St Johnstone make key changes to Simo Valakari's staff

He joins assistant manager, Andy Kirk, in heading for the exit door this summer.
It is expected that Valakari will appoint fresh faces to his staff, as Saints aim to rebuild and reshape the first team squad ahead of their tilt at next season's Scottish Championship title following relegation from the top-flight last month.
A club statement reads: "The club can confirm that there will be a restructuring of the football department as we look ahead to the 2025/26 season.
"Assistant manager Andy Kirk and first team coach Alex Cleland both depart. We thank them greatly for all of their contributions.
"Andy arrived at McDiarmid Park as assistant to Craig Levein in November 2023 and, during his time with us, also took on the role of interim manager.
"He operated with professionalism throughout, and we wish him all the very best for the future.
"Alex joined in the summer of 2009 to work alongside Derek McInnes and Tony Docherty for our return to top-flight football.
"While managers moved on through the years, Alex remained a constant. He played his part in us winning three pieces of major silverware – the Scottish Cup in 2014 and 2021, as well as the League Cup in 2021.
"Alex was also first team coach throughout numerous top six finishes and memorable European adventures, including advancing beyond both Rosenborg and FC Luzern.
"He stepped into the role of interim manager on more than one occasion and always went about his business with the utmost professionalism.
"Not just a positive influence on first team senior squad members, Alex has also helped shape the careers of countless young footballers who transitioned through our academy.
"Again, we thank Alex for his major contribution to St Johnstone Football Club and wish him the very best for the future.
"We will provide supporters with a further update in due course."

Six transfer necessities Rangers must execute with crunch Champions League deadline staring them in the face

Some big deals are required before the blockbuster clash with Panathinaikos next week It's now rapidly becoming a race against the clock for Rangers to bring in new faces this summer. The Champions League clash with Panathinaikos is just around the corner as Russell Martin looks to steer the Light Blues' to Europe's elite competition. ‌ A £40million league phase jackpot awaits in the league phase should the Scottish Premiership side navigate some tricky qualifying tests - with the Greek side first on the agenda. ‌ It has been a packed transfer window so far for the Glasgow giants with Djeidi Gassama's arrival from Sheffield Wednesday on Monday following Max Aarons, Joe Rothwell, Emmanuel Fernandez, Thelo Aasgaard and Nasser Djiga. But there are still plenty more deals to be done with the deadline for submitting the squad to UEFA for the Champions League qualifier by Thursday evening. So, what positions do Rangers need to strengthen in, and who do they need to get? Record Sport takes a look. Goalkeeper - Carl Rushworth or a similar profile Rangers have been linked Brighton keeper Carl Rushworth with Martin keen on a reunion with the former Swansea shot-stopper. And the boss hasn't been shy in admitting he wants to add competition for Jack Butland after the England cap endured a tough campaign last season. But it has to fit the bill, a keeper who can distribute with his feet and fill in as the auxiliary sweeper that Martin craves. Butland and Liam Kelly cannot offer the Ibrox boss that. Left-back - Owen Beck, Ishe Samuels-Smith Jefte is the first-choice left-back as the new season approaches - but Russell Martin appears to be keen to add competition with Ridvan Yilmaz facing an uncertain future. Rangers have shown interest in Liverpool's Owen Beck from Liverpool while they are among the clubs interested in taking Ishe Samuels-Smith on loan from Chelsea. ‌ Centre-back - Conor Coady Conor Coady 's move to Glasgow from Leicester City is quickly turning into a transfer saga as the Ibrox faithful wait on his arrival. ‌ The centre-back made a pre-season friendly appearance for the Foxes in their win over OH Leuven last weekend with talks ongoing - but Martin will know he is in need of experienced defensive reinforcements for the crucial European qualifier. We understand the holdup over this one is at Leicester's end with new boss Marti Cifuentes yet to be announced, but the Ibrox side will be keen to have it wrapped up sooner rather than later. ‌ While Djeidi Gassama is now in the building, it has always appeared that Russell Martin and sporting director Kevin Thelwell were keen to add at least one additional wide man following the Sheffield Wednesday transfer. Rangers are chasing a deal for Crystal Palace winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi - who spent last season on loan at Sheffield United - but face a battle with Wolves for a deal. Maccabi Tel Aviv star Weslley Patati is also on the agenda despite the Israeli club standing firm on a £10million valuation - while Como's Samuel Ballet is open to a move. ‌ to do amid admits Hull City's current financial plight. Striker - Luuk de Jong, Dor Turgeman With Hamza Igamane on Lille's shopping list and last season's top scorer Cyriel Dessers pushing for a move to AEK Athens two more strikers could be required urgently. Dor Turgeman is on the shopping list with the cash from the two striker sales set to fund his arrival from Maccabi Tel Aviv after Record Sport first revealed the frontman was on the Ibrox shortlist. Free agent Luuk de Jong has been linked with a switch in the Netherlands with his future still up in the air despite returning to pre-season training with the Eredivise champions.

