Tourist's three panicked words as woman has legs severed by boat propeller
Hannah Smith, 22, was left with serious injures and rushed to a nearby hospital after her legs were sliced by a boat propeller during her graduation celebration getaway
Tourists yelled three panicked words as a woman's legs were severed by a boat propeller after she fell into the water.
Gifted university graduate Hannah Smith, 22, had been celebrating her recent graduation from Alabama's Miles College when she was sucked into a boat propeller that cut both of her legs off. Her family has claimed Hannah fell from the side of a pontoon boat as it was docking when she was dragged below the water by the propeller. Hannah, from Memphis , Tennessee, booked a luxury Caribbean cruise via the Carnival Sunrise ship and had been on their way back from an excursion to Pearl Island - a tropical island getaway - in the Bahamas when she reportedly fell into the water at Nassau Cruise Port at 3:55pm on the day of the incident.
Panicked passengers cried "she's jumped off" when Hannah ended up in the water. The ferry captain then turned the engine off and saw Hannah in the water surrounded by a pool of blood.
A shocked witness told police two female passengers grabbed Hannah by the arm and pulled her back onto the boat. She was then taken to a hospital with "serious" injuries to her legs and lower body and that they had been partially severed.
Hannah was then flown to back to the US on Wednesday where she has undergone further surgeries. There had been claims that alcohol was somehow involved in the incident, but Hannah's mum Tracy Smith furiously hit back at the claims, adding: "Hannah was not intoxicated. She fell from the boat. It's hurtful to say she jumped because she did not."
Tracy also quizzed why police did not interview Hannah's friend Brooklyn Pitre, who had witnessed the incident. She added: "These kids work their a**** off to graduate. It was a celebratory trip.
"Do they have fun? Yes. Were they drunk? No. Did she jump? No. Are we completely aware of what happened? No."
She continued: "But could there have been a safety mechanism that was off, was the boat rocking, we are not 100 per cent sure of that. There are so many things that could have been happening. I want to know the truth. This was a young woman, happy, celebrating her life and now she's fighting for it."
Hannah's dad, Marvin, said he had spoken to a doctor who treated Hannah at Doctor's Hospital in Nassau. He added everything "suggested she was coherent" and "not inebriated" when she arrived.
In a GoFundMe appeal set up by the family, Hannah's sister Rachel revealed a tragic update. She added: "Hannah suffered a few setbacks. She had to undergo additional transfusions of blood, platelets, and dialysis.
"Before she was taken into her scheduled surgery, she momentarily came out of her sedation. She was able to acknowledge our presence and encouraging words with head nods and squeezing our hands. She has underwent her fifth surgery. Please continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers."
Following the incident, well wishes and prayers were shared on social media. "Sending our deepest prayers and support to recent graduate Hannah Smith, Summa Cum Laude Class of 2025, who is currently in critical condition in Nassau, Bahamas," Miles College said in a May 13 Facebook post. "

Our Brit daughter, 15, was killed by boat propeller while snorkelling in Maldives…we're forced to investigate ourselves
Jenna was allegedly beckoned into the water while guides tracked a pod of dolphins FAMILY'S PAIN Our Brit daughter, 15, was killed by boat propeller while snorkelling in Maldives…we're forced to investigate ourselves Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) DEVASTATED parents say they have been forced to investigate the death of their British daughter themselves after being refused support from officials. Jenna Chan, 15, was tragically killed by a boat propeller while on a school trip snorkelling in the Maldives. 2 Jenna Chan, 15, died in the horror snorkelling accident Credit: Collect 2 Her parents say they have been forced to investigate the cause of her death themselves Credit: GoFundMe British-Singaporean dual national Jenna was a student at St Joseph's International Institution and had been assisting the British registered charity, the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme (MWSRP), in its research expedition. On November 8, the school girl was allegedly beckoned into the water but within minutes was "sucked under" when the engine was switched on. Her parents, Alan and Jennifer Chan, have said that more than a month after the tragic incident they are "still waiting for answers" and have "been forced to become their own investigators". As a state, the Maldives does not provide post-mortem examinations so the couple are hunting for information about their daughter's death "completely" on their own. Jennifer told The Times: 'We just want to know why Jenna died. There is no justice and we are completely on our own.' Alan flew out to the island in March to get hold of the hospital CT scans that were used by police to determine a possible cause of death. Jennifer, a surgeon, examined the pictures with her colleagues who she said were horrified "because Jenna's injuries were so horrific". The couple said they haven't even been allowed to speak to any of the teachers who were on board the boat at the time of the incident. They believe there was "no real investigation" into the accident, adding that there was a "chain of errors" throughout the excursion, they claim. According to some of the students, Jenna was reportedly instructed to enter the water while the guides tracked dolphins. At least six dead & two missing after boat capsizes on Lake Tahoe during terrifying storm causing '10-foot waves' The teenager was then allegedly "sucked up" by the engine before reportedly being brought to the nearest hotel instead of hospital. Michael Johnston, CEO of St Joseph's International Institution , previously wrote to the parents informing them that efforts to piece together what had happened to Jenna were being impeded by MWSRP. According to the school's boss, the company was "refusing" to provide access to their staff and crew for interviews. "We remain exasperated at their lack of co-operation," he said. There has been silence from the Maldivian government and all news about her has ceased Jenna's sister, Alice Chan Jenna's 17-year-old sister Alice has started a GoFundMe to raise awareness of the teen's accident and help with legal fees while the family fight for answers. The caption for the fundraiser reads: "My sister, 15 year old British-Singaporean Jenna Chan, was killed in a propeller accident during a school trip in the Maldives. "There has been silence from the Maldivian government and all news about her has ceased. "The circumstances leading to her sudden death and negligence of the company is truly shocking to our family and her teenage friends, who witnessed her death. "Please help support us during this tough time for our family and loved ones, and spread the word about her case. "All donations will go towards our fight for Jenna and protection of all future children and tourists, by providing our Maldivian lawyers with the legal fees and financial support to take more cases just like this one." We just want to know why Jenna died. There is no justice and we are completely on our own Jenna's mum, Jennifer Chan So far, £6,595 of its £10,000 has been raised. Jenna was laid to rest on November 15 in Singapore. A spokesperson for the young girl's school said that it had been "unrelenting" in its efforts to find out what happened and is still waiting on a report from the Maldivian authorities. In a statement, the school said: 'The school has been unrelenting in our efforts to piece together a full account of what happened. "The Maldivian authorities investigation is still ongoing and we have yet to receive their report. "The Maldivian authorities and MWSRP have not given us access to interview the boat captain and crew nor the MWSRP staff. These are critical pieces for all of us. 'I can confirm that the Maldives Police Service was in Singapore and with the support of the Singapore Police Force facilitated interviews with witnesses on May 27 and 28, 2025. "We continue to actively support the investigation. We have not and will not stop seeking answers and supporting those involved.' The MWSRP said: 'At the time of the incident, Ms Chan was under the supervision of two teaching staff from SJII and an experienced boat crew. "The emergency response was in accordance with our procedures and Ms Chan was taken directly to a local health centre.'

