Council vows to boost tourism in Sibu
SIBU (July 27): The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has reaffirmed its long-term commitment to boosting the domestic tourism sector through the organisation of large-scale events such as the Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF), which recorded its 20th edition this year.
SMC chairman Clarence Ting hailed the recently-concluded festival as not only a platform to celebrate Sarawak's cultural diversity, but also a key driver in attracting visitors to Sibu.
'We believe domestic tourism is the backbone of local economic development, and BCF is a clear testament to our continuous effort to showcase Borneo's cultural uniqueness to visitors nationwide,' he said when officiating at the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) Sibu Fair 2025 here yesterday.
Although not as prominent as regional-level events such as the Kuching Food Festival, Ting said the response to this year's BCF was encouraging, with a notable increase in income for local traders.
'This event not only draws tourists but also creates opportunities for small entrepreneurs and cultural performers to grow,' he added.
Commenting on the Matta Sibu Fair 2025, Ting welcomed the strong participation from travel agencies and industry players, which he said reflected confidence in Sarawak's, particularly Sibu's, tourism potential.
'Although the regional economy is slowing down, platforms like the Matta Fair can breathe new life into the local tourism sector.
'It also opens up opportunities for investments and collaborations among industry players.'
Meanwhile, Matta Sibu Fair organising committee chairman Patrick Ling said this year's edition featured 32 exhibition booths, covering both domestic and international destinations.
'We are offering a variety of holiday packages, from nature-based destinations to unique cultural experiences.
'Our goal is to rekindle public interest in travelling while supporting the nation's tourism economy,' he added.

Sept 15 holiday good for hotels and F&B but could impact SME productivity, say Sabah business leaders
KOTA KINABALU: The casual holiday declared for Sept 15, providing a four-day weekend for this year's Malaysia Day celebrations, will benefit local hotel operators, says Sabah MATTA chairman Lawrence Chin. "For local tourism, this holiday could see more rooms sold as well as an increase in food and beverage (F&B) sales," he said Wednesday (July 23), commenting on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's declaration of the eve of Malaysia Day as a holiday this year. However, he said Sabah already has too many holidays. "This will result in an ineffective workforce for the employers since we already have a holiday on Malaysia Day, Sept 16," he added. Plastics Manufacturers Association, Sabah Branch (MPMA Sabah) chairman Liaw Hen Kong said the holiday would increase costs for the industrial sector, especially small and medium industries. "It has an impact on the efficiency and productivity of the SMEs, especially for factories running around the clock," he said. Liaw added that it would help if the private sector were consulted when planning such ungazetted holidays. Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KKCCI) president Datuk Michael Lui, however, said that although there are already many holidays, "another day wouldn't hurt." "I think... businesses can take a break, and catch up," he said. However, he said too many holidays could make the workforce lazy. Lui said that overall, Wednesday's announcements by the Prime Minister would benefit the people, especially the reduction of RON 95 petrol prices to RM1.99 per litre. This would reduce the burden on the people, he added. He said the special RM100 Sara aid for Malaysians should be opened up to more stores instead of specific supermarkets. "It will help spread the business among more outlets," he added.

MATTA to launch training programs for tour vehicle operators
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) is in the final stages of developing Safety and Defensive Driving Courses for drivers of tourism vehicles. According to its president, Nigel Wong, the training programmes would equip drivers with skills to operate vehicles safely and professionally. It would also educate operators on best practices in vehicle maintenance, road safety and productivity. 'MATTA is also exploring the development of other relevant programmes. Emergency response and crisis management modules would help drivers respond appropriately during unforeseen events such as accidents, vehicle breakdowns, or natural disasters, while familiarisation training on tourism routes would enable drivers to navigate key destinations efficiently and enhance the overall tour experience,' Wong said in a statement on Tuesday (July 22). MATTA also welcomed the Transport Ministry's recent clarification on the suspension of Public Service Vehicle (PSV) licences. Following a request by the association, the Ministry confirmed on July 13 that suspensions would apply strictly to drivers involved in serious or repeated offences, not those with minor or compoundable violations. 'This clear distinction ensures that enforcement is proportionate and fair,' said Wong. The Ministry also stated that drivers found guilty of road offences would undergo a mandatory rehabilitation course (Kursus Pemulihan Wajib), implemented via the Road Transport Department (JPJ), for holders of both PSV and Goods Driving Licence (GDL).
