The Stara day ago
KOTA KINABALU: Sustainable ventures and initiatives to help youth from poor families generate income were among this year's Shell LiveWire Malaysia (Sabah) Challenge winners.
The winners - Crates Studio, Live2Learn Ideas, Nella Odella, Rafa F&B Enterprise and WAIG Consultancy Sdn Bhd - were the best of 60 entries, and each brought home RM10,000 in startup grants and a year of business coaching to refine their business plans.
This gives them an opportunity to transform into successful ventures, gain access to the global LiveWire network where they can share their insights with entrepreneurs worldwide, while standing a chance to participate in the annual Shell Global Top 10 Innovators Awards.
Prior to winning, participants had signed up with the challenge and began their journey with an intensive bootcamp aimed at sharpening entrepreneurial skills.
From there, 10 finalists were shortlisted to compete in the final pitching round, where they presented comprehensive business plans and showcased their commitment to innovation and growth.
After a thorough evaluation, five enterprises that stood out were selected as this year's winners.
Crates Studio is a creative collective officially established in 2023, founded by a team of designers with a strong interest in art, culture, innovation, and community-focused storytelling.
Live2Learn Ideas is a creative and sustainable art initiative where unique upcycled art pieces are designed with a touch of Sabahan ethnic motifs.
They give new life to discarded materials by transforming them into meaningful, high-value creations.
Nella Odella, meanwhile upcycles discarded denim into handmade fashion pieces featuring Sabah cultural motfis. This is done with an aim to reduce textile waste, preserve local heritage, and empower communities through fair wages, skill development, and eco-conscious designs.
Rafa F&B Enterprise empowers B40 and underserved youth in Sabah through a street burger micro-franchise model providing training, full stall packages, and cooperative support to transform young lives into sustainable, locally driven businesses with dignity and purpose.
WAIG Consultancy provides hydraulic and coastal modelling, along with hydrographic surveys and measurements. They promote sustainable design and help clients achieve practical and eco-friendly solutions.
Sabah Shell Petroleum Company Ltd (SSPC) general manager Wong Kim Mun said what stood out most in the LiveWire programme was how Sabahan entrepreneurs used their skills and innovation to create real change towards strengthening their communities.
He said their initiatives helped open up new pathways for employment and growth.
'LiveWire is more than just a business platform; it's a catalyst for community-driven progress, connecting entrepreneurs to a global network and empowering them to contribute meaningfully to the nation's socio-economic development," he said.
Wong said since LiveWire was introduced in Sabah in 2015, a total of 720 participants have been trained with over 50 local entrepreneurs in various fields given additional support to go further.
Speaking of the top five winners during this event, he said they are amazing people with deep passion and belief.
'This is what it means to be an entrepreneur. Bring spark to their life and those in society, with products and services that address challenges within the community,' he said.
Shell LiveWire is the flagship enterprise development programme of Shell. The programme strengthens local economies across the globe by promoting entrepreneurship and developing entrepreneurs.
This programme, which kickstarted in Sabah in 2015, in Sarawak in 2016, and in Peninsular Malaysia in 2022, aims to inspire young entrepreneurs to innovate and produce real business solutions that meet today's socio-economic needs.

