Tripura CM Manik Saha bats for better implementation of new criminal laws, hopes it will push up conviction rate
'We have seen that these are friendly Acts. To implement criminal laws, the stakeholders are required to work in coordination and benefit the common people. I urge you all to cooperate with each other,' CM Saha said while addressing a workshop on 'New Criminal Laws and NDPS Act' held for legal practitioners, the police, and administrative officers at Pragya Bhavan in Agartala.
'I think this workshop is a step in this direction. Awareness is very important. People don't know about that. But every person should know these laws, and for this, I think, awareness campaigns should be done vigorously,' he added.
'These laws reflect a victim-friendly, technology-driven, and time-bound approach to justice delivery… The FIR (First Information Report) can be filed from anywhere, any part of the country, or across the state without being physically present in the police station and irrespective of the jurisdiction. The victims are entitled to have a free copy of their FIRs. Victims are to be informed about the status of their cases every 90 days…' said CM Saha.

A disturbing incident occurred in Mumbai on Thursday (July 17, 2025) at around 10 p.m., when Mohammad Sohail Khan deliberately unleashed his pet dog on a minor boy, who was playing in a parked auto-rickshaw, according to Mumbai Police. 'Nearly 9.1 million animal bites and 5,726 human rabies deaths due to dog bites are estimated to occur every year in India,' states a study done by ICMR-NIE. 'Eighty per cent of the dog bite victims reported taking at least one dose of the vaccination. In order to eliminate dog-mediated rabies by 2023, India must continue to fast-track its action through a focussed health approach,' states a study done by ICMR-NIE. The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairy, based on a release issued by the Ministry, mentioned that States/UTs have reported, as per the data reported on the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (Integrated Health Information Platform) portal under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, that 21,95,122 dog bite cases in India during Jan-Dec 2024.

Thane: 5 history-sheeters held for brutal assault on Bhandup hotelier linked to MP; builder named prime accused
THANE: Five history-sheeters, some with serious criminal records, were arrested by Shri Nagar police in connection with the brutal assault on a 41-year-old hotelier from Bhandup, who is a relative of MP. The incident unfolded inside an office at Wagle Estate, Thane, on Wednesday. A city-based developer, Bhushan Bhanushali, was named as the prime accused, said a police officer. According to police, the arrest was made in the case where the hotelier, along with some builders and the office owner, was engaged in a business discussion around 3:15 p.m. when a mob of 20–21 men barged in. 'They began punching and kicking the hotelier and others, and ransacked the place using cups, paperweights, flower pots, and other objects,' a police official stated. The victim suffered multiple injuries, including a severe blow to his private parts. An FIR was registered late on July 16 under several stringent provisions of the newly enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Among the accused is prominent Thane-based builder Bhushan Bhanushali, who was named the prime accused in the case. Airline employee accused of rape tries to flee to Hong Kong, nabbed at airport
MUMBAI: A London-based airline's employee accused of raping a 23-year-old air hostess was arrested at the Mumbai airport on Sunday, just before he fled to Hong Kong. He allegedly forced her to drink alcohol in excess before taking her to his house in Mira Road, said a police officer. Once the FIR was registered, he decided to leave India permanently. On June 29, she was on a long-haul trip to London when she met the 25-year-old accused on the plane. According to the complaint, after they returned to Mumbai, he took her to a party in Mira Road where he allegedly forced her to drink liquor in excess till she was too inebriated. He then booked a cab at around 3.45am and took her to his house. Taking advantage of the compromised state she was in, he allegedly raped her. The victim said she was too intoxicated to resist his advances. According to the police, she suffered mental shock after the rape and was allegedly threatened by the accused. 'The accused warned her of serious consequences if she filed a complaint with the police,' said a police officer. She continued working and went abroad on another long-haul trip. After returning to Mumbai this time, she approached the Navghar police, who on Saturday booked the accused under Sections 64 (rape) and Sections 351(1) (criminal intimidation) and 352 (intentional insult with the intent to provoke breach of peace) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. As soon as the FIR was registered, the accused prepared to flee. He secured a job with a Hong Kong-based airline company and even obtained his visa, the officer said. The Navghar police then contacted the vigilance department of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and the Sahar police to apprehend the accused from the airport. 'Police sub-inspector Sanjay Lokhandemali is conducting the investigation,' said senior police inspector Dheeraj Koli.
