BMW gives a glimpse of its next-generation superbike
The German company's Motorrad motorcycle division describes the BMW Motorrad Concept RR as the ultimate performance statement in technology and design for the future generation of BMW RR models.
The Concept RR is inspired by the M 1000 RR machine with which Toprak Razgatlioğlu won the 2024 FIM World Superbike Championship.
'The BMW Motorrad Concept RR is a true masterpiece of our development team, technically and in design language,' said Markus Flasch, head of BMW Motorrad.
The Concept RR is powered by the in-line four-cylinder engine of the world champion machine, which delivers more than 169kW.
The power is harnessed by electronic control systems that come directly from the BMW M 1000 RR, including the engine management, traction control and engine brake.
Using hi-tech materials such as carbon and aluminium, the Motorrad Concept RR sets new benchmarks in lightweight construction. From the frame to the smallest component, every detail is consistently optimised for lightweight construction and performance, said BMW.
It described the bike's design as 'sharp, purposeful and expressive' with an embossed RR logo on the tail and an illuminated RR symbol on the downside of the aluminium tail.
Special emphasis was placed on aerodynamics, particularly on the challenging objectives of riding stability at high speeds, maximum cornering speeds and minimal air resistance for optimal top speed.
These competing goals are realised by the Concept RR through an unprecedented compact package, reduced external attachments and enhanced precision of airflow. The concept bike is also equipped with an aerodynamically optimised fairing with integrated winglets and high-performance brakes.
BMW didn't reveal a launch date for its next-generation superbike but it's unlikely to be before 2027 as the S 1000 RR and M 1000 RR were updated this year.
The BMW S 1000 RR was launched in 2009 as a race-orientated sport bike. BMW initially built a limited number of units to satisfy World Superbike homologation requirements but later expanded production for commercial sale of the bike.
The higher-spec M 1000 RR — the first BMW motorcycle to carry the 'M' prefix normally reserved for the brand's high-performance cars — was launched in 2020 with extensive engine, aero and chassis upgrades.

BMW SA ‘not exposed' to current US tariff uncertainty
But group says bilateral trade agreements with the UK, Europe and US are essential to the future of vehicle production in SA. BMW South Africa boss Peter van Binsbergen says that the current uncertainty around US tariffs being imposed on vehicle imports from South Africa and the renewal of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa) will not impact the group in the short term. 'Currently – this year and in next year's plan – there are no exports to the US in our production plan, which is fully maxed out on demand,' he said on Thursday. 'The US is a customer market for the [BMW] Rosslyn factory. In the last three years of the previous X3 we exported a lot to the US, and we had about 10 to 15% of our volume going to the US,' he explained, but said the group is not currently exporting to this market. 'Right now, we are actually not at all exposed to the current tariff uncertainty,' Van Binsbergen said. But he noted that the US has always been an important customer of BMW SA. 'Long term, South Africa, our industry, and [we] definitely want the US as a customer,' he stressed. ALSO READ: How will the 25% US import tariff affect SA's auto industry? 'Agoa must remain' 'A big market like the US needs to be a customer of the South African auto industry. We always want to count on the US as a market, which is why we believe Agoa benefits must remain,' he said. Van Binsbergen added that to secure the future of vehicle production in SA, it is absolutely essential for the automotive industry that there are bilateral trade agreements between SA and the United Kingdom, Europe and the US. He also stressed that the government' automotive industry programmes, such as the Motor Industry Development Programme (MIDP), Automotive Production and Development Programme (APDP) and APDP 2, and the policy stability these programmes provided, are why vehicle original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are in SA and have the size of production facilities they have in the country. Van Binsbergen said a stable automotive policy environment and bilateral trade agreements between SA and the industry's markets meant OEMs could invest with confidence for the long term. He noted that 74% of the automotive industry's exports go to Europe because of the bilateral trade agreement between South Africa and Europe, adding the agreement needs to be updated to take into account the new energy vehicles (NEVs) exported from SA into Europe, which wants to go fully electric. He said President Cyril Ramaphosa made a very clear statement at SA Auto Week last year that the focus would be on all NEVs and that there would be a customer-based incentive. This is a reference to Ramaphosa's announcement in October 2024 that consideration must be given to incentives for manufacturers as well as tax rebates or subsidies for consumers to accelerate the uptake of electric vehicles (EVs). However, the president did not provide a timetable for implementing these incentives or indicate how they would be funded. Van Binsbergen said these incentives 'still haven't come' and the market for NEVs is only moving organically, with only customers who really want an EV buying them. 