Interior designer reveals the outdated home trend that's not been in fashion since the 80s – and what to swap it for

A DESIGN expert has revealed the one style stuck in an '80s time warp and the easy swap that'll instantly modernise your home. Nate Berkus, interior design guru and star of HGTV, says the once-popular window coverings are officially outdated. 5 5 While they were all the rage in the 1980s and '90s, especially for tall windows and sliding glass doors, he reckons they're making your space look tired. 'Fabric vertical blinds are out,' Nate told The Washington Post. And if you're still clinging to them, you're not alone, they're surprisingly common in UK homes. Drapery panels 5 But if you want your place to feel fresh and modern, he suggests ditching the blinds and swapping them for full-length drapery panels for a more elegant and layered look. Nate says it's all about where you mount them too. Forget curtain rods that sit just above the window frame, that's another no-no. Instead, mount the rod as close to the ceiling as possible to draw the eye upwards and give the illusion of a bigger, brighter room. 'When you walk into a space, you want your eye to go up,' he said on Instagram. 'You don't want your eye to be cut off.' Ripple folds 5 He also recommends choosing curtains with ripple folds or inverted pleats to create a clean, tailored effect. Go for ones that skim the floor, about a quarter inch above, rather than pooling into a messy puddle. My council flat is so stylish thanks to second-hand finds - plus the treasure chest place you need to look for bargains And while you're updating your curtain game, Berkus says simple hardware is best. A sleek rod with rings will keep things looking sharp, and if you're feeling creative, you can even DIY it to save cash. Not only do drapes look more modern than blinds, they can also transform the feel of a room completely. Colour contrast 5 In another Insta post, Nate showed off light ivory floor-to-ceiling curtains against dark panelled walls, saying the contrast instantly brightens up the space. He added that soft, neutral shades like off-white, bone or chalk work best if you're trying to lighten up a dark room without repainting. So if your living room still looks like a scene from a '90s soap, it might be time to give those vertical blinds the boot and bring in something that actually flatters your space. Meanwhile, if you've been waiting to give your home a new refresh then summer is the perfect time to do so. But it's important to make sure that when you update your space, you create a look that won't quickly become outdated. Especially since certain design trends are beginning to fade now that we are halfway into 2025. And with that in mind, interior designers have revealed the colours that are quickly losing their appeal this year. Elsewhere, a TikTok interior design guru has shone the light on the three trends that make your home look 'cheap' and there's an overused flooring you may wish to avoid. The guru, Bilal Rehman, works as a luxury interior designer and according to him, he's seen plenty of clients make the same mistakes over and over again.

Love Island star is ‘sabotaging' rival couple ahead of the final, insist furious fans

A LOVE Island star is 'sabotaging' a rival couple ahead of the finals according to fans. There has been little public divide when it comes to who viewers want to vote out next on the latest series of the ITV2 dating show. 4 4 But now it appears that the Love Islander in question, Dejon, has further fallen out of public favour after his comments about Megan and Conor's relationship on the show last night. Dejon has been coupled with Meg Moore since the start of the series, but dislikes the way Megan Clarke appears to have changed on the show since returning to the villa in a shock twist. Talking to fellow Love Island contestants Meg, 24, and Angel Swift, 26, in the Majorca villa, Dejon, 26, said: 'I was just chatting to Harry and Blu about his whole perception of the Megan and Conor situation, and that the Megan that came in here the first time is completely different to the Megan that's come here now.' From here the ladies chimed in, sharing their opinions on Megan's apparent personality shift. 'She made a comment today about me, about how they've had more girl bombshells [on the show], and she was like yeah well they won't bring any more because Meg would just boot off every time,' said Dejon's other half. 'When it was the Grafties, she'd already seen everything and she didn't come in here once and say to you girls oh by the way, they've been saying this about you,' Dejon added. After Dejon's conversation, Megan and Conor were seen chatting casually about the behaviour they've noticed in the villa and wanting to do their best to be there for each other. 'What I will say as I've seen it a lot in here is that when couples are going good, and it's getting to crunch time now, it's convenient that the boys come up with a problem for me and a problem for you to make you act out of character and to make me act out of character and to turn us against each other,' said Conor. Fans have been quick to spot the slights aimed at Megan and Conor's relationship, claiming that Dejon is doing all he can to sabotage them as he feels threatened by the rival couple. One fan said: 'Dejon is just straight up sabotaging other couples now?!' Doing everything to get the heat off themselves, it's actually so applaudable', followed by laughing face emojis. Even before last night's drama, viewers have been keen to see Dejon leave the show after showing little effort to romance Meg. 'Luke T did an entire treasure hunt for Siannise. Dejon does the bare minimum and she eats it up!', one fan remarked online. Though the demands for Dejon to exit the show sooner rather than later began after it was revealed another villa couple had been secretly dumped from the Island. 4 4

