Copper strategy: India eyes sixfold rise in demand by 2047; Centre unveils plan to expand refining capacity

on Friday unveiled the government's Copper Vision Document, a blueprint aimed at preparing India's copper ecosystem to meet the expected surge in domestic demand over the next two decades.
The roadmap projects that India's copper demand will rise sixfold by 2047 and sets a target of adding 5 million tonnes per annum of smelting and refining capacity by 2030. It also outlines a multipronged approach including ramping up secondary refining, improving domestic recycling systems, and securing access to overseas mineral resources through global partnerships, according to PTI.
'Copper plays a critical role in our energy transition, infrastructure expansion and adoption of green technologies like electric vehicles and solar energy,' said Reddy, who holds the coal and mines portfolio.
He added that the document offers a strategic pathway to meet India's growing consumption needs while ensuring raw material security.
The launch took place at the International Conference on Sustainable and Responsible Mining through Best Mine Closure Practices hosted by the Indian National Committee of the World Mining Congress in Hyderabad.
The mines ministry said the document is aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's goal of achieving a Viksit Bharat by 2047 and marks a significant step toward building a sustainable, resilient and future-ready domestic copper industry.

Punjab govt to introduce anti-sacrilege law in special Assembly session
The Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government has announced plans to table a new law against sacrilege during a special session of the state legislative assembly scheduled for July 10 and 11, news agency ANI reported. The decision is being described by the state as 'historic for Punjab' and is aimed at addressing the longstanding demand for stricter laws against sacrilegious acts. Officials confirmed that the proposed legislation will ensure strict punishment for individuals found guilty of hurting religious sentiments, ANI reported. Mann launches 'fast track Punjab portal' Speaking at an event in Mohali, Kejriwal called the initiative 'unprecedented' and said it sets Punjab apart from other states in terms of governance and economic policy. 'When Bhagwant Mann and I visited Punjab, we met traders and received their proposals. After listening and understanding their concerns, we made this decision,' Kejriwal said. 'We want traders who left Punjab to return and work here. Our intent is clear, and that's why we are making this announcement. Our government's policy is entirely different from the current politics of the country.' He emphasised the need for a business-friendly environment where industrialists can concentrate on growth rather than bureaucratic hurdles. 'No government in any state has made such announcements until today,' Kejriwal added. According to Kejriwal, businesses can now apply for approvals through the Invest Punjab Portal, with guaranteed processing timelines: 45 days for most projects and just three days for those up to ₹125 crore. 'No running around, no delays, no corruption. Punjab is ready for your industry's new journey,' he said. Punjab reports 44% growth in June GST collections Punjab witnessed a significant rise in its net Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections in June 2025, registering a 44.44 per cent year-on-year increase, news agency PTI reported. Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said that the state collected ₹2,379.90 crore in June, up from ₹1,647.69 crore in the same month last year. 'Punjab has surpassed the national average in GST growth and emerged as one of the top-performing states, despite ongoing national and geopolitical challenges, including border-related tensions,' Cheema said. He added that the state also recorded a 15.35 per cent increase in April and a 24.59 per cent rise in May. For the first quarter of FY26, Punjab's net GST revenue reached ₹6,830.40 crore, up from ₹5,377.75 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Punjab approves ₹68 crore loan waiver for Dalit families Last month, the Punjab Cabinet approved a ₹68 crore loan waiver for over 4,000 Dalit families. The beneficiaries had taken loans from the Punjab Scheduled Castes Land Development and Finance Corporation. The approval was granted during a cabinet meeting chaired by Mann in Chandigarh. The waiver will cover loans taken up to March 31, 2020. Addressing the media after the meeting, Mann said the move would benefit 4,727 families who had borrowed for various livelihood activities, including shop setups and dairy farming. 'This promise was made by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema during his budget speech in March. With this cabinet nod, we have delivered on that commitment,' Mann said. (With agency inputs)

