JAMMU: PDP president
Mehbooba Mufti
on Saturday favoured revival of sporting ties between India and Pakistan to normalise the tense situation in the aftermath of the recent events including the
Pahalgam terror attack
and the
Operation Sindoor
.
She said the war clouds hanging over the region are not in favour of the country which is grappling with unemployment and poverty.
"There should be sporting events (between India and Pakistan) if you want to live in peace and not spend money on the war. If we want to overcome unemployment and poverty, then you have to normalise the situation and sports is the best bet in achieving this goal," the former chief minister told reporters here.
Terrorists struck the Pahalgam hill resort on April 22, killing 25 tourists and a local. In retaliation, the Indian Armed Forces struck terror infrastructure across the border on May 7 under Operation Sindoor, leading to a four-day military clash between the two countries.
She said the Indo-Pakistan war is over but the atmosphere is still prevalent in the country. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed credit for avoiding a nuclear war.
Unfortunately, the BJP has created such an atmosphere in the country that all parties are asking why the government went for a ceasefire with Pakistan, she said.
"That is, the war should have continued. Look at the mentality. What is happening in our country? Why did you do this? And this is the policy of the BJP, of that aggression. It has brought aggression among the people," she said.
"Now all the parties in the opposition are compelled because if they do not say something like this they will be dubbed anti-national.
If anyone doesn't say bomb Pakistan, he will be treated as anti-national, if no one supports cruel policies in Jammu and Kashmir, they are anti-national," Mufti said.
Claiming that the whole atmosphere in the country is ruined, she said the small country like Pakistan is today compared to India and it is because the "BJP has left the policy of former prime minister A B Vajpyee and adopted the policy of (Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathu Ram) Godse," Mufti said.
She said India could have played a leadership role in south Asia but the situation is that the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is being hijacked by China because "we do not talk to the neighbours."
"We are sending our delegates all over the world. We wanted the Pahalgam incident to be internationalised but no one talked about that and instead, Kashmir and the ceasefire were talked about along with Pakistan.
What did Pakistan do in the war?" the PDP leader said.
She said a new norm was set that whenever there is a
terror attack
, it will trigger a war.
Mufti said any country can exploit the situation by giving "supari" (contract) to non-state actors so that there is a fight between India and Pakistan and they can sell their weapons. America wants us to buy F35 fighter jets, Russia and Germany something else while China is arming Pakistan free of cost, she added.
"How can we overcome poverty and unemployment when we will remain engaged with Pakistan in war?" she said.
The PDP chief said adding reconciliation and dialogue in any part of the world is the way forward but before dialogue with Pakistan, the government should hold talks with the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
On the US imposing 25 per cent tariff on India, she alleged that the BJP-led government has failed in both domestic and foreign policy.
"Diplomatically, we have failed... Time and again, the US president talks about India. He is threatening. Why is he threatening? Because our country completely surrendered in front of America and now its president is trampling us," Mufti said.
On Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's allegation against the Election Commission (EC) of vote theft in favour of the BJP, the PDP leader said he is saying it with proof as to how over one crore voters were added in Maharashtra between the parliamentary and assembly elections.
"The beauty of India is its democracy and if you start compromising elections, then what is left behind," she said, alleging that the BJP's J&K policy has failed and the people of the country are fed up with its J&K "rhetoric and war cries".
She refused to comment on the remarks of Sadhvi Pragya against the Congress and accused her of worshipping Godse.

Government meetings spark buzz of J&K statehood

High-level meetings on the eve of the sixth anniversary of the reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir that led to the bifurcation of the erstwhile state into two Union territories set off speculation on Monday that the Centre may start the process of restoring the region's statehood. Adding fuel to this was a meeting of NDA members of Parliament called for Tuesday morning and the separate Sunday meetings between President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah. (PTI) Adding fuel to this was a meeting of NDA members of Parliament called for Tuesday morning and the separate Sunday meetings between President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah. Government officials and ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) functionaries remained tight-lipped about the bunch of meetings, including the one Union home minister Amit Shah held with national security advisor Ajit Doval, Intelligence Bureau chief Tapan Kumar Deka, and home secretary Govind Mohan on Monday. No details of this meeting, which was held in Parliament precincts, were shared. The speculation even prompted J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah to take to X and post: 'I've heard every possible permutation & combination about what to expect in J&K tomorrow so let me stick my neck out and say nothing will happen tomorrow - fortunately nothing bad will happen but unfortunately nothing positive will happen either. ' J&K was bifurcated into two UTs of J&K and Ladakh after Parliament on August 5, 2019 passed the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill and read down Article 370 and 35 (A) that gave the erstwhile state special powers to determine issues of domicile. Since the formation of the National Conference-led government in J&K almost 10 months ago, there has been a clamour to restore statehood in J&K. To be sure, both the Prime Minister and the home minister have stated that the region's statehood would be restored at the appropriate time. A senior BJP leader, while refusing to comment on the speculation said: 'This is a promise that the government has already made…and it will be done when the time is right.' This person, who asked not to be named, attributed the speculation of 'a big ticket announcement' to the two major events that took place on August 5. The first was the Bill for Abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 and a year later, on the foundation ceremony of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. Modi and Shah separately calling on President Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan prompted rumours that the Centre may have a crucial bill on its agenda for the ongoing monsoon session that will end on August 21. To be sure, officials and party functionaries said the two leaders calling on the President was not unusual. 'The PM briefs the President on his foreign visits, the HM too meets her as required…' a second BJP functionary said. The meetings come in the backdrop of the impending vice presidential election that has been necessitated by the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar who announced his exit on July 21, citing ill health. The election to pick the new VP has been scheduled for September 9, with August 21 being the last date for filing nominations. The second party functionary said the process of shortlisting candidates and reaching out to the allies including the Telugu Desam Party and the Janata Dal (United) to elicit their support will be initiated by the BJP leadership. 'So far, all the names being mentioned in the media are speculative,' the second functionary said. Some party leaders however indicated that the candidate is unlikely to be a sitting Lok Sabha MP or someone who holds a gubernatorial position. A meeting of the NDA parliamentary party has also been scheduled for Tuesday, which is likely to be addressed by the PM. Although such meetings used to be routinely held during Parliament sessions, their frequency has dropped after 2024. The last such meeting of NDA lawmakers was held on July 2, 2024. All eyes are also on the announcement for the election of the BJP's new party president. The term of the incumbent JP Nadda was extended till June 2024, but the election process has been the party president is elected unopposed. While the constitutional requirements for the election have been met, elections to pick new state presidents in at least 50% of the states are over, but there has been no word on the reason for the delay in announcing the date for the election of the new party president. A few party leaders said the process may get underway after the election of the VP is over, while some others indicated that the incumbent may continue till state polls are held in Bihar later this year. But right now, everyone is holding their breath for August 5.