'Those who say they are still too expensive are not buying. There's no question we definitely need help with the EV market with some incentives. Then of course the after sales industry grows, the charging infrastructure grows and you start creating a whole ecosystem, which means more jobs, so we need it,' he said. He added that to get the entire NEV value chain running properly in South Africa 'is a lot about the chicken and the egg'. 'Anywhere in the world, you see the minute the government incentives kick in, customers start buying the vehicles because it becomes more affordable and it becomes comparable to an ICE [internal combustion engine vehicle],' he said. Mikel Mabasa, CEO of automotive business council Naamsa, said earlier this year that South African-based vehicle manufacturers are planning to accelerate the multi-million-rand project to install more than 100 additional NEV charging stations on major routes countrywide in 2025. Naamsa confirmed in August 2023 the adjudication process for the tender worth 'hundreds of millions of rand' for the installation of the additional charging stations had been finalised and a recommendation on the preferred bidder had been made 'to our principals' but the project stalled after that. Van Binsbergen said this project 'is still on the agenda' but the right partner needs to be found. 'I'm still pushing the buttons because charging infrastructure should be brand agnostic. Each brand should not be building their own charging infrastructure. It should be available to all customers from all brands, and it should fit the market's requirements and not one brand's requirements otherwise you end up with too many charging stations in one place and none in the other. 'So, you have to do it together and no question Naamsa is the right place to do that,' he said. Van Binsbergen confirmed there is a problem with the payment system because it is not simple, and it should be just a credit card. He said everyone currently needs their own charging card depending on which brand they are with, which needs to be resolved and was the task for Naamsa. BMW M2 CS sets new Nürburgring lap record
The new BMW M2 CS has set a new lap record for compact cars around the 20.8km Nürburgring Nordschleife track. With a lap time of seven minutes 25.5 seconds, the BMW blitzed the iconic German track more than seven seconds faster than the previous record holder, the Audi RS3, which achieved 7:33.123 a year ago. The new record was set by BMW M development engineer Jörg Weidinger on April 11, six weeks before the latest M2 CS had its official unveiling at the Villa d'Este concours at Lake Como in Italy. Impressively, the new record is a full 13 seconds faster than the 7:38.7 set by Weidinger in the previous M2 in April 2023. The big improvement is attributed to the M2 CS gaining power and shedding weight. The BMW M2 CS is 30kg lighter thanks to the use of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic in parts of the body, and forged M light-alloy wheels. The high-revving 3.0 l six-cylinder inline M TwinPower Turbo engine was also boosted to produce 390kW of power and 650Nm, respective improvements of 37kW and 50Nm over the old unit. The M2 CS sends its muscle power to the rear wheels via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and M Sport differential for a claimed 0-100km/h sprint in 3.8 seconds, 0.2 seconds faster than a standard M2. The top speed of the M2 CS, which comes with the M Driver's Package as standard, is electronically limited to 302km/h. A chassis tweak sees the special model getting a ride height lowered by 8mm and special suspension tuning to improve handling. The mapping of the Dynamic Stability Control and M Dynamic Mode are optimised for racetrack use. The vehicle comes standard with track tyres (275/35 ZR19 at the front and 285/30 ZR20 at the rear) but owners can specify more aggressive ultra-track tyres or standard sport tyres. To be produced in limited numbers, the new BMW M2 CS will be available in SA from the second quarter of 2026, with pricing not yet confirmed. The fastest BMW production car around the Nürburgring remains the M4 CSL with a lap time of 7:18.137.

BMW X3 M50 balances power, comfort and efficiency
The interior is smart and polished in feel and build quality, while the electric seats are comfy and generously padded. Standard amenities are generous but you'll need to raid the options catalogue for more. From behind the multifunction helm you get the sense that you're driving a premium car and you are driving an X3 that's larger than any model before. The new iteration stretches 4,755mm in length, 1,920mm width and 1,660mm height, making it 34mm longer, 29mm wider and 16mm taller that the previous X3. You notice the growth spurt everywhere, especially between the lanes, where it can drive autonomously. Occupants enjoy more leg, head and shoulder room, and more luggage can be swallowed by the expanded boot with a power tailgate. At times it felt like commanding an X5 but it's nicely measured and feels poised, refined and powerful, thanks to the 280kW and 580Nm 3.0 l twin-turbo straight-six petrol engine that's paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive system. It has a mild-hybrid 48V system injecting 13kW to the mix and silently powering the car at crawl speeds. It kicks out a combined 293kW and can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 4.6 secs to run out of steam at 250km/h. It's a tarmac bruiser when you need it to be that also corners keenly.