Analysts see EV to continue to gain momentum in Malaysia

The EV segment remains a bright spot, up 58.5 per cent year-on-year for the year-to-date (January to May) and 69.3 per cent year-on-year in May, with 4,152 units registered. 06 Jul 2025 04:03pm Local brand Proton is on track to begin local assembly of the 7 at its new Tanjung Malim EV plant by year-end, while Perodua is preparing to launch its first EV (a B-segment hatchback) in the fourth quarter of 2025. MIDF Research said in a report on Wednesday that electrification continues to gain momentum in Malaysia. Although overall total industry volume (TIV) is softening, government data as of May showed that the EV segment remains a bright spot, up 58.5 per cent year-on-year for the year-to-date (January to May) and 69.3 per cent year-on-year in May, with 4,152 units registered. It noted that local brand Proton is on track to begin local assembly of the 7 at its new Tanjung Malim EV plant by year-end, while Perodua is preparing to launch its first EV (a B-segment hatchback) in the fourth quarter of 2025. It also noted that EV charging infrastructure is expanding, with over 4,000 chargers now installed, though still short of the 10,000-unit year-end target. EV charging infrastructure is expanding, with over 4,000 chargers now installed, though still short of the 10,000-unit year-end target. Currently, consumers have access to more than 40 EV models, reflecting a rapidly expanding portfolio. TA Securities said that Chinese automakers such as BYD, Chery, Xpeng, and Geely continue to expand their footprint by offering feature-rich models at competitive prices. At the same time, premium brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche are stepping up efforts to introduce their electric lineups, aiming to capture early ground in the luxury EV segment. Overall, the research house sees that the second-half automotive sales may see a temporary boost, particularly in EVs, as consumers look to secure current tax exemptions before they expire at the end of December 2025. This pull-forward demand could benefit brands with competitive EV offerings. However, it concurred that uncertainties surrounding the potential introduction of EV road tax may lead some buyers to hold off. It opined that the removal of the RM100,000 (US$23,767) price floor for imported EVs, which is also set to end in December 2025, is expected to attract more low-cost foreign models, intensifying price competition and squeezing margins. "While a short-term uplift is possible, the broader outlook remains cautious due to policy risks, affordability concerns, and heightened market competition," said the research house. Maybank Investment Bank also said in its recent report that EV-related investments began gaining traction in the first half of 2025 in Malaysia as the current exemptions on import and excise duties for completely knocked down (CBU) EVs, as well as restrictions on importing CBU EVs priced below RM100,000, are set to expire at end-2025. The research house opined that this momentum is expected to continue into the second half. - BERNAMA-XINHUA More Like This

Crowds flock to final day of Star Education Fair in JB

JOHOR BARU: The Star Education Fair continued to draw crowds on its second day as visitors explored study options and scholarship opportunities. Organised by Star Media Group, the two-day fair features 40 institutions occupying over 55 booths, offering a wide range of programmes and consultations. Netherlands Maritime University College business development and corporate communications executive Nur Alissa Mae said visitors from Indonesia and Singapore also came to her booth during the fair here. "Most enquiries this time were from postgraduate prospects, particularly those interested in the Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme. 'Perhaps because the education fair is held alongside a job fair, many diploma and degree holders came to explore postgraduate options. "They're looking at the MBA as a way to support their career growth or transition to a different company,' she added. Universiti Tenaga Nasional (Uniten) Computing and Informatics senior lecturer Dr Lim Kok Cheng said that among the courses that attracted the most attention during the fair was its newly introduced Master's in Artificial Intelligence. 'We've also launched a Master's in Computer Science majoring in AI, and both programmes started their intake this year. 'These are among the most talked-about programmes throughout the two-day fair,' he added. Dr Lim said visitors, especially working professionals and tech-savvy students, were intrigued by the AI offerings and asked detailed questions about the course structure and career prospects. Management and Science University (MSU) academic councillor and lecturer Adly Zaihardi Muhamad Said said the university received strong interest from both working adults and fresh graduates during the fair. 'The response has been encouraging. Many working adults looking to further their studies dropped by to enquire about postgraduate options, especially master's and PhD programmes,' he said when met at the fair at the Persada International Convention Centre here. He said MSU offers over 140 programmes, with more than 20 at the postgraduate level, including those delivered in a blended format that combines monthly physical classes with online learning. Lincoln University College marketing executive P. Harshinni said the institution offers over 160 programmes ranging from foundation to PhD levels. She added that the university's Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme is currently one of the most popular, especially among working adults. 'We're offering the full MBA course at RM10,000, which can be completed within one to two years via online distance learning. "The offer is valid until the end of this year,' she said. Akademi Laut Malaysia (Alam) business and management faculty head Dr A. Ramesh Babu said the academy received a fair number of enquiries from visitors interested in maritime-related careers. 'Alam offers seven diploma programmes tailored for both seafaring and shore-based careers. "Students who are keen to work on board ships can opt for diplomas in Marine Engineering, Nautical Studies or Marine Electro-Technology, while those interested in shore-based roles can choose from Maritime Business Administration, Maritime Management, Maritime Services, or Maritime Transportation and Logistics. 'We also offer more than 100 short courses tailored for the marine industry, ranging from five days to six months,' he said. Ramesh said demand for these short courses has increased, with the Diploma in Maritime Transportation and Logistics and Diploma in Maritime Management being the most sought-after. Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) programme promotion division assistant manager Chin Kok Keong said the university offers a wide range of programmes, from foundation to postgraduate studies. 'We have courses in medical studies, engineering, IT, arts and social sciences. There's a good balance across faculties, and each programme has its own unique teaching style,' he said. He added that UTAR offers achievement-based scholarships to eligible SPM and STPM school-leavers. 'Our university is also one of the most affordable, and our graduates have a marketability rate of between 95% and 97%,' he said. Universiti Malaya marketing centre assistant registrar Mohd Hazyq Askyel Mohd Fuad said most visitors to their booth were interested in the university's foundation and undergraduate programmes. 'Most enquiries were about our foundation and bachelor's degree programmes. "We're hoping for a larger crowd as the foundation application deadline is closing in about a week,' he said. He added that Universiti Malaya offers on-the-spot offer letters and direct intake, which many students were not aware of prior to the fair. 'We managed to issue several immediate offer letters today, and it was a pleasant surprise for many visitors,' he said. The fair, which is being till Sunday (July 6), runs between 11am and 6pm at the Persada International Convention Centre here. The Star Education Fair, now in its 38th year, is one of the country's pioneer education exhibitions. For more details on the Star Education Fair, visit or email edufair@

