‘There's no stress': gamers go offline in retro console revival

The Guardian15-02-2025
Nestled between an original Donkey Kong arcade machine, a mint condition OutRun racing simulation game and booths wired up with GameCubes and Nintendo 64s, the engineer Luke Malpass works away dismantling a broken Nintendo Wii.
There has been a steady stream of people bringing in their old game consoles for repairs or modifications, on the house, to Four Quarters, a retro games arcade in Elephant and Castle, which has been transformed into a games clinic for two days.
Gabriella Rosenau, 35, brought in her broken Wii that had been in the garage 'for years'. 'I still play my brother's old Nintendo 64 and I love it, but I'd really love to get [the Wii] fixed.'
'I've done the odd bit of Call of Duty and the PlayStation stuff, but I have more of an interest in the retro games,' she adds.
Rosenau is part of a growing community who are ditching contemporary video games and picking up the consoles from their childhood, or even before their time. And gen Z gamers are following suit, with 24% owning a retro console, according to research by Pringles.
What started as a passion project for Malpass, restoring consoles to their former glory, quickly evolved into a full-time business. At its peak during lockdown, his company RetroSix employed 16 people to cope with demand. He puts this down – in part – to people being stuck at home. 'People were bored, finding things at home and searching for things online.
'We originally were just selling on eBay, we didn't even have a site, and eBay were limiting our sales because they thought it was fraudulent,' he says. 'It literally took over.'
RetroSix still gets hundreds of requests each month from people hoping to get their consoles fully working and playable, or upgraded. This has 'stabilised', Malpass says, though the community is still expanding.
'There's a whole variety of people who are into this now. The older-than-me generation, so sort of late 40s, early 50s, who tend to be PC-based with Amigas and Commodores. Then my age, so people in their 30s, who are very much into the Game Boys, the Mega Drives, Super Nintendo Entertainment Systems, things like that.
'And then there's a younger generation that are either into [the] Nintendo DS, things they played with that are starting to become retro, or they're just really obsessed with retro as a whole. So you do get people in their 20s that are more obsessed than we are, even though they didn't grow up with it,' he says.
Malpass has amassed a large following on social media and has 61,700 subscribers on his YouTube channel, AngelSix, and 44,100 followers on RetroSix's TikTok, where he shares videos about repairs and his inventions with the community.
The young people who engage online say they are reaching for retro games because of the distinctive gameplay, and for the chance to 'switch off', Malpass says.
'You turn your console on at the top, you're gaming. There's no stress, there's no internet, you're not competing against the world. You've got yourself in a game, you feel a sense of achievement as you're going and that was originally what you used to do,' he says.
'I think younger generations have got a lot more stress now, growing up in the social media world is mentally very challenging. [Retro video gaming] is their safe place. It's like their escape,' he says.
Matthew Dolan, a software developer in his 40s, brought along parts of his Game Gear console. His passion for retro gaming and technology stems from nostalgia and childhood memories playing games his father had written for him on the BBC Micro. 'It was a great introduction to technology,' he says.
'You get all that joy from just literally playing it. Going through batteries, planning your long car journeys out based on how long they'll last,' he says. 'They're not relying on flashy graphics in the same way [as contemporary games].'
Going one step further, Dolan now fixes and adapts consoles himself, and says he spent £7,000 on the hobby last year. 'I got some of that back, from selling things on, but it's not cheap.'
He got stuck trying to repair some of the chips on his Game Gear and needed Malpass's expertise. A repaired Prestige Edition Game Gear console from RetroSix costs £298.80. The LED edition costs £334.80 and mods or servicing on the console start at £36.

Donkey Kong Bananza fan breaks game by painting the cartridge yellow

An overly enthusastic Donkey Kong fan has almost ruined their Nintendo Switch 2 by spray painting one of their game cartridges banana yellow. Donkey Kong Bananza is a great game and it's been a very long time since there was another big budget Donkey Kong title, so some fans, with a lot of nostalgia for the franchise, have got a bit carried away with themselves. One major point of conversation has been the game's placement in the wider Donkey Kong timeline or rather how it seems to contradict it entirely. We're not going to get into that again here, but some fans are oddly annoyed by the lack of consistency… even though the series has never had in-depth storylines. Another even stranger trend has been trying to paint the cartridge the game comes on yellow, like the Donkey Kong 64 one. That's not a very good idea though, as one fan in particular has discovered. The fan in question is one gardnerhartung, or merely Gardner, on TikTok who recently shared a video expressing disappointment that the physical game cartridge for Donkey Kong Bananza is the usual red colour, like other Switch 2 cartridges. His reasoning is that, back in the day, a couple of Donkey Kong games received unique yellow cartridges when they came out, specifically 1995's Donkey Kong Land for the Game Boy and 1996's Donkey Kong 64 for the Nintendo 64. It was a fun novelty, but it really was only those two games. Yet Gardner, in his own words, was 'displeased' with Bananza not following suit and filmed himself disassembling the cartridge so he can paint it yellow without damaging the game and its connection pins. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. The final result is admittedly authentic looking, but it ultimately proved fruitless since the cartridge would no longer fit into the console, either due to the extra layers of paint making it slightly bigger or it wasn't put back together properly. In a follow-up video, Gardner showed he was able to force the cartridge in eventually and, from the sound of things, actually play the game. But the cartridge is now stuck, and he can't remove it, with one attempt with a pair of metal pliers only breaking part of it off. While some of the comments do try to offer advice on how to remove the cartridge, there are unsurprisingly a lot of people mocking Gardner for even attempting any of this to begin with. The videos have gone viral enough to generate at least three separate Reddit threads, where plenty of people either insult Gardner or accuse him of just trying to draw attention. Whatever the case, Gardner appears to be taking has fame well. In a third video, where it seems he's about to address the mean comments and media coverage, he reveals he was sent a threatening email from Nintendo. Signed by 'John Nintendo himself', it says unless Gardner gets the cartridge removed by the end of the day, the company will take his house and brick his Switch 2 (admittedly, that second one is something Nintendo can actually do). He then shows that a second attempt at using the pliers was successful and has presumably left his Switch 2 undamaged, but the cartridge itself is in pieces. If there's any lesson to be learned from this, it's don't spray paint your games, especially with how expensive they are nowadays, although you'd think most people would know not to do that. More Trending In other Donkey Kong news, although Nintendo hasn't shared official sales figures yet, data by NielsenIQ and shared by The Game Business says Donkey Kong Bananza enjoyed the biggest opening week in the UK in the franchise's history… maybe. As it stands, 2010's Donkey Kong Country Returns (the original Wii game, not the Switch remaster) officially holds that record, but NielsenIQ admits it currently lacks data for how many copies of Bananza were sold directly from Nintendo's online store and the eShop. Even if Bananza has outperformed every other Donkey Kong game in the UK, that doesn't really mean much as the series has never done tremendously well over here. Although Donkey Kong Country helped the SNES to beat the Mega Drive (aka Genesis) in the US, during the 90s, it didn't have quite the same effect here, where it wasn't until the DS and Wii era when Nintendo really became popular in the UK. You're not required to unlock a specific number of Banandium Gems from each layer to advance, so feel free to race through the game and Teeleport between layers to boost your stats. So don't gauge your progress based on the layer you're on – and certainly don't assume there are only ten layers as some players have already discovered. There are plenty of Donkey Kong Bananza layers to explore, each offering different climates and opportunities to find those crucial Banandium Gems. So roll up your sleeves and start digging.

