MK Stalin To Launch Fifty Water Vending Machines In Chennai
In a major public welfare initiative to ensure access to clean drinking water for all, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin will inaugurate 50 vending machines across Chennai on Wednesday.
The official inauguration will take place near the Marina swimming pool. The initiative, led by the Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB), is designed to provide 24/7 access to free drinking water, especially benefiting people from low-income backgrounds.
These state-of-the-art water vending machines, also known as water ATMs, have been installed in strategic public locations throughout the city.
According to Metro Water officials, the machines are being installed in two to six key spots within each Corporation zone. Locations include public places such as beaches, parks, temples, bus depots, terminals, and marketplaces -- all identified by the Greater Chennai Corporation for their high footfall and utility.
Each vending machine is linked to a Metro Water pipeline and a storage tank to ensure an uninterrupted water supply. The machines are equipped with a purification system and are monitored around the clock through CCTV surveillance.
Users can choose between two quantities of drinking water -- 150 ml or 1 litre -- depending on their requirement.
"This is a commendable step by the state government, particularly for people who cannot afford bottled water," said M. Sajesh, a resident of Triplicane. "However, consistent monitoring and timely maintenance will be crucial to ensure the success and sustainability of this project."
He also recalled a similar initiative launched in 2016 -- 'Amma Kudineer' -- under the leadership of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, which was eventually discontinued due to a lack of proper follow-up and maintenance.
Officials from CMWSSB have assured that this new scheme will be actively monitored, with regular inspections and service checks planned to prevent neglect or breakdown.
With the launch of these water vending machines, the government hopes to provide safe, accessible, and free drinking water to the city's residents -- a move that reinforces its commitment to inclusive urban development and public health.

The campaign, which will run till Nov, aims to bring over 40 essential services closer to residents through door-to-door drives and local grievance redressal camps. Camps will be held from Tuesday to Friday every week, with each district hosting six camps. A focused action phase is planned from July 15 through Aug. "This is based on the chief minister's vision that people should not travel far to access services. The govt should reach them," said Amudha. Over one lakh trained volunteers have been deployed across the state—6,832 in rural areas and the rest in urban locations—to visit homes, inform residents about the camps, and help them gather necessary documents. In the first phase, 109 camps will be held from July 15 to August 14, with six camps organised daily across different zones. Each camp will run from 9 am to 3 pm. Volunteers will go door to door seven days in advance to distribute application forms and awareness kits about the 43 services available from 13 departments. Applications submitted will be processed within 45 days. The initiative builds on the Muthalvarin Mugavari scheme, under which 1.05 crore petitions were received since 2021, with 1.01 crore resolved.

CM Stalin to launch ‘Ungaludan Stalin' aimed at delivering govt services at doorstep
Chennai, July 14 (UNI) Aimed at directly addressing public grievances and delivering government services at the doorsteps of the people through 10,000 special camps across Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister M K Stalin, is launching the massive state-wide programme, christened 'Ungaludan Stalin (Stalin with you), from the temple town Chidambaram in Cuddalore district on Tuesday (July 15). He is reaching Chidambaram by train on Tuesday morning and this is the second time that he travels by train on an official engagement. The camps will be held in both rural and urban areas from July 15 to November. This initiative aims to bring government services and welfare schemes directly to the people. While 3,768 camps will be conducted in urban centres, 6,232 will be held in the rural hinterland. A total of 43 services from 13 Departments will be provided in the urban areas, it will be 46 services from 15 departments in the rural areas. All applications received will be processed and action taken within 45 days. Nearly one lakh trained volunteers have started visiting each household to create awareness about the massive initiative, which brings the administration closer to the people and inform about the nearest location of the camp in the respective areas. The volunteers' role included explaining the various government services on offer and the criteria to avail them and the documents required to be submitted. Booklets containing the information have also been distributed for a wider reach. Eligible women left out of the 'Kalaignar Urimai Thogai', the Rs 1,000 for women homemakers, have been asked to submit their applications. The applications are available at these camps. Explaining the programme, Special Officer for Various Public Grievances Redressal Schemes P Amudha, Additional Chief Secretary told the media in Chennai that each camp will be held for four days a week and cover 10,000 people. A help and facilitation centre with 100 personnel with the contact number 1100 has been set up to help the people. The opposition AIADMK has criticised the programme as a ploy by the ruling DMK to secure the phone numbers of the electorate ahead of the 2026 assembly election. 'It is an election drama aimed at voter outreach. The real objective is to collect voter information in the guise of receiving petitions,' alleged AIADMK general secretary and former Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, adding, 'Government officials are distributing forms for this scheme to every household. Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 181 Indian fishermen so far this year
Colombo/New Delhi, July 14 (UNI) Sri Lanka Navy has seized 24 Indian fishing boats and arrested 181 fishermen for allegedly fishing in Sri Lankan waters so far this year, the navy said in a statement today. This includes the seizure of an Indian fishing boat and seven Indian fishermen during an operation yesterday, the navy said in a statement. They were arrested off the Delft Island, Jaffna, in Sri Lanka's Northern province. The navy said the seized boat and the fishermen were handed over to the fisheries officials for further legal proceedings. The report comes as seven additional fishermen from Rameshwaram were detained by Colombo. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has urged New Delhi to act upon this immediately, as the central government is in talks with authorities in Sri Lanka to immediately release the fishermen The Sri Lankan navy reiterated that it continues to conduct regular patrols and operations in Sri Lankan waters to prevent illegal fishing by foreign vessels, citing concerns over its impact on the livelihoods of local fishermen. In just the past two weeks, over 15 Indian fishermen have been arrested on the same charges, and have been put into extended judicial custody post initial hearings. The Rameshwaram Fishermen Association has called the accusations by the Sri Lankan Navy false, stating that it is harassing local fishermen from Tamil Nadu and affecting their livelihoods.