Tuesday's briefing: Levi Colwill does not want to stop at world domination

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill is confident the Club World Cup winners will make a major impact at home and in Europe as they look forward to the new season. England's Women are still very much in the think of the action as they prepare for their Euro 2025 showdown with Sweden. Meanwhile, 39-year-old Luka Modric has a new club after deciding to extend his illustrious career further. The Blues are back Levi Colwill insists Chelsea's Club World Cup win was no fluke and the Premier League and Champions League are now in their sights. The Blues defied the odds to beat Paris St Germain 3-0 at the MetLife Stadium on Sunday evening and lift the Club World Cup, providing further evidence of their revival following a difficult few years at Stamford Bridge in the wake of the Todd Boehly-led takeover in 2022. Defender Colwill said: 'Everyone was rooting for PSG or saying they were going to beat us but it's not an upset because we know how good we are. If other people don't believe that, then hopefully we have changed their minds now. 'I said at the start of this tournament that our plan was to win it and people looked at me as if I was crazy! So I'm going to say the exact same thing now going into the Premier League and Champions League. I think we're ready and we'll see next season.' Williamson taking nothing for granted Leah Williamson is refusing to play down the threat posed by quarter-final opponents Sweden to England's hopes of retaining their European crown. The Lionesses booked Thursday night's Euro 2025 last-eight showdown with the Swedes, who they beat 4-0 in the semi-finals on their way to lifting the title three years ago, with a 6-1 Group D victory over Wales, and captain Williams is not under-estimating the danger they represent. She said: 'Sweden are a fantastic team. They're relentless in the way they go about their game. 'They sort of avoid the expectation of every tournament and nobody really talks about them, (which is) slightly disrespectful, I think, because they always show up and they always seem to pose a threat to most teams, and normally come out with a medal or (become) a semi-final team, so, yes, they are a strong team (and) we're looking forward to the fixture.' Luka who's joined AC Milan La Scala del Calcio has a new maestro 🎻 #WelcomeModrić — AC Milan (@acmilan) July 14, 2025 AC Milan have completed the signing of Croatia captain Luka Modric following his departure from Real Madrid. The 39-year-old former Dinamo Zagreb and Tottenham midfielder has put pen to paper on a one-year contract at the San Siro with the option of an extension for a further 12 months. Modric had a trophy-laden 13-year stint at the Bernabeu, during which he claimed four LaLiga titles, six Champions League crowns and five Club World Cups. He won the Ballon d'Or in 2018 and has made a record 188 appearances for his national team. What's on today? England continue their preparations for Thursday night's Euro 2025 quarter-final clash with Sweden in Zurich. Elsewhere, Welsh champions The New Saints are in action in the second leg of their Champions League first qualifying round tie against Shkendija in North Macedonia, while there are 15 group stage fixtures in Scotland's Premier Sports Cup.