We bought a bus off eBay and transformed it into our dream home... but living on the road has its downsides

A couple who bought a 20-year-old school bus off of eBay and transformed it into their dream home so they could travel the world full-time has lifted a lid on the ups and downs to their nomadic lifestyle. Shaquita Riley, 28, from Lincolnton, North Carolina, and Scott Heltz, 55, from New Orleans, Louisiana, bonded over their shared love of travel when they met in 2019. They quickly started dating, and six months later, they decided to purchase an old bus and convert it into a mobile home so they could set out and see the world together. 'I always loved traveling and dreamed of living in a bus. Scott knew he wanted to travel so it was a natural step,' Shaq explained during an exclusive chat with the Daily Mail. They bought the bus off eBay in June 2020 for $2,950, and they soon got to work on fixing it up. But turning a old rusty bus into a livable home wasn't easy, and the renovations took 'three long years' and cost them another $40,000. They took out the entire roof and raised it by 16 inches before replacing the entire interior. It now has a full kitchen with a stove, oven, microwave, and running water, a living room area with a big couch and flat screen TV, a bathroom with a toilet and shower, a bedroom with a queen bed, and a storage space in the back. Shaquita Riley, 28, and Scott Heltz, 55, bought a 20-year-old school bus off of eBay and paid $40,000 to transform it into their dream home so they travel the world full-time They bought the bus off eBay in June 2020 for $2,950, and they soon got to work on fixing it up. The renovations took 'three long years' and cost them another $40,000 They also added large RV windows, solar panels, multiple 200 gallon water tanks, and a Starlink satellite. In 2023, the couple, along with their two dogs and two cats, sold their home, quit their jobs, and 'officially hit the road.' They have now explored eight states, usually camping in state and national parks. 'We can stay off grid indefinitely or until we run out of water,' Shaq shared. But Shaq, who was going to school online for social psychology, confessed that living on the road and constantly moving around 'has its challenges.' 'For example, we did not have internet service in a lot of places and I had school and homework to do,' she explained. 'There are also challenges to parking a 40-foot bus in the city. Not to mention it's a magnet for thieves and law enforcement.' She also confessed that they sometimes 'fight,' adding, 'Things are not a fairytale. I like things a certain way while Scott's a bit "oh look a squirrel" kinda guy. It now has a sprawling full kitchen (left) with a stove, oven, microwave, and running water, and a living room area (right) with a big couch and flat screen TV The bathroom, seen here, has a toilet and shower There's also a bedroom with a queen bed (seen) and a storage space in the back 'Not to mention there are times we both need to use the toilet!' But she vowed that the space doesn't feel 'cramped' and that the upsides far outweigh the downsides. 'We have built our home entirely how we want it. 'Everything has a specific place and purpose,' she added. 'We get to see the world and travel. We have met some lifelong friends and have seen some incredible sights.' However, one of the hardest parts has been lack of income, since they both left their professions to live on the road, and they recently realized that their lifestyle is not practical for ever. So after two years of moving around they've decided it may be time for something more stable. In 2023, the couple, along with their two dogs and two cats, sold their home, quit their jobs, and 'officially hit the road' But Shaq, who was going to school online for social psychology, confessed that living on the road and constantly moving around 'has its challenges' After two years of moving around they've decided it may be time for something more stable, and the couple recently purchased 20 acres of land in southern Arizona They recently purchased 20 acres of land in southern Arizona and plan to soon buy a giant shipping container to transform into a permanent home. They want to get some farm animals and use solar power and a well so they can be 'self-sufficient' like they are on the bus. Shaq now works as a care coordinator in the mental health field after finishing her bachelors and is about to start her masters in psychology, while Scott is an independent contractor and RV technician. And Shaq vowed that they still plan on using the bus to travel in their free time. 'We intend to build our own homestead on [the land],' shared Shaq. 'We want to be self-sufficient and not rely on traditional means of living. But we still plan on traveling and enjoying life together.'
