Webb telescope stares deeper into space than ever, revealing warped light from galaxies born near the dawn of time

Malay Mail28-05-2025
PARIS, May 28 — The James Webb space telescope's deepest view of a single target yet depicts spinning arcs of light that are galaxies from the universe's distant past, the European Space Agency said Tuesday.
The new image took the world's most powerful telescope more than 120 hours to capture, making it the longest Webb has ever focused on a single target.
It is also 'Webb's deepest gaze on a single target to date', the European Space Agency (ESA) said in a statement, making the image one of the deepest ever captured of the cosmos.
At the bright centre of the image is a massive cluster of galaxies called Abell S1063, which is 4.5 billion light years from Earth.
But it is not the true target.
Such huge celestial objects can bend the light of things behind them, creating a kind of magnifying glass called a gravitational lens.
Therefore the 'warped arcs' spinning around the Abell S1063 are what really interest scientists, the ESA said in a statement.
Because looking into distant space also means looking back in time, scientists hope to learn how the first galaxies formed during a period known as the Cosmic Dawn, when the universe was only a few million years old.
The image includes nine separate shots of different near-infrared wavelengths of light, the ESA said.
Since coming online in 2022, the Webb telescope has ushered in a new era of scientific breakthroughs.
It has also revealed that galaxies in the early universe are far bigger than scientists expected, leading some to suspect there might be something wrong with our understanding of the cosmos. — AFP

Temu under EU fire for ‘high risk' illegal goods, faces probe under sweeping digital law

BRUSSELS, July 29 — The European Union accused Chinese-founded online shopping giant Temu on Monday of breaking the bloc's digital rules by not 'properly' assessing the risks of illegal products. EU regulators believe Temu is not doing enough to protect European consumers from dangerous products and that it may not be acting sufficiently to mitigate risks to users. 'Evidence showed that there is a high risk for consumers in the EU to encounter illegal products on the platform,' the European Commission said in its preliminary finding. It pointed to a mystery shopping exercise that found consumers were 'very likely to find non-compliant products among the offer, such as baby toys and small electronics'. Temu said only it would 'continue to cooperate fully with the commission'. Wildly popular in the European Union despite only having entered the continent's market in 2023, Temu has 93.7 million average monthly active users in the 27-country bloc. The EU said Temu's October 2024 risk assessment was 'inaccurate and relying on general industry information rather than on specific details about its own marketplace'. Temu is under investigation as part of a mammoth law known as the Digital Services Act (DSA) that forces the world's largest tech firms to do more to protect European consumers online and better police content online. Temu will now be able to respond to the EU regulators' findings and defend itself, but there is no time limit on how long an investigation may last. If confirmed to be in breach, the EU can slap a fine on Temu. Fines under the DSA can go as high as six per cent of a company's total worldwide annual turnover and force it to make changes to address violations. Launched in October, the EU probe continues to investigate other suspected breaches including the use of addictive design features that could hurt users' physical and mental well-being and how Temu's systems recommend content and products. EU law under attack The DSA is part of the EU's reinforced legal weaponry to curb the excesses of Big Tech, with stricter rules for the world's biggest platforms. It has faced criticism from the US administration under President Donald Trump. The Republican-dominated judiciary committee of the US House of Representatives described the DSA in a scathing report as a 'foreign censorship threat' on Friday. Staunch President Donald Trump ally Jim Jordan, committee chair, met EU tech sovereignty chief Henna Virkkunen in Brussels as part of a bipartisan delegation on Monday. 'We had a constructive discussion on how to promote digital innovation, AI and regulate this field smartly,' she said on X after the meeting. There are currently other DSA probes into Chinese online retailer AliExpress, social media platforms Facebook and Instagram and X as well as TikTok. The EU also wants to crack down on cheap packages that flood into the bloc each year, with a proposal under discussion for a two-euro flat fee per parcel. Last year, 4.6 billion such packages entered the EU — more than 145 per second — with 91 per cent originating in China. The EU expects the numbers to increase. — AFP

Global liver cancer cases set to nearly double by 2050 without action, study warns

PARIS, July 29 — The number of people with liver cancer will nearly double worldwide by 2050 unless more is done to address preventable causes such as obesity, alcohol consumption and hepatitis, a study warned today. New cases of liver cancer—the sixth most common form of the disease—will rise to 1.52 million a year from 870,000 if current trends continue, according to data from the Global Cancer Observatory published in the Lancet medical journal. It is also the third deadliest of all cancers, with the study predicting it would take 1.37 million lives by the middle of the century. However three out of five cases of liver cancer could be prevented, the international team of experts said. The risk factors are drinking alcohol, viral hepatitis and a build-up of fat in the liver linked to obesity called MASLD, which was previously known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The viruses that cause hepatitis B and C are expected to remain the leading causes of liver cancer in 2050, according to the study, published on World Hepatitis Day. Vaccination at birth is the best way to prevent hepatitis B, but vaccine coverage remains low in poorer countries including in sub-Saharan Africa, the study said. Unless vaccination rates are increased, hepatitis B is expected to kill 17 million people between 2015 and 2030, it added. Alcohol consumption is estimated to cause more than 21 percent of all cases of liver cancer by 2050, up more than two percentage points from 2022. Cancer due to obesity-linked fat in livers will rise to 11 percent, also up more than two percentage points, the researchers calculated. The large-scale study, which reviewed the available evidence on the subject, underscored 'the urgent need for global action' on liver cancer, the authors said. The experts called for more public awareness about the preventable danger of liver cancer, particularly by warning people with obesity or diabetes about fatty-liver disease in the United States, Europe and Asia.— AFP
