Garrett Nussmeier Heisman Betting Analysis
The fifth-year senior -- who backed up Max Johnson in 2021 and Jayden Daniels in 2022 and 2023 -- has an NFL frame (6-foot-2, 200 pounds) and 744 career pass attempts under his belt, including a 4,000-yard season in 2024.
That -- plus his pedigree as the son of former Saints QB and current New Orleans offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier -- helps explain why he enters the 2025 season one of the top three favorites to be taken No. 1 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft.
As of July 22, Nussmeier is +425 to be the No. 1 pick in next year's draft, just behind Manning at +225 and Allar at +275.
But the question we're tackling today is whether he offers value at his current odds to become LSU's second Heisman winner in the last three years after Daniels in 2023.

Nussmeier and the Tigers had their ups and downs last fall.
LSU was ranked as high as No. 8 in late October, but then endured a three-game losing streak en route to a 9-4 (5-3 SEC) finish.
Nussmeier's ceiling was on display late in LSU's home upset of Ole Miss in October and in the final three games of the year. He completed over 70 percent of his passes in each of his team's wins over Vanderbilt, Oklahoma and Baylor.
But Nussmeier struggled during the three-game skid that put a damper on an otherwise strong year.
He completed just 50 percent of his 50 passes and was intercepted three times in a 38-23 loss to Texas A&M on Oct. 26.
Two weeks later, following a Nov. 2 bye, Nussmeier threw two more picks in a blowout home loss to Alabama on Nov. 9.
He also went just 27-for-47 for 260 yards and 1 TD, while being sacked seven times, as LSU lost 27-16 to Florida on Nov. 16.

LSU's schedule a year ago only featured three teams -- No. 11 Ole Miss, No. 17 Alabama and No. 19 South Carolina -- that finished the year in the AP Top 25.

Nussmeier and the Tigers proved against South Carolina and Oklahoma that they could put up big numbers against quality defenses. And they also deserve credit for coming through in the clutch vs. Ole Miss to salvage an otherwise ugly night.
Still, given his struggles against Ole Miss, Alabama, Texas A&M and Florida last year, there's good reason to wonder what kind of numbers Nussmeier will be able to post against another brutal schedule in 2025.
This year, LSU has another tough season opener on the road at Clemson. Dabo Swinney's team is currently a 3-point favorite in that matchup.
In case you haven't heard, LSU is looking to start the year 1-0 for the first time in four seasons under coach Brian Kelly after losing to FSU in 2022 and 2023 and USC last year.
LSU will also once again face Florida (home, Sept. 13), Ole Miss (away, Sept. 27), South Carolina (home, Oct. 11), Texas A&M (home, Oct. 25), Alabama (away, Nov. 8) and Oklahoma (away, Nov. 29).

On an LSU offense replacing four starting linemen who are now in the NFL (including No. 4 overall pick Will Campbell) plus top tight end Mason Taylor and WR Kyren Lacy, I just don't see Nussmeier putting up Heisman-worthy numbers.
Let's consider the glass-half-full take on Nussmeier and Co. for a second, though. The best-case scenario for the offense as a whole starts with the running game taking a step forward after then-freshman Caden Durham battled injuries a year ago.
And -- as usual -- LSU will also have plenty of talent at WR.
With leading receiver Aaron Anderson returning and Barion Brown (Kentucky), Nic Anderson (Oklahoma) and tight end Bauer Sharp (also from OU) providing a boost via the transfer portal, the Tigers will hardly lack for playmakers.
I think the young LSU offensive line will experience some growing pains, though. The inexperience up front will make it hard for this offense to move the ball at times, starting on Aug. 30 vs. a Clemson D-line featuring projected 2026 first-rounders TJ Parker and Peter Woods.
Unless the Tigers' unproven front five dramatically exceeds expectations, I would pencil in Nussmeier for similar numbers to last year's (plenty good enough for All-SEC contention, but not quite All-American or Heisman contention).
It also doesn't help Nussmeier's Heisman case -- especially at shorter than 10-to-1 odds -- that he's at risk of being overshadowed by fellow SEC QB Heisman contenders Arch Manning at Texas and LaNorris Sellers at South Carolina.