Rugby player stabbed 10 times in front of girlfriend 'half an inch' from death
A rugby player was left just "half an inch" from death after he was stabbed 10 times in front of his girlfriend during a night out. Morgan Hopkins, 19, from Swansea, remains in hospital as he recovers from a 10-and-a-half hour operation after his ordeal. Morgan, who also goes by "Hoppy" with his Morriston RFC teammates, was attacked while the pair waited for a taxi in Gorseinon on Saturday. Morgan's family said he was stabbed 10 times with a surgeon commenting he was just half an inch away from having a wound deep enough that would have caused him to bleed to death. He has suffered life-changing injuries in the attack and has had part of his bowel removed and had tendons sewn back together. His mum, Victoria Owens Hopkins, said June 22 was the worst day of her life. She added: "In the early hours of Sunday morning my son and his girlfriend were sitting on a bench waiting for a lift home when Morgan was attacked with a knife. "He was stabbed 10 times. At first we thought they were superficial so we were all very relaxed. But that turned into 10.5 hours of Morgan having major surgery, where he had part of his bowel removed. He has had to have nerves and tendons sewn back in his arms." She added: "Half an inch saved his life. So in all this we consider ourselves very lucky." The family confirmed Morgan's surgeon said it would be a week to learn if the operation was successful, although Morgan has since been moved into intensive care and remains in a stable condition. South Wales Police has arrested and charged a 20-year-old man for attempted murder as well as being in possession of a bladed article, WalesOnline reported. A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: "An investigation is ongoing in relation to a serious assault which occurred during the early hours of the morning on Sunday June 22, 2025, at The New Lodge Social Club, Alexandra Road, Gorseinon. "The victim remains in hospital in a stable condition. Twenty-year-old Kane Evans from Gorseinon has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article." Morriston RFC has set up a fundraiser in a bid to cover any medical costs from private rehabilitation services when he is released from hospital and not feel pressure about returning to work. A spokesperson for the rugby club said: "Not only does Morgan have physical wounds from this attack, but he will suffer from psychological trauma for years to come. "The purpose of this GoFundMe page is to raise money for Morgan as he's going to be out of work for some time. "We'd also like to raise some money for Morgan to be able to have some private sessions for physical and mental rehabilitation should he wish to have this. "Our thoughts go out to Morgan and his family during this difficult time and wish him a speedy recovery. See you on the rugby pitch again soon Hoppy." The GoFundMe campaign raised more than £3,000 in less than 24 hours. To view the campaign, click here.

Rugby player 'half an inch' from death after being stabbed 10 times on night out
A rugby player narrowly escaped death after being stabbed 10 times during a night out with his girlfriend. Morgan Hopkins, a 19 year old from Swansea, is currently in hospital recuperating from a gruelling 10.5-hour operation following the horrific incident. Known as "Hoppy" among his friends and Morriston RFC teammates, Morgan was assaulted while waiting for a taxi after a night out in Gorseinon on Saturday with his girlfriend. The attack has left Morgan with serious, life-altering injuries. He underwent extensive surgery where doctors had to remove part of his bowel and stitch his tendons back together. Victoria Owens Hopkins, Morgan's mother, referred to June 22 as "the worst day of [her] life.", reports Wales Online.
