‘Adolescence' scores with 13 Emmy nominations: Here's what they all are

Netflix has done it again. Repeating the success of The Queen's Gambit, Beef and Baby Reindeer, this year's limited-series contender from the streamer, Adolescence, has swept in with a lucky 13 Emmy nominations.
As predicted by Gold Derby, Adolescence earned one of the five coveted limited series slots, a race in which it has been the frontrunner since its debut. It will compete for the title alongside HBO Max's The Penguin, Netflix's Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, FX's Dying for Sex and Netflix's Black Mirror. Should Adolescence triumph in September, it will be the first time a streaming service has won the category three years in a row, tying the record set in 1986-1988 by NBC (Peter the Great, A Year in the Life, and The Murder of Mary Phagan).

Series cocreator and star Stephen Graham earned his first Emmy nomination as a performer — one of three overall for his work on the series, along with writing and producing — for his role as the father of the troubled teen.
Already the favorite to win the trophy, Owen Cooper — another first-time nominee — made his acting debut as Jamie, the teenager accused of murdering his classmate. Should he win, the 15-year-old will break a 50-year-old record for the youngest male actor to win a Primetime Emmy Award, set by Scott Jacoby at 16 in 1973 for That Certain Summer. His co-star, Ashley Walters, is nominated as well; he stars as one of the detectives investigating Jamie's cast.
The cast was also recognized in every category (except lead actress, where they didn't submit) — the first Emmy nominations for all — including supporting actress Erin Doherty, who stunned in her episode (the series' third), as the psychologist who interrogates Jamie, and Christine Tremarco, as Jamie's mother.
Graham was also nominated for writing the limited series, alongside co-creator Jack Thorne; director Philip Barantini, credited for the series' stark but effective one-shot filming technique, was also nominated.
Television Academy voters embraced the series in nearly every category they could, also recognizing it with nods for cinematography, costumes, sound editing, and sound mixing, and not surprisingly casting, given the discovery of Cooper.
Adolescence recently earned four nominations from the Television Critics Association, including Program of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Miniseries & Specials, and Individual Achievement in Drama for both Graham and Cooper.

This heartbreaking drama is an underrated Netflix movie to watch this weekend (July 25-27)

Every time I open Netflix, I feel a mild sensation of both excitement and dread. There's plenty of stuff to check out, but I actually have to pick something in order to get started. This weekend, I've pulled together three movies that are all great whether you've seen them once or hundreds of times. They're also movies that, for one reason or another, are underrated at the moment. Give them a look. Recommended Videos We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on HBO Max, and the best movies on Disney+. Friday Night Lights (2004) One of the great football movies ever made, Friday Night Lights tells the story of a small Texas town where high school football is the only thing that matters. When the star tailback hurts himself and is out for the season, all hope of the team making it to the state championship seems lost. The team's coach must then push his kids and the town to remember how important it is to believe in themselves. As cheesy as that might sound, Billy Bob Thornton knows how to turn the material into something genuinely revelatory. There's a reason a whole show was based on the story at the center of this film. You can watch Friday Night Lights on Netflix. His Three Daughters (2024) A genuinely heartbreaking movie, His Three Daughters follows three sisters as they navigate the death of the father they all shared. Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne, and Elizabeth Olsen all delivered textured performances here, and part of the point of the movie is that their dad meant very different things to each of them. His Three Daughters is a movie about how easy it is to judge the people in your life and how hard it is to navigate difficult periods together without driving one another insane. Crucially, each actor receives plenty of breathing room. You can watch His Three Daughters on Netflix. Instant Family (2018) Family comedy has largely been relegated to Netflix, but Instant Family is a reminder of how great this genre can be. The film stars Rose Byrne and Mark Wahlberg as a couple who decide to foster children after agreeing to start a family. When they find themselves fostering three siblings, including a rebellious 15-year-old, they begin to realize how chaotic and complicated fostering children really is and how much they still have to learn. Byrne and Wahlberg are excellent and remarkably game. Instant Family is surprisingly sweet without losing any of its laughs. You can watch Instant Family on Netflix.

Although Prime Video is just one of the offerings that Amazon includes with any Prime subscription, it can be valuable if you know how to take advantage of it. Sometimes, though, opening the service and actually picking something to watch can feel incredibly challenging. That's why we've pulled together three underrated movies that will hopefully make your decision easier about what to watch. Whatever you're looking for, we've got you covered. Recommended Videos We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on HBO Max, and the best movies on Disney+. Letters From Iwo Jima (2006) Clint Eastwood directed two movies about the Battle of Iwo Jima in 2006, and most agree that Letters From Iwo Jima, which tells the story of the battle from the Japanese perspective, is the better one. It follows several Japanese soldiers who work to defend the island, and the commander tasked with fending off American forces for as long as possible, even as he understands the impossibility of his task. It's a thoughtful examination of soldiers who were often demonized in Western depictions of the war. You can watch Letters From Iwo Jima on Amazon Prime Video. First Man (2018) Damien Chazelle's follow-up to La La Land wasn't nearly as well-regarded or well-remembered as that film, but it's no less worthy of praise. First Man follows Neil Armstrong's journey to the moon. While it might seem like a conventional biopic, it turns out to be much stranger than that premise might suggest. First Man is the study of a man who risks everything in his world to pursue something insanely dangerous. The flight sequences here are genuinely stunning. Ryan Gosling is truly excellent as Armstrong. It's a subdued, understated central performance, which has to communicate a deep well of feeling with remarkable economy. You can watch First Man on Amazon Prime Video. Snack Shack (2024) I've always been a sucker for coming-of-age movies, and Snack Shack's unique charm stands out in a crowded field. Snack Shack depicts two friends who like to hatch moneymaking schemes together. The duo decides to reopen their pool's abandoned snack shack. As they start making money at the shack, they meet an effortlessly cool lifeguard who will upend their summer and their relationship. Snack Shack is a little shaggy, but it's remarkably charming and anchored by a trio of compelling young lead performers who all seem to perfectly understand what they've been asked to do. You can watch Snack Shack on Amazon Prime Video.