BJP raises spectre of ‘political Islam' infiltrating Church in Kerala

The BJP has raised the spectre of 'political Islam' infiltrating the Church in Kerala. The party's State vice-president Shone George told a news conference on Monday (August 4, 2025) that radical Islamists, beholden to the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and Jamaat-e-Islami, had infiltrated Church protests in sizeable numbers, including those led by bishops, across the State. He noted the presence of Islamist elements in demonstrations led by Church leaders and the laity in several locations, including Kannur, Thalassery, Kozhikode, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Mananthavady, Angamaly and Ernakulam. 'I talked to the senior-most prelate in Kerala on Monday. He seemed not to be concerned about the presence of radical Islamists among the demonstrators,' he added. Asked to adduce evidence to back his charges, Mr. George asked mediapersons to contact the State police intelligence or mine their sources in the localities. Mr. George alleged that the SDPI's gambit was to use the arrest of the nuns as a foil for alienating Christians from the BJP. The SDPI and Jamaat-e-Islami's tactics had the tacit backing of the Congress and Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)]. He accused the ruling front and the Opposition of seeking to frustrate the efforts of the BJP governments at the Centre and Chhattisgarh to secure an early release for the nuns. 'Both the Congress and the CPI(M) wanted the nuns to remain in jail to ensure that the emotive issue festers and retards the BJP's bourgeoning acceptance among Christians in Kerala,' he added. Mr. George said the Vatican Council in 1964 had ruled against forced conversion. 'In contrast, if Tipu Sultan's expeditionary forays had not halted at Kodungalloor 200 years ago, Kerala's social matrix would have been different,' he added. Mr. George attacked the Congress and CPI(M) for seeking the support of the Jamaat-e-Islami and the People's Democratic Party (PDP) respectively during the recent byelection in the Nilambur Assembly constituency. He said the BJP was with 'patriotic Muslims,' who, he stated, were in the majority. BJP leader S. Suresh, who is also a State vice-president, said the party would not allow political adversaries to single out State president Rajiv Chandrasekhar for criticism.

Delhi Confidential: Caught in crossfire

Senior BJP leader and Lok Sabha MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy got a taste of the bitterness between TMC leaders Kalyan Banerjee and Mahua Moitra on Monday. Rudy, who is contesting against his party colleague Sanjeev Balyan for the post of secretary (administration), Constitution Club of India, was at the Makar Dwar of the Parliament House when he saw Banerjee leaving the premises. Rudy approached Banerjee, a four-time MP from Serampore, seeking his vote but the latter shouted at him that he would not support anyone who is backed by Moitra. 'You are supported by Mahua Moitra. I will not vote for you,' Banerjee told Rudy. As the stunned BJP leader looked at him, Banerjee announced that he 'would warn everyone who is friendly' with Moitra to stay away from him. Old Practice Revived Rajya Sabha getting adjourned for the day after being informed about the death of former Jharkhand CM and sitting MP Shibu Soren marked a return to a practice which was discontinued a few years ago. The proceedings of the Upper House were adjourned only for a few hours after the death of former Union Ministers Arun Jaitley (2019), Ram Vilas Paswan (2020) and Congress leader Rajeev Satav (2021). On Monday, Opposition leaders led by Congress's Jairam Ramesh suggested that the House should go back to the old practice of adjournment as a mark of respect to the deceased member. Mission Sindoor The invitation cards for Independence Day programme this year carry a logo of Operation Sindoor, an effort by the government to publicise India's military operation against terror targets in Pakistan in May this year. It is learnt that Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi in an address to senior Army officers post-Operation Sindoor had mentioned the decision to imprint the logo on all cards and official correspondence of the defence services. Senior Army officers are also likely to deliver lectures in schools on Operation Sindoor to create awareness among students on the operation.