Rahul Gandhi referenced a media report and wrote on X, 'Piyush Goyal can beat his chest all he wants, mark my words, Modi will meekly bow to the Trump tariff deadline.' Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday emphasised that India will only enter into trade agreements, including the proposed US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), when they serve the country's national interests and offer mutual benefits. Speaking on the sidelines of the 16th Toy Biz B2B expo in New Delhi, Goyal made it clear that India's approach to international trade negotiations remains firm and principled. 'It should be a win-win agreement, and only when India's interests are safeguarded -- national interest will always be supreme -- and keeping that in mind, if a good deal is formed, India is always ready to engage with developed countries,' the minister stated. Goyal emphasised that India negotiates on its own minister revealed that India is currently engaged in trade discussions with multiple countries across different continents. 'Discussions are ongoing with various countries -- be it the European Union, New Zealand, Oman, the US, Chile, or Peru. Talks about agreements are underway with many nations,' he said. However, Goyal stressed that the multiplicity of negotiations does not mean India is in a rush to conclude deals. 'A Free Trade Agreement is only possible when there is mutual benefit,' he explained. 'India never enters into trade deals based on deadlines or time pressure. A deal is accepted only when it is fully matured, well-negotiated, and in the national interest,' Goyal stated. This approach reflects India's confidence in its negotiating position and its commitment to securing favourable terms for its economy and businesses. At the toy expo, Goyal expressed optimism about the growth potential of India's toy manufacturing sector, highlighting both domestic and international opportunities. 'I am sure with the high quality goods I am seeing here, they will all be finding good market with the whole gulf region all the 6 countries of the Middle East as they are today finding in nearly 153 countries in the world,' the minister said, praising the quality of Indian toy products. Goyal announced that the government is preparing additional support measures for the sector. 'We will soon be coming out also with the support program and incentive scheme to support the toy industry,' he revealed. The minister highlighted the enormous domestic market potential for toys in India, noting the country's demographic advantage. 'Considering that we have a market of 1.4 billion Indians who would like to use toys. At every age, there is a demand of toys,' Goyal observed. He characterized the toy industry as 'a growing sector which have eyes on the world,' indicating the government's confidence in the sector's export potential alongside domestic consumption. (ANI)

The MNS chief and prominent investor, Sushil Kedia, has withdrawn his previous remarks about the Marathi language, explaining that his tweet was made in a state of stress. In a post on X, Kedia wrote, 'I request Raj Thackeray Ji to consider my humble submission.' 'My tweet happened in the wrong state of mind under stress, and further, it is getting manipulated and misinterpreted to suit the interests of people who want to be in any controversy. Having come under pressure from the violence inflicted on those who do not know Marathi, I ended up overreacting. I realise I must take back my reactions and withdraw. Truth is, even after living over 30 years in Mumbai, the level of efficiency that a native Marathi born can have, we'll not be able to achieve.' Meanwhile, Police noted that unidentified persons vandalised the office of investor Sushil Kedia in the Worli area of Mumbai. Some individuals reached Kedia's office in the morning and threw stones, a police official said, as reported by PTI. 'The attackers were raising slogans in support of Marathi and praising Raj Thackeray,' he said. Earlier, the founder of a Mumbai-based investment service had approached police for protection after getting threats for challenging Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on the Marathi language issue. Prominent investor Sushil Kedia said that he will not learn Marathi as a protest against the 'gross misconduct' of the MNS chief. 'I don't know Marathi properly even after living for 30 years in Mumbai & with your gross misconduct I have made it a resolve that until such people as you are allowed to pretend to be taking care of Marathi Manus I take pratigya I won't learn Marathi. Kya karna hai bol?' Kedia posted on X. MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande responded, advising Kedia to focus on his business. 'Do business if you're a businessman; don't try to act like our father. If you insult Marathi in Maharashtra, you'll get a slap on the ear, otherwise, stay in your lane, Mehta or whoever. That's all for now.' Deshpande posted on X. (This is a developing story)
