping Singh get medical attention. "I have read that he claimed he did not know whom he had hit. However, he was a local and should have known that someone elderly had been struck by his vehicle. Had he not fled the scene and taken my father to the hospital, maybe that could have saved his life," Harvinder Singh told PTI on Friday. "He was not our enemy; he could have approached us and admitted it was him. At least for humanity's sake, he should have come forward. Now, the police have taken action in the matter and the case is in their hands," he added. The final rites for Fauja Singh, renowned as the world's oldest marathoner, will be performed at 12pm on Sunday in his native village of Beas, located in Jalandhar. Gurpreet Singh Dhillon was arrested on Tuesday night and remanded to judicial custody the next day in connection with the hit-and-run case involving Fauja Singh. Police said Dhillon had returned to Punjab just three weeks ago and confirmed his vehicle was seized. Originally from Dasupur in Kartarpur, Dhillon had gone to Canada on a tourist visa and later obtained a work permit valid until 2027. He was apprehended at his residence in Dasupur, which is close to Fauja Singh's village, Beas. Leaders across the political spectrum mourned the passing of the marathoner, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighting his remarkable spirit and lasting influence in motivating Indian youth to embrace fitness. "Fauja Singh Ji was truly remarkable, inspiring India's youth with his unique personality and approach to the vital topic of fitness. He was an outstanding athlete with unwavering determination. His passing has caused great sorrow. My condolences are with his family and his countless admirers around the world," PM Modi said in a post on X.

Fake social media accounts fuelling caste tensions: UP CM Yogi Adityanath

LUCKNOW: While hailing tribal communities as the foundation of Indian civilisation, preservers of Sanatan values, and defenders of the nation for centuries, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday warned against rising attempts to allegedly incite caste conflict through fake social media accounts. Calling for immediate action to stop such divisive agendas, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister said fake social media accounts were being blatantly used by divisive forces to spark caste-based tensions and vitiate the social atmosphere. In his address, the Chief Minister emphasised that tribal society had always been the bedrock of India's Sanatan tradition. He highlighted its enduring role in defending the nation and safeguarding cultural values across eras. Elaborating with references from the Ramayana and other historical events, Yogi said: 'When Lord Rama was in exile and Goddess Sita was abducted, it was the tribal community that stood by him to fight the might of demon king Ravana even in the absence of Ayodhya's army. Similarly, Maharana Pratap reorganised his army in the forests of the Aravalli Range with the support of tribal groups and resisted Emperor Akbar. Chhatrapati Shivaji, too, relied on the Vanvasi (forest dwellers) society to lay the foundation of the Hindavi Swarajya.' The Chief Minister hailed Birsa Munda as a key figure of India's national awakening, asserting that tribal communities have consistently played a vital role in protecting India's spiritual and cultural legacy. 'While we often associate the struggle for independence with recent history, the tribal society has been fighting for Sanatan Dharma through ages.'
