Hyderabad agriculture university issues clarification after tree cutting allegations
A section of students alleged that earthmovers were deployed on Saturday night to fell trees on campus in preparation for Vana Mahotsavam, a plantation programme scheduled by launched by the Chief Minister on Monday.
Videos of students questioning police officials and pointing to the presence of heavy machinery were shared on social media. The students questioned the removal of existing trees to plant new ones.
The university authorities, however, termed the reports on social media as "false" and "misleading".
PJTAU Vice-Chancellor Prof Aldas Janaiah clarified removal of subabul and eucalyptus trees in 150 acres as part of the greenery development initiative on the campus was taken up by the university through a formal auction process, awarded to ITC.
He said in a statement that these tree species have been found to harm the environment by depleting groundwater and damaging soil health. He clarified that the removal of these trees is part of a programme that has been ongoing for the past month, and appealed to people and environmentalists not to believe the false news on social media.
In May, the university had approved the auctioning of 521 eucalyptus and 3,000 subabul trees present on four different blocks on the campus.
As part of the university's ongoing greenery development efforts, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has initiated a project to remove environmentally harmful tree species such as subabul and eucalyptus from the university campus. These trees, planted decades ago, were found to be contributing to groundwater depletion and land degradation.
The Vice-Chancellor stated that in the place of these trees, rare and traditional forest species native to Telangana will be introduced on a large scale.
He clarified that the initiative is based on ecological reasoning and long-term sustainability goals. He noted that the university's Botanical Garden, once a key feature of the campus, had been in decline for over 15 years due to the uncontrolled growth of subabul and eucalyptus.
He also mentioned that the campus is filled with invasive weeds like lantana, parthenium, prosophis juliflora (Sarkar thumma), etc, causing severe environmental damage to the campus.
In the coming days, eucalyptus and subabul trees on 150 acres will be removed to make space for planting valuable varieties as part of the Vana Mahotsavam.
Around 30 native timber, wild fruit and wild flower bearing tree species, along with a wide variety of Bamboo varieties, are being planted to revive and rejuvenate the Botanical Garden.
The Vana Mahotsavam, organised by the Forest Department, will be attended by students, volunteers, forest enthusiasts, and the local community, the Vice-Chancellor added.

High-level delegation to Delhi to seek cooperation of national political parties in passage of BC quota enhancement Bill
As the Central government is yet to give its consent for enhancing reservations to Backward Classes to 42%, the State government has decided to lead a delegation to meet various political parties at the national level seeking their cooperation in speedy passage of the Bill passed by the Telangana legislature. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has decided to lead a delegation comprising Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Ministers and others to meet leaders of all political parties during the ongoing session of the Parliament. 'We are confident that the Bill will receive the Centre's consent,' Mr. Bhatti Vikramarka said. He said the government had conducted the social, economic, education, employment, political and caste survey in a scientific and transparent manner and this survey had become a role model for the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi who was initially reluctant about the caste survey had agreed to include caste enumeration in the next census operations. 'Telangana's survey has become a reference point for the Central government as well as for States that intend to conduct a similar survey,' he said. The Deputy Chief Minister recalled that the Bill passed by the State Legislature was sent to the Union Home Ministry and President's office for their consent. In the meantime, it was decided to lead a high-level delegation to the national capital to meet the heads of all political parties and explain them about the salient features of the Bill envisaging 42% reservation to BC community in line with their population. The delegation will meet Opposition leader in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and his counterpart in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and submit the details of the survey, including the empirical data collected during the survey. The survey had been a great success owing to the methodology with which it was conducted starting with meetings of stakeholders at different levels. 'There were doubts in the minds of people when the legislature passed a resolution urging the Centre to conduct caste survey across the country. But the Telangana model has inspired the Central government to include caste component in the next census operations,' he said. This was followed by verification of the data by independent group of experts which validated the data after a rigorous exercise. Based on the data, the government had drafted an ordinance providing 42% reservation to BC communities and it was awaiting the assent of Governor Jishnu Dev Varma. 'The expert group's report will be made public after the Cabinet ratifies it and the legislature approves it,' he said in reply to a query. To a question on BRS' charge that the survey was aimed at hoodwinking the BCs, he said: 'There is no need to strictly follow the established procedure if that has been the case. But we have followed the methodology that has now become a role model for the country,' he said. Reply to BJP president's notice Mr. Bhatti Vikramarka made light of the legal notice served on him by BJP state president N. Ramachander Rao claiming that he stood by whatever he had said. 'His (Mr. Ramachander Rao's) role in the Hyderabad Central University incident is known. I am not afraid of legal notices. I will reply to the notice when the time comes,' he averred.

I&PR Minister laments that govt. could not effectively communicate spree of welfare schemes to the people
Revenue and Information & Public Relations Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy has lamented that the State government could not take the spree of welfare and developmental programmes introduced and implemented since the Congress took over the reins effectively to the people. The BRS indulged in hoodwinking the people through false propaganda during its 10-year rule and was continuing the same as the main Opposition party in the State. 'Our government is unable to explain to the people about the host of welfare schemes launched in the interests of poor and lower classes,' he said. The Minister made the remarks during a video conference with the district public relations officers on Tuesday. He recalled how the Indiramma government headed by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy took several initiatives to fulfil the promises ahead of the previous elections as well as schemes that did not find a mention in the party's election manifesto, but was not able to communicate the achievements effectively to the people. In addition to a slew of welfare schemes like free bus travel to women, LPG cylinder at subsidised price of ₹500, farm loan waiver, Rythu Bharosa and others, the government successfully filled 60,000 vacancies in different departments making Telangana the first State to make such massive recruitments. 'Unlike the previous government which mislead the people through Goebbels' propaganda in its 10-year rule, the Congress government implemented spree of welfare schemes in one-and-a-half years of its rule,' he said. He cited the distribution of new ration cards to seven lakh families in addition to including names of 15 lakh members in ration cards. The Bhu Bharati Act was enacted to mitigate the hardships faced by farmers in securing rights on their lands. The government had implemented these schemes in spite of the financial constraints it faced ever since it took over the reins. Mr. Srinivas Reddy directed the I&PR officials to take the schemes to the people as it was their responsibility to effectively communicate the government's welfare-centric schemes.

CM Revanth Reddy gets PM Modi's time, not Rahul Gandhi's appointment: BJP
The BJP Telangana unit has said that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi denying appointment to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is an 'insult' to the people of Telangana. 'The Chief Minister made 46 trips to Delhi in the last 19 months. Neither Mr. Gandhi nor other senior Congress leaders had bothered to meet him. But, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Central Ministers gave appointments to Mr. Revanth Reddy,' reminded State BJP president N. Ramchander Rao on Monday. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi at the Telangana Bhavan, the BJP chief said Congress leaders are 'fooling' the Telangana people with regard to the 42% quota bill for the Backward Classes (BCs) and deliberately enacting a 'drama' to avoid holding local body polls. Reiterating the party's stand against including 10% Muslims quota in the 42% reservation for the BCs, he questioned the government's seriousness about the reservations as it seemed to have overlooked the prevailing legal issues pending in the Supreme Court. 'Does the Congress government know the procedure to include the BCs quota in the Ninth Schedule? What is the opinion of their legal advisors? The government has to amend section 285 of the Panchayat Raj Act to include the BC quota,' he said. It is not fair on the part of the State government to blame the Centre without having a clear idea on how to go about implementing the BCs quota in the forthcoming local body elections, he maintained and said that even if the quota is inserted into the Ninth Schedule, it can still come under the judicial review as was made clear in the 1973 Kesavanand Bharati case by the SC.