Nebraska offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen met with the media following the team's practice on Thursday afternoon. The biggest story of the day was the loss of tight end Mac Markway for the second season in a row with an ACL injury. 'My day one meeting with the guys was like, we've done a lot of football up to this point this year with our winter OTAs and summer and spring football OTAs and now going into camp. This is like the fourth time we've really installed it. Some guys were here in the spring, some guys didn't get here until the summer. Individually, it might be their second time or it may be their fourth time. We should really have a pretty good understanding of what to do, but it's still installation. It's still installation. There's a lot of technique stuff." The offensive coordinator detailed his frustration at simple mistakes even on day one. "I get irritated when guys don't know how to line up or they don't know their assignment. That really irritates me because we have installed it four times. At this point, it should be more about proper technique and making good decisions and starting to work on situations and then putting guys in the position to be able to make plays. It varies from player to player. The overall aspect of it is just trying to figure out what the best lineup is and what we do best.' Holgorsen talks about the offense's goals for the 2025 season. 'One of our goals as an offense is to become a little bit more explosive,' he said. 'Explosive bodies, I think that'll naturally happen. But that's not what we're going to obsess over. We're not going to be reckless with our play calls just to try to get explosive plays. That will come. Situationally, that will come." He also discussed the importance of including routine plays on your call sheet. "Where that really shows up and where your yards per play go up is just routine play after routine play after routine play. If it's a checkdown for five yards, that's better than an incompletion. That's better than a sack. We're just focused on routine plays, taking what the defense gives you. If you do that consistently, those routine plays turn into big plays with good players. I think we have good players that can turn routine plays into big plays, and that will help your yards per play and that will help your explosive plays as well.' He expressed his excitement at the progress made during the offseason. 'I don't care what I've done, where I've been, teams I've had,' he said. 'It's always been about this and what we have to do to make this the best team that we possibly can. I just look at it right now and I'm happy with the depth. We have 17 healthy bodies at o-line. We get a third group out there and rep those guys." Holgorsen detailed the current depth of the offense. "It doesn't look very good, but they're getting a bunch of reps. That's what young offensive line guys need is just reps and development. They need to eat and get in the weight room. We'll worry about those guys here in a couple years. For the now and for the next practice, we've got 10 good bodies that are all practicing hard and that gives us an opportunity to coach them and gives them an opportunity to develop.' Cam Ward isn't sugarcoating the state of the Titans' offense. 'I just think we're very mid right now,' the rookie quarterback told reporters after Wednesday's training camp practice. 'From my position, to up front, to the receiver position, but, at the end of the day, it all starts with me.' Cowboys to work out La'el Collins for possible return to team amid rash of OL injuries
Reinforcements may be coming to the Cowboys offensive line, and this one is a very familiar face. La'el Collins, who started 71 games for the team from 2015 through 2021, will workout for Dallas coaches in Oxnard on Friday as the team looks to add depth following a rash of training camp injuries along the front five. Collins, about to turn 33 in July, has reportedly spent the offseason training with Duke Manyweather and OL Masterminds in case there would be an opportunity somewhere for him in 2025. That opportunity could come from the team that signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2015. Once assumed to be a surefire top-10 draft pick coming out of LSU, Collins saw his stock plummet when it was revealed that state police wanted to talk to him about the shooting death of a pregnant woman with whom he had had a relationship. Though Collins was never considered a suspect, he was passed over by every team in every round of the draft. Jerry Jones then famously invited him to a dinner with several Cowboys notables and signed him to the team shortly thereafter. He was starting by Week 7. Collins went on to make 77 game appearances (playoffs included) over six seasons before being released in 2022 with three years left on his contract. The 6-foot-4-inch 315-pounder then signed with the Bengals and played in 15 games before suffering an ACL tear. Cincinnati released him early in the 2023 season. The Cowboys brought Collins back to their practice squad in January 2024 as an insurance piece, but he didn't see the field before the team was eliminated in a wild-card loss to the Packers. Collins signed with Buffalo last April but was released during final roster cuts. He sat out the 2024 season. Though it's been nearly 1,000 days since Collins last played in an NFL game, the Cowboys are not in a position to be terribly choosy about where experienced O-line help is coming from. Last year's first-round draft pick Tyler Guyton will miss four to six weeks with a bone fracture and sprained knee suffered in practice earlier this week. That news came on top of an ankle concern for starter Terence Steele and a neck injury to Rob Jones. Also this week, Hakeem Adeniji went out with a concussion, and Matt Waletzko was announced to have an ankle issue of his own. And then on Thursday, former first-rounder and two-time Pro Bowler Tyler Smith left practice with knee soreness. Collins's ability to play either guard or tackle- as well as his familiarity with many of the Cowboys players, especially close friend Dak Prescott- could help him acclimate quickly if Friday's scheduled workout goes well. His presence at the team's training camp facility has already made waves. "I saw [him] back there. It was a very joyous reunion. LC is a guy that I love,' Prescott told reporters Thursday. 'Hopefully, he kills this workout.' Despite his lengthy layoff, Collins is confident. "I'm going to protect your daddy," he reportedly told Prescott's daughters.