The best Shein wedding dresses for brides on a budget – including gorgeous satin-look number for £23

YOUR wedding should be the happiest time of your life - but discovering the true cost of those Instagram-perfect wedding gowns can put a dampener on things. Instead of forking out thousands for a designer option, many brides are finding the dress of their dreams on Shein for a fraction of the price. Take bride-to-be Sophie Cook for example, she found a stunning dress from the Chinese retailer for just £40. And another lucky lady spotted a jaw-dropping dress being priced at a cool £13.77, thanks to a 66 per cent discount at the fast fashion giant. So why couldn't this be me? As a bride-to-be, I decided to see if I could be so lucky and reached for my laptop for a bit of online shopping. On average, brides in the UK spend between £1,300 and £1,500 on their wedding dress, with some designers even charging upwards of £10,000 for their gowns. Considering I'm going to wear mine for a matter of hours, I challenged myself to see what I could find for under the £150 mark. Here are some of the best options I found… Elitara Elegant Luxurious Beige Off-Shoulder Elastic Knitted Ruched Mermaid Hem Dress - £30.99 12 12 The first dress I tried was this off-the-shoulder gown with a gorgeous sweetheart neckline and a fun train. And the best part of it is that is only cost £30.99. With proper steam, it could be taken to the next level and I was hugely impressed with how good of a deal it was. Belle Satin Strapless Maxi Dress With Adjustable Cross-Back Tie, Wedding Guest Dress - £23.49 BUY FROM SHEIN If you are looking for your princess moment, this is it. I was so excited to try this strapless gown, which had a flattering basque waistline. The dress colour looked whiter on the website, although it was listed as "apricot", and I was surprised just how goldeny/creamy it was when it arrived. If you added an underskirt, I think it could be taken to the next level - but for £23.49, it could be the bargain of the century. Lace Trailing Wedding Dress - £86.99 12 12 My wedding dress dreams have always been influenced by one unforgettable look: Kate Middleton's iconic bridal lace gown. Of course, I'm not working with a £250,000Alexander McQueen budget — but luckily, Shein came through with a seriously impressive alternative. Their £86 version caught my eye, and once I tried it on, I was genuinely impressed. The dress featured beautiful lace sleeves and a flattering, structured fit that made me feel both graceful and totally at ease. For a price tag that's over 2,900 times less than Kate's, this felt like a major win. EVER-PRETTY Romantic Deep V-Neck See-Through Floral Sequin Short Sleeves Wedding Dress - £40.49 12 BUY FROM SHEIN If you are a boho bride, this dress could be for you. I instantly felt comfortable in this tulle gown, which was so pretty and flattering and only cost just over £40. I felt like I could sweep round it all day long, and immediately decided to keep it for my wardrobe. Elitara Elegant White Tube Long Flare Sleeve Round Neck Backless Rhinestone Decor Mermaid Wedding Dress - £33.53 12 BUY FROM SHEIN This dress looked promising on the website but was my least favourite of the bunch when it arrived - despite me loving the front neck buckle. I think it was a 'me problem' though and just didn't fit me right or perhaps was the wrong size as the front was super baggy. However, on a different body I think this dress would look more elegant. Wedding makeup do's and dont's Paige Williams, Founder & CEO of the iconic makeup brand shared her tips. DO: Go timeless over trendy We all love a trend babe, but for your wedding day? Let's keep it classic. Think soft glam, radiant skin, neutral tones with a pop of sparkle - You want to look back in ten years and still be obsessed with your glam. Classic never goes out of style. DON'T: Try something totally new Your wedding day is not the time to switch it up with neon liner or completely new brows babe. You want to feel like you, just the most elevated, glowing version. Stick to what you know makes you feel confident and gorgeous. DO: Prioritise long-wear formulas Your wedding is a marathon, not a sprint. You're not just walking down the aisle, you're dancing, hugging, crying, and posing all day long. You need makeup that's in it for the long haul. Go for waterproof, transfer-proof & cry-proof products. Your face needs to slay from 'I do' to the last dance and be able to handle those happy tears. DON'T: Overload your base Babes, less is more. You want coverage, not cake. Go for that breathable, buildable base that lets your real skin glow through. You're aiming for flawless, not flat. Trust me, your photos will thank you. DO: Book a trial Non-negotiable. Whether you're DIY-ing your glam or booking a MUA, a trial is your makeup dress rehearsal. Test it in daylight, take selfies, wear it for hours. It's the only way to know it'll hit just right on the day. DON'T: Forget your neck & chest Don't stop the glam at your jawline, babe. Blend that foundation, bronzer and glow down to your neck and chest, we're going for seamless, snatched and sculpted from every angle. You're the main event, let it show.