YAPIEM allocates RM13.5 mln to upgrade homes for asnaf families

PASIR PUTEH: Close to 300 underprivileged families in Malaysia have seen their housing conditions improve thanks to a RM13.5 million allocation by the Malaysian Islamic Economic Development Foundation (YAPIEM) between 2020 and May this year. The funding, managed through the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), has facilitated the construction and repair of 293 homes for asnaf (those eligible for zakat assistance). This effort is part of a broader national push to enhance living standards for vulnerable communities. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar shared that the initiative includes 167 home repairs and 126 new builds, with 199 projects completed and 94 still underway. 'This initiative is made possible through generous public contributions to the YAPIEM Trust Fund, which are channelled directly to those in need,' he said during the Sinar Lestari and Sinar Kasih Housing Programme handover ceremony in Kampung Merkang. The programme is a collaborative effort involving the Kelantan Federal Development Office (PPPNK) and the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) under the Prime Minister's Department. YAPIEM, established in 1976, is among 14 agencies under the Religious Affairs portfolio. At the event, four recipients under the eKasih Kelantan programme were handed keys to newly built homes, each valued at RM80,000, totalling RM320,000. One beneficiary, Nor Liza Hassan, 51, had waited 14 years for a home. She now cares full-time for her husband, Mohd Ridzuan Nawi, 52, who has been bedridden since 2011 after a fall. 'This is truly a meaningful blessing. I've been applying for housing aid for over a decade,' she said. Nor Liza supports two children, aged 17 and 18, one still in school while the other attends Kelantan Matriculation College in Kok Lanas. The family relies on monthly aid from the Social Welfare Department and PERKESO, as her husband previously worked as a school security guard. To supplement their income, she sells herbal products online and works as a seasonal food vendor during Ramadan, with plans to open a small food stall when possible. Single mother Nik Shazrina Nik Mohd Zulkiflee also received assistance—a RM9,600 Sinar Kasih grant—after her husband died in a road accident last year. The aid aims to ease her financial burden following the loss of the family's sole breadwinner.
