Body of missing man found in freezer in Tripura; his girlfriend's cousin among 6 arrested: police

Indian Express11-06-2025
Six people were arrested on Wednesday after the body of a man was found in a suitcase stored in a freezer in Tripura's Dhalai district, nearly three days after he went missing from Agartala. The arrested accused include a cousin of a girl the man, Shariful Islam, was in love with, police said.
'We arrested six persons, Dr Dibakar Saha, 28, his father Dipak Saha, 52, mother Debika Saha, 40, Nabanita Das, 25, Joydeep Das, 20, Animesh Yadav, 21. A love triangle was the reason behind the murder. Shariful was having an affair with a girl. Dibakar, a cousin of the girl, was also in love with her. We found messages of love exchanged from their mobile phones,' said Kiran Kumar, Superintendent of Police, Tripura West.
Shariful, 24, was engaged in the Smart City project as an electrician.
The police said that Dibakar had invited Shariful to Joydeep's house in South Indranagar on June 8 to give him some gifts. When Shariful went there, Dibakar allegedly strangled him in the presence of Joydeep, Animesh and Nabamita. He then allegedly stuffed Shariful's body into the suitcase by tying the hands.
Dibakar took the suitcase to Gandacherra and stored it inside an ice cream fridge at his father's shop on June 9, the police said, adding that he had bought the suitcase two days before the murder.
A missing-person complaint was lodged at the New Capital Complex police station on June 9 by Shariful's family.

Police to expand CCTV cover in Nashik city to 768 cams

This expanded network aims to greatly improve crime detection and deter criminal activity. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The installation of these cameras has been strategically distributed across various key areas of the city. For instance, 100 cameras have been placed in Satpur, Ambad, and Indiranagar areas. Sarkarwada now has 32 cameras, while Chunchale is covered by 52 cameras. As many as 156 cameras have been deployed across Nashik Road, Upnagar, Deolali Camp, Panchavati, and Adgaon areas. Currently, another 84 cameras are in the process of being installed in the Bhadrakali area, further expanding the reach of the surveillance network. This comprehensive surveillance will expand even more with the help of the Smart City project. As part of this initiative, 1,300 additional CCTV cameras have already been installed at 350 different locations. These cameras are soon expected to become fully functional, integrating with the police's existing and planned network. The combined effort will provide extensive and robust security coverage across the entire city of Nashik, enhancing public safety significantly. A police officer, while talking to TOI, said, "With the exception of cameras in the Bhadrakali area, where plans are afoot for live transmission to the Bhadrakali police station, other cameras will be standalone with the capacity to store the footage for about a month. " The officer added, "Thus, the police can check the footage of the cameras as and when required. While investigating a crime, the police generally take help of CCTV cameras to check from where the criminals may have arrived and in which direction they left after committing a crime." Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The city police are getting the cameras installed from various companies using their Corporation Social Responsibility (CSR) funds. Under the guidance of CP Sandeep Karnik, the police are also appealing to the citizens, shopkeepers, and other traders to install cameras that capture the area in front of their respective establishments.

Emergency Call Boxes installed across Agra for quick crisis response

If you're in distress or facing any problem in the City of Taj, look for an Emergency Call Box—an initiative under the Smart City project. The idea is to offer immediate assistance through a simple press of the 'Help' button, which connects you directly to the integrated command and control centre of Agra Smart City. The system instantly tracks your location and facilitates support by notifying the concerned agency. A total of 43 'Emergency Call Boxes' have been installed across the city by Agra Nagar Nigam (ANN). (For representation only) A total of 43 'Emergency Call Boxes' have been installed across the city by Agra Nagar Nigam (ANN). 'The idea is to provide immediate assistance not just to locals but also to the tourists visiting Agra. The integrated command and control system alerts the concerned agency—be it the police, traffic police, health services, ambulance, or fire department,' said Ankit Khandelwal, municipal commissioner, Agra. 'There was scope of improvement when these Emergency Call Boxes were initially installed, and they have now become increasingly beneficial for users. The number of these boxes might be increased—particularly in areas vulnerable in terms of women's safety, at tourism hotspots, and near schools and colleges—depending on their utility,' said Khandelwal. 'We are committed to enhancing the technological infrastructure envisioned under the Smart City project—not only to strengthen administrative support but also to ensure the safety and security of residents and tourists visiting the city,' he added. Recently, a resident of Nirbhay Nagar on Mau road in Agra used the Emergency Call Box facility when he was being assaulted and harassed by his sons. Upon receiving the alert, the police were immediately informed and provided timely assistance. In another instance, a man stuck in a traffic jam on Collectorate road pressed the 'Help' button, prompting a quick response from the traffic police. In a separate incident, a couple involved in a domestic dispute were pacified by police who reached the spot after an alert citizen reported the issue to using the facility. Even in the case of a dead body found in a remote location, a local resident used the facility to inform authorities, ensuring swift action. Officials at Nagar Nigam plan to introduce a multilingual feature to the system, which currently operates through location tracking and CCTV integration. The entire mechanism is monitored live by the integrated command and control centre located at the Smart City project hub within the Nagar Nigam premises.
